Abstract

We present a study of the strong coupling between radiation and matter, considering a system of two quantum dots, which are in mutual interaction and interact with a single mode of light confined in a semiconductor nanocavity. We take into account dissipative mechanisms such as the escape of the cavity photons, decay of the quantum dot excitons by spontaneous emission, and independent exciton pumping. It is shown that the mutual interaction between the dots can be measured off-resonance only if the strong coupling condition is reached. Using the quantum regression theorem, a reasonable definition of the dynamical coupling regimes is introduced in terms of the complex Rabi frequency. Finally, the emission spectrum for relevant conditions is presented and compared with the above definition, demonstrating that the interaction between the excitons does not affect the strong coupling.

Dynamics of the excitations of a quantum dot in a microcavity

J. I. Perea, Diego Porras, C. Tejedor

We study the dynamics of a quantum dot embedded in a three-dimensional microcavity in the strong coupling regime in which the quantum dot exciton has an energy close to the frequency of a confined cavity mode. Under the continuous pumping of the system, the confined electron and hole can recombine either by spontaneous emission through a leaky mode or by stimulated emission of a cavity mode that can escape from the cavity. The numerical integration of a master equation including all these effects gives the dynamics of the density matrix. By using the quantum regression theorem, we compute the first- and second-order coherence functions required to calculate the photon statistics and the spectrum of the emitted light. Our main result is the determination of a range of parameters in which a state of cavity modes with Poissonian or sub-Poissonian (nonclassical) statistics can be built up within the microcavity. Depending on the relative values of pumping and rate of stimulated emission, either one or two peaks close to the excitation energy of the dot and/or to the natural frequency of the cavity are observed in the emission spectrum. The physics behind these results is discussed.

Spontaneous emission of two quantum dots in a single-mode cavity

Liu Qiu, Ke Zhang, Zhiyuan Li

The spontaneous emission spectrum from two quantum dots (QDs) that are strongly coupled with a single-mode nanocavity is investigated using rigorous numerical calculations and simple analytical solutions of quantum dynamics. The emission spectra both from the side and along the axis of the cavity are considered. Modification of two parameters, the coupling strength and the detuning between the transition frequencies of the two quantum dots, allows us to efficiently control the shape of the spontaneous emission spectrum. Different profiles and their physical origins can be well understood in the dressed-state picture for the light—QD interaction in the on-resonance and off-resonance situations. In the on-resonance situation, the emission spectra exhibit symmetric features, and they are not altered by the asymmetry in the coupling parameters. The axis spectra show two emission peaks while the side spectra have three emission peaks. In the off-resonance situation, the emission spectra always show an asymmetrical three-peak feature. When the two QDs have different decay parameters, singular features (a peak or a dip) can take place at the frequency of the cavity mode, and this is attributed to the unbalanced process of the emission and absorption of a single photon.

Optical spectra of a quantum dot in a microcavity in the nonlinear regime

Elena del Valle, Fabrice P. Laussy, Fabricio Macedo de Souza +1 more

The optical emission spectrum of a quantum dot in strong coupling with the single mode of a microcavity is obtained in the nonlinear regime. We study how exciton-exciton interactions alter the emission spectrum of the system, bringing the linear Rabi doublet into a multiplet structure that is strongly dependent on the cavity-exciton energy detuning. We emphasize how nonlinearity can be used to evidence the genuine quantum nature of the coupling by producing satellites peaks of the Rabi doublet that originate from the quantized energy levels of the interactions.

Explanation of Photon Correlations in the Far-Off-Resonance Optical Emission from a Quantum-Dot–Cavity System

Martin Winger, Thomas Volz, Guillaume Tarel +8 more

In a coupled quantum-dot-nanocavity system, the photoluminescence from an off-resonance cavity mode exhibits strong quantum correlations with the quantum-dot transitions, even though its autocorrelation function is classical. Using new pump-power dependent photon-correlation measurements, we demonstrate that this seemingly contradictory observation that has so far defied an explanation stems from cascaded cavity photon emission in transitions between excited multiexciton states. The mesoscopic nature of quantum-dot confinement ensures the presence of a quasicontinuum of excitonic transitions, part of which overlaps with the cavity resonance.

Theoretical analysis of light emission from a coupled system of a photonic nanocavity and a quantum dot

Makoto Yamaguchi, Takashi Asano, Masayuki Fujita +1 more

Abstract This report quantum mechanically analyses a system composed of a two‐level system, a single mode cavity, and free space photon modes, which are coupled to each other. The analytical solution in the intermediate regime between the strong and weak coupling regimes is successfully obtained. It is found that the emission rate reaches its maximum when the cavity photon lifetime τcav satisfy 1/τcav = 4|g |, where 2|g | is the vacuum Rabi frequency. Also, Fano resonance is shown to occur under certain conditions. These results can be useful for high‐speed single photon sources and for fundamental understanding of the interaction between a quantum dot and a cavity mode. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
