Abstract

We propose a scenario to create a topological superfluid in a periodically driven two-dimensional square optical lattice. We study the phase diagram of a spin-orbit coupled $s$-wave pairing superfluid in a periodically driven two-dimensional square optical lattice. We find that a phase transition from a trivial superfluid to a topological superfluid occurs when the potentials of the optical lattices are periodically changed. The topological phase is called the Floquet topological superfluid and can host Majorana fermions.

Floquet Topological Superfluid and Majorana Zero Modes in Two-Dimensional Periodically Driven Fermi Systems

Xiaosen Yang, Beibing Huang, Zhengling Wang

Abstract We propose a simple approach to realize two-dimensional Floquet topological superfluid by periodically tuning the depth of square optical lattice potentials. We show that the periodic driving can induce topological phase transitions between trivial superfluid and Floquet topological superfluid. For this systems we verify the anomalous bulk-boundary correspondence, namely that the robust chiral Floquet edge states can appear even when the winding number of all the bulk Floquet bands is zero. We establish the existence of two Floquet Majorana zero modes separated in the quasienergy space, with ε0,π = 0,π/T at the topological defects.

Phase diagram and topological superfluid state of spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas with attractive interactions in a one-dimensional optical lattice

Haiping Hu, Cheng Chen, Yucheng Wang +2 more

Based on density matrix renormalization group method, we investigate the spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas with attractive interactions in one-dimensional optical lattice and present a complete phase diagram for a quarter-filling system with intermediate strong interactions. We unveil the exotic pairings induced by spin-orbit couplings and the phase transitions between different pairing states, and further demonstrate the existence of the long-sought topological superfluid state at moderate magnetic field and spin-orbit coupling strength. For the particle conserved system, this topological superfluid state can be fixed by its gapless single particle excitation, Luttinger parameter and non-trivial boundary effect. Our study removes out the widespread doubt on the existence of topological superfluid in one dimension and paves the way for simulating topological superfluid states in cold atom settings.

Cavity-Mediated Unconventional Pairing in Ultracold Fermionic Atoms

Frank Schlawin, Dieter Jaksch

We investigate long-range pairing interactions between ultracold fermionic atoms confined in an optical lattice which are mediated by the coupling to a cavity. In the absence of other perturbations, we find three degenerate pairing symmetries for a two-dimensional square lattice. By tuning a weak local atomic interaction via a Feshbach resonance or by tuning a weak magnetic field, the superfluid system can be driven from a topologically trivial s wave to topologically ordered, chiral superfluids containing Majorana edge states. Our work points out a novel path towards the creation of exotic superfluid states by exploiting the competition between long-range and short-range interactions.

Nonequilibrium topological phase transitions in two-dimensional optical lattices

Masaya Nakagawa, Norio Kawakami

Recently, concepts of topological phases of matter are extended to nonequilibrium systems, especially periodically driven systems. In this paper, we construct an example which shows nonequilibrium topological phase transitions using ultracold fermions in optical lattices. We show that the Rabi oscillation has the possibility to induce nonequilibrium topological phases which are classified into time-reversal-invariant topological insulators for a two-orbital model of alkaline-earth-metal atoms. Furthermore, we study the nonequilibrium topological phases using time-dependent Schrieffer--Wolff-type perturbation theory, and we obtain an analytical expression to describe the topological phase transitions from a high-frequency limit of external driving fields.

Effective Hamiltonian with tunable mixed pairing in driven optical lattices

Yu‐Biao Wu, Guang‐Can Guo, Zhen Zheng +1 more

Mixed pairing in ultracold Fermi gases can give rise to interesting many-body phases, such as topological nontrivial superfluids that support Majorana zero modes (MZMs) with various spatial configurations. Unfortunately, in ordinary lattice systems, the topological phase and the associated MZMs are suppressed by the dominant $s$-wave pairing. Here we present a proposal for engineering effective Hamiltonians with tunable mixed on- and off-site pairing based on driven optical lattices. The on- and off-site pairing can be changed independently by means of a periodical driving field rather than magnetic Feshbach resonances. It paves the way for suppressing the dominant on-site interaction that frustrates the emergence of topological superfluids and for synthesizing MZMs localized in edges or corners.

Phase diagram of a spin–orbit coupled Fermi gas in a bilayer optical lattice

Xiaosen Yang, Beibing Huang, Hai-Qing Lin

We investigate the stability of helical superfluid phase in a spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas loaded in a bilayer optical lattice. The phase diagram of the system is constructed in the mean field framework. We investigate the topological properties of the superfluid phases by a nontrivial application of the Fermi surface topological invariant to our time-reversal invariant system with degeneracies on the Fermi surface. We find that there is a first-order phase boundary in the phase diagram of half filling case and the superfluid phases are all topological trivial. The superfluid phase is topological nontrivial when the filling fraction deviates from the half filling. In the topological nontrivial superfluid phase, a full pairing gap exists in the bulk and gapless helical Majorana edge states exist at the boundary.
