Single-atom laser generates nonlinear coherent states

Abstract

The stationary state of a single-atom (single-qubit) laser is shown to be a phase-averaged nonlinear coherent state---an eigenstate of a specific deformed annihilation operator. The solution found for the stationary state is unique and valid for all regimes of the single-qubit laser operation. We have found the parametrization of the deformed annihilation operator which provides superconvergence in finding the stationary state by iteration. It is also shown that, contrary to the case of the usual laser with constant Einstein coefficients describing transition probabilities, for the single-atom laser the interaction-induced transition probabilities effectively depend on the field intensity.

Nonlinearity and nonclassicality in single-qubit laser operation

S. Ya. Kilin, Alexander B. Mikhalychev

We investigate an incoherently pumped single-qubit laser as a system, providing optical nonlinearity for the generation of nonclassical states. We show that, in the general case of arbitrary values of coupling strength and other system parameters, the stationary state of an incoherently pumped single-qubit laser is a nonlinear coherent state, being the phase-averaged eigenstate of the deformed annihilation operator of a specific form. The manifestation of the inherent nonlinearity of the system is found in the form of the stationary state nonclassicality, present for any values of the system parameters. Another important implication of inherent system nonlinearity and nonclassicality is the impossibility of describing the lasing effect by means of field-independent spontaneous and induced transition probabilities, as in the case of a conventional laser.

Nonlinear theory of a laser with injected atomic coherence

János A. Bergou, J. Zhang, Ahmed Hourri

The influence of injected atomic coherence on a laser's operation is discussed by analyzing the semiclassical equations of motion of this system. Both stationary-steady-state and time-dependent regimes of operation are investigated. We present the dependence of the stationary laser intensity and phase on the external parameters (population inversion, amplitude of atomic coherence, and detuning). For small cavity-field detuning and large atomic coherence, both frequency and phase locking occurs. The laser frequency is locked to the atomic frequency, and the phase is locked to a value determined primarily by the phase of the atomic coherence. Under certain conditions, in the inverted regime, the output intensity is an ssS-shaped function of the atomic coherence, leading to the possibility of a bistable behavior. However, only a portion of the bistable curve gives stable stationary operation, and in critical points (the location of which depends crucially on the external parameters) time-dependent instabilities branch away. When the detuning is larger than a critical value there is neither phase nor frequency locking. We find that the time-dependent behavior of the laser intensity in this case is oscillatory (quasiperiodic), and show that there is a stable limit cycle in the phase plane of the quadratures. There is a small parameter region where a stationary steady state and an oscillatory state may coexist. We also consider the nonlinear quantum theory of a laser with injected atomic coherence, and include the effect of pumping statistics. We derive the Fokker-Planck equation for the P representation, and express the noise in terms of moments. We find that in the steady state the intensity noise can be suppressed below the shot-noise limit but that the phase fluctuations are not affected by pump regularity. For nonzero detuning, we find that transient squeezing of the phase fluctuations is possible.

Bifurcation analysis of a mean field laser equation

Franco Fagnola, Carlos M. Mora

We study the dynamics of the solution of a non-linear quantum master equation describing a simple laser under the mean field approximation. The quantum system is formed by a single mode optical cavity and a set of two level atoms that are coupled to two reservoirs. First, we establish the existence of a unique regular stationary state for the non-linear evolution equation under consideration. Second, we examine the free interaction solutions, i.e., the solutions to the non-linear quantum master equation that coincide with unitary evolutions generated by the Hamiltonian resulting from neglecting the interactions between the laser mode, atoms and the bath. We obtain that a family of non-constant free interaction solutions is born at the regular stationary state as a relevant parameter, which is denoted by $C_\mathfrak{b} $, passes through the critical value $1$. These free interaction solutions yield the periodic solutions of the Maxwell Bloch equations modeling our physical system in the framework of the semiclassical laser theory. Third, in case $ C_\mathfrak{b} < 1$ we deduce that the system converges exponentially fast to the equilibrium, and so the regular stationary state is a globally asymptotically stable equilibrium solution. Thus, the quantum system has a Hopf bifurcation at $C_\mathfrak{b} =1 $.

Quantum Squeezing of the Field of a Single-Atom Laser under Conditions of a Variable Coupling Constant

Abstract A nonstationary regime of squeezed-light generation by a single-atom laser is investigated. Dependences of the quantum-squeezing parameter and radiation intensity on modulation frequency of the atom–field coupling constant are obtained. It is demonstrated that a resonance appears at the modulation frequency equal to twice the average coupling constant, which leads to a more efficient quantum squeezing in a nonstationary harmonic regime than in the case of a stationary regime for the same values of the relaxation and pump parameters.

Quantum theory of a laser with injected atomic coherence: Quantum noise quenching via nonlinear processes

Ning Lü, János A. Bergou

A quantum theory of a two-level single-mode laser with injected atomic coherence is developed by generalizing the Scully-Lamb laser theory to a form appropriate for the analysis of a coherently pumped laser. We assume that the active atoms are prepared initially in a coherent superposition of the upper and lower levels, and we derive the master equation for the field density operator by treating the interaction of the laser field with many active atoms simultaneously. It is shown that the photon-number distribution can be exactly Poissonian. The laser operation is analyzed in terms of the Fokker-Planck equation for the laser field. Both the intensity and phase diffusion coefficients are phase sensitive and, for stable laser operation, become much smaller than those of an ordinary laser. Consequently, the injected atomic coherence reduces both the photon-number noise and phase noise simultaneously. The intensity diffusion coefficient can vanish exactly, and at the same time the phase diffusion coefficient can become very small. This leads to spontaneous-emission noise quenching in the photon-number distribution, and the laser field can become very close to a coherent state. A scheme to generate the proper form of the initial atomic coherence necessary for the quantum noise quenching is proposed and analyzed.
