Abstract

We have analytically explored thermodynamics of free Bose and Fermi gases for the entire range of temperature, and have extended the same for harmonically trapped cases. We have obtained approximate chemical potentials of the quantum gases in closed forms of temperature so that the thermodynamic properties of the quantum gases become plausible specially in the intermediate regime between the classical and quantum limits.

Chemical potentials and thermodynamic characteristics of ideal Bose- and Fermi-gases in the region of quantum degeneracy

Andrii Sotnikov, K. V. Sereda, Yu. V. Slyusarenko

Calculations of chemical potentials for ideal monatomic gases with Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics as functions of temperature, across the temperature region that is typical for the collective quantum degeneracy effect, are presented. Numerical calculations are performed without any additional approximations, and explicit dependences of the chemical potentials on temperature are constructed at a fixed density of gas particles. Approximate polynomial dependences of chemical potentials on temperature are obtained that allow for the results to be used in further studies without re-applying the involved numerical methods. The ease of using the obtained representations is demonstrated on examples of deformation of distribution for a population of energy states at low temperatures, and on the impact of quantum statistics (exchange interaction) on the equations of state for ideal gases and some of the thermodynamic properties thereof. The results of this study essentially unify two opposite limiting cases in an intermediate region that are used to describe the equilibrium states of ideal gases, which are well known from university courses on statistical physics, thus adding value from an educational point of view.

Systematic semiclassical expansion for harmonically trapped ideal Bose gases

Axel Pelster, Physical Journal B, Axel Pelster

Abstract. Using a field-theoretic approach, we systematically generalize the usual semiclassical approximation for a harmonically trapped ideal Bose gas in such a way that its range of applicability is essentially extended. With this we can analytically calculate thermodynamic properties even for small particle numbers. In particular, it now becomes possible to determine the critical temperature as well as the temperature dependence of both heat capacity and condensate fraction in low-dimensional traps, where the standard semiclassical approximation is not even applicable. Chemical potential, Gibbs–Duhem equation and quantum gases

M. Howard Lee

Thermodynamic relations like the Gibbs–Duhem are valid from the lowest to the highest temperatures. But they cannot by themselves provide any specific temperature behavior of thermodynamic functions like the chemical potential. In this work, we show that if some general conditions are attached to the Gibbs–Duhem equation, it is possible to obtain the low temperature form of the chemical potential for the ideal Fermi and Bose gases very directly.

Thermodynamic functions of the Fermi gas at arbitrary temperatures

Yu. M. Poluéktov, A. A. Soroka

Thermodynamic functions of the ideal Fermi gas at arbitrary temperatures are calculated using the standard Fermi-Stoner functions. The properties of the Fermi-Stoner functions are analyzed. The limiting cases of low-temperature and classical limits with taking into account quantum corrections and the special case of zero chemical potential are considered.

Chemical potential for the Bose gases in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

T G Liu, M Y Niu, Quanhui Liu

A closed expression for the chemical potential of Bose gases in an external one-dimensional harmonic trap, reported recently in this journal (Mungan 2009 Chemical potential of one-dimensional simple harmonic oscillators Eur. J. Phys. 30 1131–6 ), is approximate and not applicable for temperatures lower than a characteristic value below which the ground state becomes occupied by a macroscopic number of particles. In this letter, the correct behaviour of the chemical potential at low temperature is addressed.

Scaling and Thermodynamics of a Trapped Bose-Condensed Gas

S. Giorgini, Лев П. Питаевский, S. Stringari

We investigate the thermodynamics of a Bose gas interacting with repulsive forces and confined in a harmonic trap. We show that the relevant parameters of the system (temperature, number $N$ of atoms, harmonic oscillator length, deformation of the trap, $s$-wave scattering length) fix its thermodynamic behavior in the large $N$ limit through two dimensionless scaling parameters. These are the reduced temperature $t\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}T/{T}_{c}^{0}$ and the ratio $\ensuremath{\eta}$ between the $T\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0$ value of the chemical potential, evaluated in the Thomas-Fermi limit, and the critical temperature ${T}_{c}^{0}$ of the noninteracting model. The scaling functions relative to the condensate fraction, energy, chemical potential, and moment of inertia are calculated within the Popov approximation.
