Abstract

This paper considers a kinetic Boltzmann equation, having a general type of collision kernel and modelling spin-dependent Fermi gases at low temperatures. The distribution functions have values in the space of positive hermitean $2\times2$ complex matrices. Global existence of weak solutions is proved in $L^1\cap L^{\infty}$ for the initial value problem of this Boltzmann equation in a periodic box.

A criterion for the existence of spin waves in polarized gases in a wide temperature range

T. L. Andreeva, P. L. Rubin

We derive a kinetic equation for a polarized paramagnetic gas that is exact in the Boltzmann (binary) approximation. The equation is written in a compact form and applies to both Fermi and Bose gases in a wide temperature range as long as the Boltzmann approximation remains applicable. The derived equation is used to analyze the conditions for the propagation of spin waves in polarized Fermi and Bose gases. We deduce a universal criterion for the propagation of weakly damped spin waves in a wide temperature range. The criterion is reduced to the condition that the real parts of the particle zero-angle scattering amplitudes (or T matrices) be much larger than their imaginary parts. We derive dispersion equations for spin waves at high and low gas temperatures and show that spin waves can propagate in both these limiting cases.

Transverse spin diffusion in polarized Fermi gases

J. W. Jeon, William J. Mullin

We solve a recently derived kinetic equation for a dilute quantum system at arbitrary degeneracy and polarization, M. From this equation we develop a spin hydrodynamic equation that allows the generalization of the treatment of spin waves and the Leggett-Rice effect to polarized degenerate Fermi gases. We find a transverse spin-diffusion collision time ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ that is often shorter than the corresponding longitudinal collision time ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\parallel}}}$ that is often shorter than the corresponding longitudinal collision time ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$. As T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0, ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\parallel}}}$ approaches T-independent value, in constrast to ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$\ensuremath{\sim}1/${\mathit{T}}^{2}$. Spin waves would thus continue to be damped even to T=0 K.

Transverse spin dynamics in a spin-polarized Fermi liquid

V. P. Mineev

The linear equations for transverse spin dynamics in a weakly polarized degenerate Fermi liquid with arbitrary relationship between temperature T and polarization $\ensuremath{\gamma}H$ are derived from Landau-Silin phenomenological kinetic equation with general form of two-particle collision integral. The temperature and polarization dependence of the spin current relaxation time is established. It is found in particular that at finite polarization transverse spin wave damping has a finite value at $T=0.$ The analogy between temperature dependences of spin wave attenuation and ultrasound absorption in degenerate Fermi liquid at arbitrary temperature is presented. We also discuss spin-polarized Fermi-liquid in the general context of the Fermi-liquid theory and compare it with ``Fermi liquid'' with spontaneous magnetization.

Derivation of a matrix-valued Boltzmann equation for the Hubbard model

Martin L R Fürst, Jani Lukkarinen, Peng Mei +1 more

For the spin-1/2 Fermi–Hubbard model, we derive the kinetic equation valid for weak interactions by using a time-dependent perturbation expansion up to second order. In recent theoretical and numerical studies, the kinetic equation has merely been stated without further details. In this contribution, we provide the required background material.

Kadanoff–Baym equations and non-Markovian Boltzmann equation in generalized T-matrix approximation

D. Semkat, D. Kremp, M. Bönitz

A recently developed method [Semkat et al., Phys. Rev. E 59, 1557 (1999); Kremp et al., in Progress in Nonequilibrium Green’s Functions (World Scientific, Singapore, 2000), p. 34] for incorporating initial binary correlations into the Kadanoff–Baym equations (KBE) is used to derive a generalized T-matrix approximation for the self-energies. It is shown that the T-matrix obtains additional contributions arising from initial correlations. Using these results and taking the time-diagonal limit of the KBE, a generalized quantum kinetic equation in binary collision approximation is derived. This equation is a far-reaching generalization of Boltzmann-type kinetic equations: It self-consistently includes memory effects (retardation, off-shell T-matrices) as well as many-particle effects (damping, in-medium T-matrices) and spin-statistics effects (Pauli-blocking).

On the asymptotic behavior at the kinetic time of a weakly interacting Fermi gas

Peter S. Madsen, Phan Thành Nam, Herbert E. Spohn +1 more

This paper is devoted to the dynamics of a weakly interacting Fermi gas at the kinetic time regime $t\sim λ^{-2}$ where $λ\ll 1$ is the strength of the interaction potential. We prove that if the initial state is close to equilibrium, then the two-point time correlation function of the many-body quantum dynamics can be computed effectively. In fact, we show that its leading order behavior is determined completely by the collisional frequency of the Boltzmann-Nordheim collision operator at equilibrium. This settles a prediction by Lukkarinen-Spohn, and thus gives a justification of the quantum Boltzmann equation from many-body quantum mechanics.
