Abstract

We investigate the zero-temperature quantum phases of a Bose-Bose mixture on a triangular lattice using the bosonic dynamical mean-field theory (BDMFT). We consider the case of total filling where geometric frustration arises for asymmetric hopping. We map out a rich ground-state phase diagram including $xy$-ferromagnetic, spin-density wave, superfluid, and supersolid phases. In particular, we identify a stripe spin-density wave phase for highly asymmetric hopping. On top of the spin-density wave, we find that the system generically shows weak charge (particle) density wave order.

Pair superfluid and supersolid of correlated hard-core bosons on a triangular lattice

Hong‐Chen Jiang, Liang Fu, Cenke Xu

We have systematically studied the hard-core Bose-Hubbard model with correlated hopping on a triangular lattice using the density-matrix renormalization group method. A rich ground-state phase diagram is determined. In this phase diagram there is a supersolid phase and a pair superfluid phase due to the interplay between the ordinary frustrated boson hopping and an unusual correlated hopping. In particular, we find that the quantum phase transition between the supersolid phase and the pair superfluid phase is continuous.

Quantum phases of hardcore bosons with repulsive dipolar density-density interactions on two-dimensional lattices

Jan Alexander Koziol, Giovanna Morigi, Kai Phillip Schmidt

We analyse the ground-state quantum phase diagram of hardcore Bosons interacting with repulsive dipolar potentials. The bosons dynamics is described by the extended-Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian on a two-dimensional lattice. The ground state results from the interplay between the lattice geometry and the long-range interactions, which we account for by means of a classical spin mean-field approach limited by the size of the considered unit cells. This extended classical spin mean-field theory accounts for the long-range density-density interaction without truncation. We consider three different lattice geometries: square, honeycomb, and triangular. In the limit of zero hopping the ground state is always a devil’s staircase of solid (gapped) phases. Such crystalline phases with broken translational symmetry are robust with respect to finite hopping amplitudes. At intermediate hopping amplitudes, these gapped phases melt, giving rise to various lattice supersolid phases, which can have exotic features with multiple sublattice densities. At sufficiently large hoppings the ground state is a superfluid. The stability of phases predicted by our approach is gauged by comparison to the known quantum phase diagrams of the Bose-Hubbard model with nearest-neighbour interactions as well as quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the dipolar case on the square and triangular lattice. Our results are of immediate relevance for experimental realisations of self-organised crystalline ordering patterns in analogue quantum simulators, e.g., with ultracold dipolar atoms in an optical lattice.

Supersolidity of cold-atom Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices

Peter P. Orth, Doron L. Bergman, Karyn Le Hur

We investigate a cold-atom mixture of spinless bosons and fermions in two-dimensional optical lattices. In the presence of a nested Fermi surface, the bosons may develop a fascinating supersolid behavior characterized by a finite superfluid density as well as a spatial density wave order. Focusing on the triangular lattice geometry and combining a general Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson approach with microscopically derived mean-field theory, we find an exotic supersolid phase at a fermionic band filling of ${n}_{f}=3∕4$ with a kagome-type crystalline order. We also address the case of anisotropic hopping amplitudes and show that striped supersolid phases emerge on the square and triangular lattices. For weak interactions, the supersolid competes with phase separation. For strong intraspecies and interspecies interactions, with the total number of fermions and bosons corresponding to one particle per site, the bosons form an alternating Mott insulator ground state. Finally, for a mixture of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}^{40}\mathrm{K}$ and $^{23}\mathrm{Na}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$, we show that supersolidity can be observed in the range of accessible temperatures in the square lattice geometry.

Two-species hard-core bosons on the triangular lattice: A quantum Monte Carlo study

Jian-Ping Lv, Qing‐Hu Chen, Youjin Deng

Using worm-type quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate bosonic mixtures on a triangular lattice of two species of bosons, which interact via nearest-neighbor intraspecies ($V$) and on-site interspecies ($U$) repulsions. For the case of symmetric hopping amplitude (${t}_{A}/V={t}_{B}/V$) and $U/V=1$, we determine a rich ground-state phase diagram that contains double-solid, double-superfluid, supersolid (SS), solid-superfluid (solid-SF), and counterflow supersolid (CSS) states. The SS, solid-SF, and CSS states exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking among the three sublattices of the triangular lattice and between the two species, which leads to a nonzero crystalline density wave order in each species. We, furthermore, show that the CSS and the SS states are present for ${t}_{A}/V\ensuremath{\ne}{t}_{B}/V$, and the latter even survives up to the ${t}_{A}/V\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ or ${t}_{B}/V\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ limit. The effects induced by the variation of $U/V$ and by the imbalance of particle numbers of the two species are also explored.

Competing supersolids of Bose-Bose mixtures in a triangular lattice

Fabien Trousselet, Pamela Rueda‐Fonseca, Arnaud Ralko

We study the ground-state properties of a frustrated two-species mixture of hard-core bosons on a triangular lattice, as a function of tunable amplitudes for tunneling and interactions. By combining three different methods, a self-consistent cluster mean-field, exact diagonalization, and effective theories, we unravel a very rich and complex phase diagram. More specifically, we discuss the existence of three original mixture supersolids: (i) a commensurate with frozen densities and supersolidity in spin degrees of freedom, in a regime of strong interspecies interactions; and (ii) when this interaction is weaker, two mutually competing incommensurate supersolids. Finally, we show how these phases can be stabilized by a quantum fluctuation enhancement of peculiar insulating parent states.

Bose-Fermi Mixtures: A Mean-Field Study

Marin Bukov

We study the low-energy properties of the spinful Bose-Fermi Hubbard model on a simple cubic lattice for attractive fermion-fermion and repulsive boson-boson interactions at half-filling for the fermions and unit-filling for the bosons. Recent DMFT results predict a variety of phases, including superfluids, charge density waves, mixed states and supersolids. We develop a self-consistent mean-field scheme which allows for all orders to appear and determine the ground state of the system by comparing the corresponding energies. In the double superfluid phase, we consider possibilities for exotic extended s-, p- and d-wave boson-assisted superfluidity.
