Abstract

We revisit the problem of a single quantum impurity on the edge of a two-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological insulator and show that the zero-temperature phase diagram contains a large local moment region for antiferromagnetic Kondo coupling, which was missed by previous poor man's scaling treatments. The combination of an exact solution at the so-called decoupling point and a renormalization group analysis \`a la Anderson-Yuval-Hamann allows us to access the regime of strong electron-electron interactions on the edge and strong Kondo coupling. We apply similar methods to the problem of a regular one-dimensional array of quantum impurities interacting with the edge liquid. When the edge electrons are at half-filling with respect to the impurity lattice, the system remains gapless unless the Luttinger parameter of the edge is less than $1/2$ in which case two-particle backscattering effects drive the system to a gapped phase with long-range Ising antiferromagnetic order. This is in marked contrast with the gapped disordered ground state of the ordinary half-filled one-dimensional Kondo lattice.

Quantum dot in a two-dimensional topological insulator: The two-channel Kondo fixed point

K. T. Law, Chien-Yeah Seng, Patrick A. Lee +1 more

A quantum dot coupled to two helical edge states of a two-dimensional topological insulator through electron tunnelings is studied. We show that if the electron interactions on the edge states are repulsive, with Luttinger liquid parameter $K<1$, the system reaches a stable two-channel Kondo fixed point at low temperatures. This is in contrast to the Luttinger liquid leads case in which $K<1/2$ is needed. This two-channel fixed point is described by a boundary sine-Gordon Hamiltonian with a $K$ dependent boundary term. The impurity entropy, the impurity specific heat and the conductance are calculated.

Phase transition in the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model with attractive electron-electron interaction

Naokazu Shibata, Manfred Sigrist, Elmar Heeb

The one-dimensional Kondo lattice model with attractive interaction among the conduction electrons is analyzed in the case of half-filling. It is shown that there are three distinct phases depending on the coupling constants of the model. Two phases have a spin and charge gap. While one shows a clear distinction of the spin and charge excitation spectrum the other phase may be characterized as a band insulator type where both excitations are due to two-particle states. The third phase is gapless in both channels and has quasi-long-range order in the spin- and charge-density-wave correlation. In this phase the spin and charge excitations have a clearly separated spectrum. For the analysis we discuss first two limiting cases. Then a density matrix renormalization group calculation on finite systems is applied to determine the phase diagram and the correlation functions in the gapped and gapless phase for general coupling constants.

Strong Backscatterer at the Edge of a Two-dimensional Topological Insulator

Jun-Hui Zheng, Miguel A. Cazalilla

We study the problem of a backcattering impurity coupled to the edge states of a two-dimensional topological insulator. In the regime where the backscattering potential is larger than the band gap and accounting for electron-electron interactions, it is s hown that the system can be described as a resonant level coupled to the one-dimensional (1D) channel of interacting edge electrons. We discuss the relationship of this system to the model of a (structureless) impurity in a 1D interacting electron liquid. Differently from the latter, transmission is suppressed for both repulsive and weak to moderate attractive interactions in the resonant regime.

Quantum phase transition in a gapped Anderson model: A numerical renormalization group study

Cătălin Paşcu Moca, Adrian Roman

We use the numerical renormalization group method to investigate the spectral properties of a single-impurity Anderson model with a gap $\ensuremath{\delta}$ across the Fermi level in the conduction-electron spectrum. For any finite $\ensuremath{\delta}>0$, at half filling the ground state of the system is always a doublet. Away from half filling a quantum phase transition (QPT) occurs as function of the gap value $\ensuremath{\delta}$, and the system evolves from the strong-coupling (SC) Kondo-type state, corresponding to $\ensuremath{\delta}<{\ensuremath{\delta}}_{C}$ toward a localized moment (LM) regime for $\ensuremath{\delta}>{\ensuremath{\delta}}_{C}$. The opening of the gap leads to the formation of one (two) bound states when the system is in the SC (LM) regime. The evolution across the QPT of their positions and the corresponding weights together with the dynamic properties of the model are investigated.

Haldane phase in one-dimensional topological Kondo insulators

Alejandro Mezio, Alejandro M. Lobos, A. Dobry +1 more

We investigate the ground-state properties of a recently proposed model for a topological Kondo insulator in one dimension (i.e., the $p$-wave Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model) by means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method. The nonstandard Kondo interaction in this model is different from the usual (i.e., local) Kondo interaction in that the localized spins couple to the ``$p$-wave'' spin density of conduction electrons, inducing a topologically nontrivial insulating ground state. Based on the analysis of the charge- and spin-excitation gaps, the string order parameter, and the spin profile in the ground state, we show that, at half filling and low energies, the system is in the Haldane phase and hosts topologically protected spin-1/2 end states. Beyond its intrinsic interest as a useful ``toy model'' to understand the effects of strong correlations on topological insulators, we show that the $p$-wave Kondo-Heisenberg model could be experimentally implemented in $p\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{band}$ optical lattices loaded with ultracold Fermi gases.

Phase Diagram of the Two-Dimensional Anderson-Hubbard Model

Jaichul Yi Lizeng Zhang, Geoffrey Canright

We study the ground state of the two-dimensional Anderson-Hubbard model using a quantum real space renormalization group method. We obtain the phase diagram near half filling. The system is always insulating with disorder. At half filling, the system undergoes a transition from a gapless (Anderson) insulator to an incompressible (Mott-Hubbard) insulator as the interaction $U$ reaches a critical value $U_c$. Away from half filling, the insulating phase is always gapless and is found to be controlled by the Anderson fixed point at half filling. This result is similar to that obtained in the corresponding one dimensional system and suggests strongly the importance of the electron-electron correlation in this gapless insulating phase.
