Efficient iterative decoding of LDPC in the presence of strong phase noise

Abstract

In this paper we propose a new efficient message passing algorithm for decoding LDPC transmitted over a channel with strong phase noise. The algorithm performs approximate bayesian inference on a factor graph representation of the channel and code joint posterior. The approximate inference is based on an improved canonical model for the messages of the Sum & Product Algorithm, and a method for clustering the messages using the directional statistics framework. The proposed canonical model includes treatment for phase slips which can limit the performance of tracking algorithms. We show simulation results and complexity analysis for the proposed algorithm demonstrating its superiority over some of the current state of the art algorithms.

Algorithms for iterative decoding in the presence of strong phase noise

Giulio Colavolpe, Alan Barbieri, Giuseppe Caire

We present two new iterative decoding algorithms for channels affected by strong phase noise and compare them with the best existing algorithms proposed in the literature. The proposed algorithms are obtained as an application of the sum-product algorithm to the factor graph representing the joint a posteriori probability mass function of the information bits given the channel output. In order to overcome the problems due to the presence in the factor graph of continuous random variables, we apply the method of canonical distributions . Several choices of canonical distributions have been considered in the literature. Well-known approaches consist of discretizing continuous variables or treating them as jointly Gaussian, thus obtaining a Kalman estimator. Our first new approach, based on the Fourier series expansion of the phase probability density function, yields better complexity/performance tradeoff with respect to the usual discretized-phase method. Our second new approach, based on the Tikhonov canonical distribution, yields near-optimal performance at very low complexity and is shown to be much more robust than the Kalman method to the placement of pilot symbols in the coded frame. We present numerical results for binary LDPC codes and LDPC-coded modulation, with particular reference to some phase-noise models and coded-modulation formats standardized in the next-generation satellite Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-S2). These results show that our algorithms achieve near-coherent performance at very low complexity without requiring any change to the existing DVB-S2 standard.

Bayesian and non-bayesian methods for joint decoding and detection in the presence of phase noise

Giulio Colavolpe, Alan Barbieri, Giuseppe Caire +1 more

This paper proposes new algorithms for joint iterative decoding and parameter estimation in Bayesian and nonBayesian method. The low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes in the presence of phase noise is focused in this paper. The nonBayesian algorithm for an unknown phase channel is based on the application of the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. The proposed Bayesian algorithms are obtained as an application of the sum-product algorithm to the factor graph. Comparing the performance of the considered algorithms in the case of LDPC code, the EM-KL (EM-Karhunen-Loeve) algorithm performs better than EM-SW (sliding window) algorithm.

Decoding of low-density parity-check codes based on noise soft-decision over finite-state Markov channels

He-Qin Zhou

An improved decoding algorithm for low-density parity-check code(LDPC) on finite-state Markov channels was presented and the corresponding factor graph representation was given. It consists of two parts: standard sum-product algorithm(SPA) for LDPC and forward-backward(FB) algorithm for Markov channel. After each iteration for SPA,FB re-estimated the channel likelihood ratio for the next iteration of SPA based on soft decisions for noise bits from SPA.Considering more cycles in the factor graph with the introduction of the Markov channel node, the probabilistic schedule was used to update the message during the iterations for decoding.Simulation results show that the algorithm not only performs much better than the standard sum-product algorithm, but also outperforms the algorithm based on hard decisions for noise bits.

Optimum message mapping LDPC decoders derived from the sum-product algorithm

Jan Lewandowsky, Maximilian Stark, Gerhard Bauch

Starting from a discrete density evolution scheme originally introduced by Brian M. Kurkoski et al. which we improved by applying the Information Bottleneck method, we recently presented results on message passing decoders for Low Density Parity Check codes that have much lower complexity than state of the art decoders. In the decoders all node operations are replaced by discrete message mappings of unsigned integers what yields a great complexity reduction. Anyway the decoders perform very close to belief propagation decoding. New included simulation results prove that using a 4 bit integer architecture these decoders loose only 0.1 dB over Eb/No in comparison to an exact belief propagation decoder applied to the quantized output of a Gaussian channel. The most important contribution of this paper is the derivation of the message mapping decoders from the sum-product algorithm. Until now these decoders are assumed to not be linked to this algorithm. In order to reveal the hidden connection, we explain the decoding principle of the message mapping decoders in general factor graphs.

A Novel Stochastic Decoding of LDPC Codes with Quantitative Guarantees

Nima Noorshams, Aravind Raghava Iyengar

Low-density parity-check codes, a class of capacity-approaching linear codes, are particularly recognized for their efficient decoding scheme. The decoding scheme, known as the sum-product, is an iterative algorithm consisting of passing messages between variable and check nodes of the factor graph. The sum-product algorithm is fully parallelizable, owing to the fact that all messages can be update concurrently. However, since it requires extensive number of highly interconnected wires, the fully-parallel implementation of the sum-product on chips is exceedingly challenging. Stochastic decoding algorithms, which exchange binary messages, are of great interest for mitigating this challenge and have been the focus of extensive research over the past decade. They significantly reduce the required wiring and computational complexity of the message-passing algorithm. Even though stochastic decoders have been shown extremely effective in practice, the theoretical aspect and understanding of such algorithms remains limited at large. Our main objective in this paper is to address this issue. We first propose a novel algorithm referred to as the Markov based stochastic decoding. Then, we provide concrete quantitative guarantees on its performance for tree-structured as well as general factor graphs. More specifically, we provide upper-bounds on the first and second moments of the error, illustrating that the proposed algorithm is an asymptotically consistent estimate of the sum-product algorithm. We also validate our theoretical predictions with experimental results, showing we achieve comparable performance to other practical stochastic decoders.

Design of LDPC Codes Robust to Noisy Message-Passing Decoding

Alla Tarighati, Hamed Farhadi, Farshad Lahouti

We address noisy message-passing decoding of lowdensity parity-check (LDPC) codes over additive white Gaussian noise channels. Message-passing decoders in which certain processing units iteratively exchange messages are common for decoding LDPC codes. The exchanged messages are in general subject to internal noise in hardware implementation of these decoders. We model the internal decoder noise as additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) degrading exchanged messages. Using Gaussian approximation of the exchanged messages, we perform a two-dimensional density evolution analysis for the noisy LDPC decoder. This makes it possible to track both the mean, and the variance of the exchanged message densities, and hence, to quantify the threshold of the LDPC code in the presence of internal decoder noise. The numerical and simulation results are presented that quantify the performance loss due to the internal decoder noise. To partially compensate this performance loss, we propose a simple method, based on EXIT chart analysis, to design robust irregular LDPC codes. The simulation results indicate that the designed codes can indeed compensate part of the performance loss due to the internal decoder noise.
