Abstract

Uncertainty relations capture the essence of the inevitable randomness associated with the outcomes of two incompatible quantum measurements. Recently, Berta et al. [Nature Phys. 6, 659 (2010)] have shown that the lower bound on the uncertainties of the measurement outcomes depends on the correlations between the observed system and an observer who possesses a quantum memory. If the system is maximally entangled with its memory, the outcomes of two incompatible measurements made on the system can be predicted precisely. Here, we obtain an uncertainty relation that tightens the lower bound of Berta et al. by incorporating an additional term that depends on the quantum discord and the classical correlations of the joint state of the observed system and the quantum memory. We discuss several examples of states for which our lower bound is tighter than the bound of Berta et al. On the application side, we discuss the relevance of our inequality for the security of quantum key distribution and show that it can be used to provide bounds on the distillable common randomness and the entanglement of formation of bipartite quantum states.

The role of quantum discord in reduction of the lower bound of entropic uncertainty relation in presence of quantum memory

Tanumoy Pramanik, Shiladitya Mal

The uncertainty of measurement on a quantum system can be reduced in presence of quantum memory [M. Berta et. al. Nature Phys. {\bf 6}, 659 (2010)]. By measurement on quantum memory, some information (non-classical information) is inaccessible, hence, it limits the lower bound of entropic uncertainty relation. In the present work, we improve the lower bound of entropic uncertainty relation in presence of quantum memory by considering inaccessibility of non classical correlation at Bob side and also compare the lower bound given by M. Berta et. al. and our prescription for two different kind of shared bipartite state.

Tightening the entropic uncertainty bound in the presence of quantum memory

Farzin Adabi, S. Salimi, Soroush Haseli

The uncertainty principle is a fundamental principle in quantum physics. It implies that the measurement outcomes of two incompatible observables cannot be predicted simultaneously. In quantum information theory, this principle can be expressed in terms of entropic measures. M. Berta et al. [Nat. Phys. 6, 659 (2010)] have indicated that uncertainty bound can be altered by considering a particle as a quantum memory correlating with the primary particle. In this article, we obtain a lower bound for entropic uncertainty in the presence of a quantum memory by adding an additional term depending on the Holevo quantity and mutual information. We conclude that our lower bound will be tightened with respect to that of Berta et al. when the accessible information about measurements outcomes is less than the mutual information about the joint state. Some examples have been investigated for which our lower bound is tighter than Berta et al.'s lower bound. Using our lower bound, a lower bound for the entanglement of formation of bipartite quantum states has been obtained, as well as an upper bound for the regularized distillable common randomness.

Fine-Grained Lower Limit of Entropic Uncertainty in the Presence of Quantum Memory

Tanumoy Pramanik, Priyanka Chowdhury, A. S. Majumdar

The limitation on obtaining precise outcomes of measurements performed on two noncommuting observables of a particle as set by the uncertainty principle in its entropic form can be reduced in the presence of quantum memory. We derive a new entropic uncertainty relation based on fine graining, which leads to an ultimate limit on the precision achievable in measurements performed on two incompatible observables in the presence of quantum memory. We show that our derived uncertainty relation tightens the lower bound set by entropic uncertainty for members of the class of two-qubit states with maximally mixed marginals, while accounting for the recent experimental results using maximally entangled pure states and mixed Bell-diagonal states. An implication of our uncertainty relation on the security of quantum key generation protocols is pointed out.

Tightening the tripartite quantum-memory-assisted entropic uncertainty relation

Hazhir Dolatkhah, Soroush Haseli, S. Salimi +1 more

The uncertainty principle determines the distinction between the classical and the quantum world. This principle states that it is not possible to measure two incompatible observables with the desired accuracy simultaneously. In quantum information theory, the Shannon entropy is used as an appropriate measure to express the uncertainty relation. Improving the bound of the entropic uncertainty relation is of great importance. The bound can be varied by considering an extra quantum system as the quantum memory which is correlated with the measured quantum system. One can extend the bipartite quantum-memory-assisted entropic uncertainty relation to the tripartite one in which the memory is split into two parts. Here, a lower bound is obtained for the tripartite quantum-memory-assisted entropic uncertainty relation. This lower bound has two extra terms compared with the lower bound in Renes and Boileau [J. M. Renes and J.-C. Boileau, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 020402 (2013)] which depends on the conditional von Neumann entropy, the Holevo quantity, and the mutual information. It is shown that the bound is tighter than other bounds derived earlier. It also leads to a lower bound for the quantum secret key rate. In addition, it is applied to obtain the states for which both the strong subadditivity and the Koashi-Winter inequalities turn into equalities.

Improved uncertainty relation in the presence of quantum memory

Yunlong Xiao, Naihuan Jing, Shao-Ming Fei +1 more

Abstract Berta et al ’s uncertainty principle in the presence of quantum memory (Berta et al 2010 Nat. Phys . 6 659 ) reveals uncertainties with quantum side information between the observables. In the recent important work of Coles and Piani (2014 Phys. Rev . A 89 022112 ), the entropic sum is controlled by the first and second maximum overlaps between the two projective measurements. We generalize the entropic uncertainty relation in the presence of quantum memory and find the exact dependence on all d largest overlaps between two measurements on any d -dimensional Hilbert space. Our bound is rigorously shown to be strictly tighter than previous entropic bounds in the presence of quantum memory, which have potential applications to quantum cryptography with entanglement witnesses and quantum key distributions.

Quantum correlation enhanced bound of the information exclusion principle

Jun Zhang, Kan He, Hao Zhang +1 more

We investigate the information exclusion principle for multiple measurements with assistance of multiple quantum memories that are well bounded by the upper and lower bounds. The lower bound depends on the observables’ complementarity and the complementarity of uncertainty whilst the upper bound includes the complementarity of the observables, quantum discord, and quantum condition entropy. In quantum measurement processing, there exists a relationship between the complementarity of uncertainty and the complementarity of information. In addition, based on the information exclusion principle the complementarity of uncertainty and the shareability of quantum discord can exist as an essential factor to enhance the bounds of each other in the presence of quantum memory.
