Exchange fluctuation theorem for correlated quantum systems

Abstract

We extend the exchange fluctuation theorem for energy exchange between thermal quantum systems beyond the assumption of molecular chaos, and describe the nonequilibrium exchange dynamics of correlated quantum states. The relation quantifies how the tendency for systems to equilibrate is modified in high-correlation environments. In addition, a more abstract approach leads us to a "correlation fluctuation theorem". Our results elucidate the role of measurement disturbance for such scenarios. We show a simple application by finding a semiclassical maximum work theorem in the presence of correlations. We also present a toy example of qubit-qudit heat exchange, and find that non-classical behaviour such as deterministic energy transfer and anomalous heat flow are reflected in our exchange fluctuation theorem.

Generalized Quantum Fluctuation Theorem for Energy Exchange

Wei Wu, Jun‐Hong An

The nonequilibrium fluctuation relation is a cornerstone of quantum thermodynamics. It is widely believed that the system-bath heat exchange obeys the famous Jarzynski-Wójcik fluctuation theorem. However, this theorem is established in the Born-Markovian approximation under the weak-coupling condition. Via studying the energy exchange between a harmonic oscillator and its coupled bath in the non-Markovian dynamics, we establish a generalized quantum fluctuation theorem for energy exchange being valid for arbitrary coupling strength. The Jarzynski-Wójcik fluctuation theorem is recovered in the weak-coupling limit. We also find the average energy exchange exhibits rich nonequilibrium characteristics when different numbers of system-bath bound states are formed, which suggests a useful way to control the quantum heat. Deepening our understanding of the fluctuation relation in quantum thermodynamics, our result lays the foundation to design high-efficiency quantum heat engines.

Exchange Fluctuation Theorems for Non-Markovian Baths in Quantum Collisional Model

Sayan Mondal, Sukrut Mondkar, Ujjwal Sen

The quantum exchange fluctuation theorem relates the probabilities of observing heat transfer along and against the temperature gradient between thermal baths at different temperatures. We investigate how this relation generalizes when the baths exhibit non-Markovian dynamics. Using a microscopic collisional model, bath memory is generated through interactions between successive bath auxiliaries before each heat-exchange collision. We derive exchange fluctuation theorems for both direct bath-bath interactions and probe-mediated heat exchange in the steady-state regime. As an illustrative example, we consider heat baths with qubit auxiliaries and show that non-Markovian memory enhances the probability of heat-transfer events against the temperature gradient, modifying the predictions made by the conventional Jarzynski-Wójcik exchange fluctuation theorem. Our results establish a microscopic connection between environmental memory and non-equilibrium heat-exchange statistics.

Fluctuation theorems for multipartite quantum coherence and correlation dynamics

Kun Zhang, Mo-Yang Ni, Hailong Shi +2 more

Fluctuation theorems establish exact relations for nonequilibrium dynamics, profoundly advancing the field of stochastic thermodynamics. In this work, we extend quantum fluctuation theorems beyond the traditional thermodynamic framework to quantum multipartite information dynamics, where both the system and the environment are multipartite without assuming any thermodynamic constraints. Based on the two-point measurement scheme and the classical probability, we establish the fluctuation theorem for the dynamics of classical multipartite mutual information. By extending to quasiprobability, we derive quantum fluctuation theorems for multipartite coherence and quantum correlations, presenting them in both integral and detailed forms. Our theoretical results are illustrated and verified using three-qubit examples, and feasible experimental verification protocols are proposed. These findings uncover the statistical structure underlying the nonequilibrium quantum information dynamics, providing fundamental insights and alternative tools for advancing quantum technologies.

Quasiprobability Distribution for Heat Fluctuations in the Quantum Regime

Amikam Levy, Matteo Lostaglio

The standard approach to deriving fluctuation theorems fails to capture the effect of quantum correlation and coherence in the initial state of the system. Here, we overcome this difficulty and derive the heat-exchange-fluctuation theorem in the full quantum regime by showing that the energy exchange between two locally thermal states in the presence of initial quantum correlations is faithfully captured by a quasiprobability distribution. Its negativities, being associated with proofs of contextuality, are proxies of nonclassicality. We discuss the thermodynamic interpretation of negative probabilities and provide heat-flow inequalities that can only be violated in their presence.Remarkably, testing these fully quantum inequalities, at an arbitrary dimension, is no more difficult than testing traditional fluctuation theorems. We test these results on data collected in a recent experiment studying the heat transfer between two qubits and give examples for the capability of witnessing negative probabilities at higher dimensions.

The Exchange Fluctuation Theorem in Quantum Mechanics

S. Akagawa, N. Hatano

We study the heat transfer between two finite quantum systems initially at different temperatures. We find that a recently proposed fluctuation theorem for heat exchange, namely the exchange fluctuation theorem [C. Jarzynski and D. K. Wójcik, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92 (2004), 230602], does not generally hold in the presence of a finite heat transfer as in the original form proved for weak coupling. As the coupling is weakened, the deviation from the theorem and the heat transfer vanish in the same order of the coupling. We then discover a condition for the exchange fluctuation theorem to hold in the presence of a finite heat transfer, namely the commutable-coupling condition. We explicitly calculate the deviation from the exchange fluctuation theorem as well as the heat transfer for simple models. We confirm for the models that the deviation indeed has a finite value as far as the coupling between the two systems is finite except for the special point of the commutable-coupling condition. We also confirm analytically that the commutable-coupling condition indeed lets the exchange fluctuation theorem hold exactly under a finite heat transfer.
