Abstract

We observe magnetic Feshbach resonances in a collision between the ground and metastable states of two-electron atoms of ytterbium (Yb). We measure the on-site interaction of doubly occupied sites of an atomic Mott-insulator state in a three-dimensional optical lattice as a collisional frequency shift in a high-resolution laser spectroscopy. The observed spectra are well fitted by a simple theoretical formula, in which two particles with an s-wave contact interaction are confined in a harmonic trap. This analysis reveals a wide variation of the interaction with a resonance behavior around a magnetic field of about 1.1 G for the energetically lowest magnetic sublevel of 170Yb, as well as around 360 mG for the energetically highest magnetic sublevel of 174Yb. The observed Feshbach resonance can only be induced by an anisotropic interatomic interaction. This scheme will open the door to a variety of studies using two-electron atoms with tunable interaction.

Spectroscopic determination of magnetic-field-dependent interactions in an ultracold Yb( 3P2 )-Li mixture

F. Schäfer, Hideki Konishi, Adrien Bouscal +2 more

We present experimental results on the inelastic and elastic interspecies interactions between ytterbium (Yb) in the metastable ${}^{3}P{}_{2}$ state loaded into a deep optical lattice and spin polarized lithium (Li) in its ground state. Focusing on the ${m}_{J}=0$ magnetic sublevel of $\mathrm{Yb}({}^{3}P{}_{2}$), bias magnetic fields between 20 and $800\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{G}$ are investigated and significantly enhanced inelastic collision rates with high magnetic fields are found. In addition, by direct spectroscopy of the Yb Mott insulator immersed in the Li Fermi gas an upper boundary of the background scattering length of the $\mathrm{Yb}({}^{3}P{}_{2},{m}_{J}=0)\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{Li}{(}^{2}{S}_{1/2},F=1/2,{m}_{F}=+1/2$) system is estimated, revealing the absence of useful Feshbach resonances. These observations are qualitatively consistent with the theoretical calculations.

Observation of an Orbital Interaction-Induced Feshbach Resonance in Yb 173

M. Höfer, Luis Riegger, Francesco Scazza +6 more

We report on the experimental observation of a novel interorbital Feshbach resonance in ultracold (173)Yb atoms. This opens up the possibility of tuning the interactions between the (1)S(0) and (3)P(0) metastable state, both possessing zero total electronic angular momentum. The resonance is observed at experimentally accessible magnetic field strengths and occurs universally for all hyperfine state combinations. We characterize the resonance in the bulk via interorbital cross thermalization as well as in a three-dimensional lattice using high-resolution clock-line spectroscopy. Our measurements are well described by a generalized two-channel model of the orbital-exchange interactions.

Preparation and Spectroscopy of a Metastable Mott-Insulator State with Attractive Interactions

Manfred J. Mark, Elmar Haller, Katharina Lauber +5 more

We prepare and study a metastable attractive Mott-insulator state formed with bosonic atoms in a three-dimensional optical lattice. Starting from a Mott insulator with Cs atoms at weak repulsive interactions, we use a magnetic Feshbach resonance to tune the interactions to large attractive values and produce a metastable state pinned by attractive interactions with a lifetime on the order of 10 s. We probe the (de)excitation spectrum via lattice modulation spectroscopy, measuring the interaction dependence of two- and three-body bound-state energies. As a result of increased on-site three-body loss we observe resonance broadening and suppression of tunneling processes that produce three-body occupation.

Magnetic control of ultra-cold6Li and174Yb(3P2) atom mixtures with Feshbach resonances

Alexander Petrov, Constantinos Makrides, Svetlana Kotochigova

We theoretically evaluate the feasibility to form magnetically-tunable Feshbach molecules in collisions between fermionic 6 Li atoms and bosonic metastable 174 Yb( 3 P 2 ) atoms. In contrast to the well-studied alkali-metal atom collisions, collisions with meta-stable atoms are highly anisotropic. Our first-principle coupled-channel calculation of these collisions reveals the existence of broad Feshbach resonances due to the combined effect of anisotropic-molecular and atomic–hyperfine interactions. In order to fit our predictions to the specific positions of experimentally-observed broad resonance structures (Dowd et al 2014) we optimized the shape of the short-range potentials by direct least-square fitting. This allowed us to identify the dominant resonance by its leading angular momentum quantum numbers and describe the role of collisional anisotropy in the creation and broadening of this and other resonances.

Optical control of a magnetic Feshbach resonance in an ultracold Fermi gas

Zhengkun Fu, Pengjun Wang, Lianghui Huang +3 more

We use laser light near resonant with a molecular bound-to-bound transition to control a magnetic Feshbach resonance in ultracold Fermi gases of ${}^{40}$K atoms. The spectrum of excited molecular states is measured by applying a laser field that couples the ground Feshbach molecular state to electronically excited molecular states. Nine strong bound-to-bound resonances are observed below the ${}^{2}{P}_{1/2}+{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}{S}_{1/2}$ threshold. We use radio-frequency spectroscopy to characterize the laser-dressed bound state near a specific bound-to-bound resonance and show clearly the shift of the magnetic Feshbach resonance using light. The demonstrated technology could be used to modify interatomic interactions with high spatial and temporal resolutions in the crossover regime from a Bose-Einstein condensate to a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superfluid.

Spin dependent inelastic collisions between metastable state two-electron atoms and ground state alkali-atoms

F. Schäfer, Hideki Konishi, Adrien Bouscal +2 more

Experimentally the spin dependence of inelastic collisions between ytterbium (Yb) in the metastable state and lithium (Li) in the ground state manifold is investigated at low magnetic fields. Using selective excitation all magnetic sublevels m J of Yb( ) are accessed and four of the six lowest lying magnetic sublevels of are prepared by optical pumping. On the one hand, m J -independence of collisions involving Li( ) atoms is found. A systematic m J -dependence in collisions with Li( ) atoms, in particular suppressed losses for stretched collisional states, is observed on the other hand. Further, m J -changing processes are found to be of minor relevance. The span of observed inelastic collision rates is between and , and a possible origin of the observed behavior is discussed.
