Abstract

Using a simple fully quantum model in an effective exciton scheme that takes into account the system--environment interaction, we study the different regimes arising in a microcavity--quantum dot system. Our numerical calculations of the emission linewidth, emission energy, integrated intensity and second- and third-order correlation functions are in good qualitative agreement with reported experimental results. We show that the transition from the polariton-laser to the photon-laser regime can be defined through the critical points of both the negativity and the linear entropy of the steady state.

Coherence of Exciton-polariton condensates

Ezaki Hiromi, Hiromi Ezaki

A second-order coherence function of an exciton-polariton condensate is calculated in the time domain by the quantum Monte-Carlo wavefunction method. We fully consider polariton-polariton interactions within the five lowest quantized exciton-polariton branch in a one-dimensional model. Our calculated second-order coherence function qualitatively agrees with the experimental results obtained by H. Deng et.al, 1) and it approaches to one at well above threshold like an ideal photon laser. However, the polariton number distribution is broad compared with Poissonian distribution, which indicates that the polariton condensate is different from a coherent state.

Polariton quantum blockade in a photonic dot

A. Verger, Cristiano Ciuti, Iacopo Carusotto

We investigate the quantum nonlinear dynamics of a resonantly excited photonic quantum dot embedding a quantum well in the strong exciton-photon coupling regime. Within a master equation approach, we study the polariton blockade effect due to polariton-polariton interactions as a function of the photonic dot geometry, spectral linewidths and energy detuning between quantum well exciton and confined photon mode. The second order coherence function ${g}^{(2)}(t,{t}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ and the photon antibunching are calculated for both continuous wave and pulsed excitations.

Linear and Nonlinear Exciton Effects in a Microcavity

Alejandra Valencia, F.J. Rodríguez

The exciton–photon effects on a microcavity are reported. In particular, the emission spectrum of a semiconductor quantum well embedded in a microcavity is obtained, including nonlinear effects such as exciton–exciton correlation. By solving the Heisenberg equations for the excitons and photons the polariton dispersion energy and the emission spectrum is calculated. It is shown the presence of collapses and revivals when the nonlinear interaction parameter is less than the exciton–photon coupling. For nonlinear exciton–exciton coupling values similar to exciton–photon coupling the results show that the time line shape is independent of the nonlinear term but the polariton peak position is blueshifted. Reasonable agreement is found with the experimental situation.

Photon Emission as a Source of Coherent Behavior of Polaritons

Herbert Vinck-Posada, Boris A. Rodríguez, P. S. S. Guimãraes +2 more

We show that the combined effect of photon emission and Coulomb interactions may drive an exciton-polariton system towards a dynamical coherent state, even without phonon thermalization or any other relaxation mechanism. Exact diagonalization results for a finite system (a multilevel quantum dot interacting with the lowest-energy photon mode of a microcavity) are presented in support of this statement.

Density operator of a system pumped with polaritons: a Jaynes–Cummings-like approach

Nicolás Quesada, Herbert Vinck-Posada, Boris A. Rodríguez

We investigate the effects of considering two different incoherent excitation mechanisms on microcavity quantum dot systems modeled using the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian. When the system is incoherently pumped with polaritons it is able to sustain a large number of photons inside the cavity with Poisson-like statistics in the stationary limit, and it also leads to a separable exciton-photon state. We also investigate the effects of both types of pumpings (excitonic and polaritonic) in the emission spectrum of the cavity. We show that the polaritonic pumping considered here is unable to modify the dynamical regimes of the system at variance with the excitonic pumping. Finally, we obtain a closed form expression for the negativity of the density matrices that the quantum master equation considered here generates.

Second-order correlations in an exciton-polariton Rabi oscillator

Yuri G. Rubo, A. S. Sheremet, Alexey Vitalievich Kavokin

We develop the theoretical formalism to calculate second-order correlations in dissipative exciton-polariton system and we propose intensity-intensity correlation experiments to reveal the physics of exciton-light coupling in semiconductor microcavities in the Rabi oscillation regime. We predict a counterintuitive behavior of the correlator between upper and lower polariton branches: Due to the decoherence caused by stochastic exciton-photon conversions this correlator is expected to decrease below 1, while the individual second-order coherence of upper and lower polaritons exhibits nonmonotonous bunching.
