Exact spin-orbital separation in a solvable model in one dimension

Abstract

A one-dimensional model of coupled spin-1/2 spins and pseudospin-1/2 orbitals with nearest-neighbor interaction is rigorously shown to exhibit spin-orbital separation by means of a nonlocal unitary transformation. On an open chain, this transformation completely decouples the spins from the orbitals in such a way that the spins become paramagnetic while the orbitals form the soluble XXZ Heisenberg model. The nature of various correlations is discussed. The more general cases, which allow spin-orbital separation by the same method, are pointed out. A generalization for the orbital pseudospin greater than 1/2 is also discussed. Some qualitative connections are drawn with the recently observed spin-orbital separation in Sr${}_{2}$CuO${}_{3}$.

Exact solution of the infinite- U Hubbard problem and other models in one dimension

Brijesh Kumar

An interacting spin-fermion model is exactly solved on an open chain. In a certain representation, it is the nearest-neighbor Hubbard model in the limit of infinite $U$ (local interaction). Exact solution of its complete energy eigenspectrum is accomplished by introducing a unitary transformation which maps the original problem to a tight-binding model of the fermions only. Physically, the exact solution implies the absence of Nagaoka ferromagnetism in the ground state for arbitrary electron densities. The present method solves a class of very general models exactly. Few more problems are discussed as an application of this unitary transform method.

Microscopic origin of spin-orbital separation in Sr 2 CuO 3

Krzysztof Wohlfeld, Satoshi Nishimoto, M. W. Haverkort +1 more

A recently performed resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiment (RIXS) at the copper ${L}_{3}$ edge in the quasi-one-dimensional Mott insulator Sr${}_{2}$CuO${}_{3}$ has revealed a significant dispersion of a single-orbital excitation (orbiton). This large and unexpected orbiton dispersion has been explained using the concept of spin-orbital fractionalization in which the orbiton, which is intrinsically coupled to the spinon in this material, liberates itself from the spinon due to the strictly one-dimensional nature of its motion. Here, we investigate this mechanism in detail by (i) deriving the microscopic spin-orbital superexchange model from the charge-transfer model for the CuO${}_{3}$ chains in Sr${}_{2}$CuO${}_{3}$, (ii) mapping the orbiton motion in the obtained spin-orbital model into a problem of a single hole moving in an effective half-filled antiferromagnetic chain $t$-$J$ model, and (iii) solving the latter model using the exact diagonalization and obtaining the orbiton spectral function. Finally, the RIXS cross section is calculated based on the obtained orbiton spectral function and compared with the RIXS experiment.

Rigorous results on a first-order phase transition in antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 coupled chains

Yang Xian

Some rigorous results are presented for a first-order quantum phase transition between the dimerized state and Haldane-type state (i.e., a state similar to the ground state of the one-dimensional spin-1 Heisenberg chain) in the spin-1/2 coupled chains with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interactions. Also presented is a class of exact excited states in both phases. A partial phase diagram of the general spin-1/2 coupled chains is discussed.

Quantum Phase Transition in the One-Dimensional XZ Model

Wojciech Brzezicki, Andrzej M. Oleś

We introduce a one-dimensional (1D) XZ model with alternating σ z i σ z i+1 and σ x i σ x i+1 interactions on even/odd bonds, interpolating between the Ising model and the quantum compass model. We present two ways of its exact solution by: (i) mapping to the quantum Ising models, and (ii) using fermions with spin 1/2. In certain cases the nearest neighbor pseudospin correlations change discontinuously at the quantum phase transition, where one finds highly degenerate ground state of the 1D compass model. Topological Order in an Entangled SU(2) ⊗XY Spin-Orbital Ring

Wojciech Brzezicki, Jacek Dziarmaga, Andrzej M. Oleś

We present rigorous topological order which emerges in a one-dimensional spin-orbital model due to the ring topology. Although this model with SU(2) spin and XY orbital interactions is known to exactly separate spins from orbitals by means of a unitary transformation on the open chain, we find that they are not quite independent when the chain is closed, and the spins form two half-rings carrying opposite quasimomenta. We show that on changing the topology from an open to a periodic chain, the degeneracy of the ground state is partially lifted while the low-energy excitations have a quadratic dispersion as a function of the total quasimomentum. This novel type of topological order which emerges from changing the topology from an open to a periodic chain is reminiscent of the infinite-U Hubbard chain.

Relaxation inS=1/2 quantum spin chains: The role of second neighbor interactions

Surajit Sen, C. N. Hoff, Dennis E. Kuhl +1 more

Most of the existing dynamical studies in one dimension on magnetic insulators have considered the simplest spin models with nearest-neighbor interactions. In real systems, however, it is possible that longer range interactions are not entirely negligible. It is expected that the inclusion of next-nearest-neighbor interactions between spins in one-dimensional spin models will introduce a multitude of new frequencies in addition to the ones already present in the dynamics that arises due to nearest-neighbor interactions. We first present an exact solution for the dynamical xx-spin-pair correlations in an Ising chain with both nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions to confirm our expectation. We next show, via an approximate analytical calculation, that the dynamical zz-spin-pair correlations in the next-nearest-neighbor transverse Ising chain when plotted as a function of time is noticeably different with respect to the exactly solvable nearest-neighbor transverse Ising chain at T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty} when the next-nearest-neighbor interaction is \ensuremath{\gtrsim}1/2 of the magnitude of the nearest-neighbor interaction. The effects could be fairly subtle in the time domain representation and in the spectral function when these additional interactions are weak (i.e., 1/2 of the nearest-neighbor interaction magnitude). The general conclusions reached in this work are expected to be valid for other simple quantum spin models such as the XY and XXZ models in one dimension. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
