Abstract

A theory of nonlinear emission of localized excitons coupled to the optical mode of the microcavity is presented.Numerical results are compared with analytical ones. The effects of exciton-exciton interaction within the quantum dots and with the reservoir formed by non-resonant pumping are considered. It is demonstrated that the nonlinearity due to the interaction strongly affects the shape of the emission spectra. The collective superradiant mode of the excitons is shown to be stable against the nonlinear effects.

Collective modes of quantum dot ensembles in microcavities

Nikita S. Averkiev, Михаил Михайлович Глазов, Alexander N. Poddubny

Emission spectra of quantum dot arrays in zero-dimensional microcavities are studied theoretically. It is shown that their form is determined by the competition between collective superradiant mode formation and inhomogeneous broadening. A random sources method is used to calculate the photoluminescence spectra from an nonresonant pumped microcavity, and a standard diagram technique is used to provide a microscopic justification for the random sources method. The emission spectra of a microcavity are analyzed taking into account the spread of exciton energy due to inhomogeneous distribution of quantum dots and tunneling between them. It is demonstrated that the luminescence spectra of strongly tunnel-coupled quantum dots are sensitive to the dot positions, and the collective mode can (under certain conditions) be stabilized by random tunneling links.

Optical spectra of a quantum dot in a microcavity in the nonlinear regime

Elena del Valle, Fabrice P. Laussy, Fabricio Macedo de Souza +1 more

The optical emission spectrum of a quantum dot in strong coupling with the single mode of a microcavity is obtained in the nonlinear regime. We study how exciton-exciton interactions alter the emission spectrum of the system, bringing the linear Rabi doublet into a multiplet structure that is strongly dependent on the cavity-exciton energy detuning. We emphasize how nonlinearity can be used to evidence the genuine quantum nature of the coupling by producing satellites peaks of the Rabi doublet that originate from the quantized energy levels of the interactions.

Linear and Nonlinear Exciton Effects in a Microcavity

Alejandra Valencia, F.J. Rodríguez

The exciton–photon effects on a microcavity are reported. In particular, the emission spectrum of a semiconductor quantum well embedded in a microcavity is obtained, including nonlinear effects such as exciton–exciton correlation. By solving the Heisenberg equations for the excitons and photons the polariton dispersion energy and the emission spectrum is calculated. It is shown the presence of collapses and revivals when the nonlinear interaction parameter is less than the exciton–photon coupling. For nonlinear exciton–exciton coupling values similar to exciton–photon coupling the results show that the time line shape is independent of the nonlinear term but the polariton peak position is blueshifted. Reasonable agreement is found with the experimental situation.

Single quantum dots in microcavities

Fabrice P. Laussy, Михаил Михайлович Глазов, Alexey Vitalievich Kavokin +1 more

In 2004 two groups have reported observation of the strong coupling regime in 3D microcavities with single quantum dots (QD). We present the quantum theory of non-linear emission of photons by such structures. We derive the exciton creation operator which coincides with a Fermi one for QDs smaller than the exciton Bohr radius and with Bose one for very large QDs. In intermediate size dots excitonic statistics is in between the Fermi and Bose ones. Consequently, the non-linear optical spectra change from the Mollow triplet in the fermionic case to the Rabi doublet in the bosonic case. We predict appearance of a characteristic multiplet structure of the non-linear emission in the intermediate regime.

Luminescence spectra of quantum dots in microcavities. III. Multiple quantum dots

Fabrice P. Laussy, Arne Laucht, Elena del Valle +2 more

We discuss the spectral line shapes of $N$ quantum dots in strong coupling with the single mode of a microcavity in the presence of a continuous, incoherent pumping. Nontrivial features in the response of the system are induced by detuning the emitters or probing the direct exciton emission spectrum. We describe dark states, quantum nonlinearities, emission dips, and interferences and show how these various effects may coexist, giving rise to highly peculiar line shapes.

Strong coupling of two interacting excitons confined in a nanocavity–quantum dot system

Paulo C Cárdenas, Nicolás Quesada, Herbert Vinck-Posada +1 more

We present a study of the strong coupling between radiation and matter, considering a system of two quantum dots, which are in mutual interaction and interact with a single mode of light confined in a semiconductor nanocavity. We take into account dissipative mechanisms such as the escape of the cavity photons, decay of the quantum dot excitons by spontaneous emission, and independent exciton pumping. It is shown that the mutual interaction between the dots can be measured off-resonance only if the strong coupling condition is reached. Using the quantum regression theorem, a reasonable definition of the dynamical coupling regimes is introduced in terms of the complex Rabi frequency. Finally, the emission spectrum for relevant conditions is presented and compared with the above definition, demonstrating that the interaction between the excitons does not affect the strong coupling.
