Abstract

Based on density matrix renormalization group method, we investigate the spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas with attractive interactions in one-dimensional optical lattice and present a complete phase diagram for a quarter-filling system with intermediate strong interactions. We unveil the exotic pairings induced by spin-orbit couplings and the phase transitions between different pairing states, and further demonstrate the existence of the long-sought topological superfluid state at moderate magnetic field and spin-orbit coupling strength. For the particle conserved system, this topological superfluid state can be fixed by its gapless single particle excitation, Luttinger parameter and non-trivial boundary effect. Our study removes out the widespread doubt on the existence of topological superfluid in one dimension and paves the way for simulating topological superfluid states in cold atom settings.

Phase diagram of a spin–orbit coupled Fermi gas in a bilayer optical lattice

Xiaosen Yang, Beibing Huang, Hai-Qing Lin

We investigate the stability of helical superfluid phase in a spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas loaded in a bilayer optical lattice. The phase diagram of the system is constructed in the mean field framework. We investigate the topological properties of the superfluid phases by a nontrivial application of the Fermi surface topological invariant to our time-reversal invariant system with degeneracies on the Fermi surface. We find that there is a first-order phase boundary in the phase diagram of half filling case and the superfluid phases are all topological trivial. The superfluid phase is topological nontrivial when the filling fraction deviates from the half filling. In the topological nontrivial superfluid phase, a full pairing gap exists in the bulk and gapless helical Majorana edge states exist at the boundary.

Spin-orbit coupling induced unconventional pairings in a one-dimensional lattice

J.-Q. Liang, Xiaofan Zhou, Pak Hong Chui +5 more

Pairings are the heart for exploring novel superfluid physics of degenerate fermi gases. In the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), some exotic pairings, including the triplet $p$-wave pairing, have been predicted, which paves a new way to search topological superfluids and associated Majorana fermions. In this work, we reveal unconventional pairings induced by SOC in a one-dimensional optical lattice, using the exact density-matrix renormalization group. In the weak SOC, we find the interband Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) and intraband Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairings may coexist, when both bands are partially occupied. This interesting coexistence can lead to a new quantum state, called the FFLO-BCS phase, which exhibits a unique three-peak structure in pairing momentum distribution. However, in the intermediate and strong SOCs, the intraband BCS pairing dominates in the whole parameter regime. These results shed great light on the realization of topological superfluids in the spin-orbit coupled lattice.

Unconventional pairings of spin-orbit coupled attractive degenerate Fermi gas in a one-dimensional optical lattice

Junjun Liang, Xiaofan Zhou, Pak Hong Chui +5 more

Understanding novel pairings in attractive degenerate Fermi gases is crucial for exploring rich superfluid physics. In this report, we reveal unconventional pairings induced by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in a one-dimensional optical lattice, using a state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group method. When both bands are partially occupied, we find a strong competition between the interband Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) and intraband Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairings. In particular, for the weak and moderate SOC strengths, these two pairings can coexist, giving rise to a new phase called the FFLO-BCS phase, which exhibits a unique three-peak structure in pairing momentum distribution. For the strong SOC strength, the intraband BCS pairing always dominates in the whole parameter regime, including the half filling. We figure out the whole phase diagrams as functions of filling factor, SOC strength, and Zeeman field. Our results are qualitatively different from recent mean-field predictions. Finally, we address that our predictions could be observed in a weaker trapped potential.

Numerical analysis of spin-orbit coupled one dimensional Fermi gas in the magnetic field

Yang‐Hao Chan

We use the density matrix renormalization group method(DMRG) and the infinite time evolved block decimation method(iTEBD) to investigate the ground states of the spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas in a one dimensional optical lattice with a transverse magnetic field. We discover that the system with attractive interaction can have a polarized insulator(PI), a superconducting phase(SC), a Luther-Emery(LE) phase and a band insulator(BI) phase as we vary the chemical potential and the strength of magnetic field. We find that spin-orbit coupling induces a triplet pairing order at zero momentum with the same critical exponent as that of the singlet pairing one in both the SC and the LE phase. In contrast to the FFLO phase found in the spin imbalanced system without spin-orbit coupling, pairings at finite momentum in these two phases have a larger exponent hence do not dictate the long range behavior. We also find good agreements of the dominant correlations between numerical results and the prediction from the bosonization method. The presence of Majorana fermions is tested. However, unlike results from the mean field study, we do not find positive evidence of Majorana fermions in our system.

SU(3) spin-orbit coupled fermions in an optical lattice

Xiaofan Zhou, Gang Chen, Suo-Tang Jia

We propose a scheme to realize the SU(3) spin–orbit coupled three-component fermions in an one-dimensional optical lattice. The topological properties of the single-particle Hamiltonian are studied by calculating the Berry phase, winding number and edge state. We also investigate the effects of the interaction on the ground-state topology of the system, and characterize the interaction-induced topological phase transitions, using a state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization-group numerical method. Finally, we show the typical features of the emerging quantum phases, and map out the many-body phase diagram between the interaction and the Zeeman field. Our results establish a way for exploring novel quantum physics induced by the SOC with SU(N) symmetry.

Topological superfluid phases of attractive Fermi-Hubbard model in narrow-band cold-atom optical lattices

Tudor D. Stanescu, Sumanta Tewari, V. W. Scarola

We investigate the effects of attractive Hubbard interaction on two-component fermionic atoms in narrow two-dimensional (2D) energy bands that exhibit Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the presence of an applied Zeeman field. This narrow-band 2D spin-orbit-coupled attractive Fermi-Hubbard model can potentially be realized in cold-atom systems in optical lattices with artificially engineered Rashba SOC and Zeeman field. Employing a self-consistent mean-field approximation for the pairing potential, we uncover a complex phase diagram featuring various topological superfluid (TS) phases, dependent on the chemical potential and the Zeeman field. We focus on the pairing potential and the corresponding quasiparticle gap characterizing the TS phases, which are notably small for a wide-band model with quadratic dispersion near the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ point, as found in earlier work. We identify the parameter regimes that maximize the gap. We find that, while generally the value of the pairing potential increases with the reduction of the fermionic bandwidth, as expected for narrow- or flat-band systems, the magnitude of the topological gap characterizing the TS phases reaches a significantly improved maximum of about $10--12.5%$ of the interaction strength at finite values of the hopping amplitude, Rashba coupling, and Zeeman field. Our work establishes a robust operating regime for experimenting with topological superfluids in cold-atom optical lattices.
