Abstract

Using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations we study the quantum phase diagram, thermodynamics, and criticality of one-dimensional (1D) spin-1 bosons with strongly repulsive density-density and antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interactions. We analytically derive a high-precision equation of state from which the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid physics and quantum critical behavior of the system are computed. We obtain explicit forms for the scaling functions near the critical points yielding the dynamical exponent $z=2$ and correlation length exponent $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$ for the quantum phase transitions driven by either the chemical potential or the magnetic field. Consequently, we further demonstrate that quantum criticality of the system can be mapped out from the finite temperature density and magnetization profiles of the 1D trapped gas. Our results provide the physical origin of quantum criticality in a 1D many-body system beyond the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid description.

Quantum criticality of spin-1 bosons in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

C. C. N. Kuhn, Xi-Wen Guan, Angela Foerster +1 more

We investigate universal thermodynamics and quantum criticality of spin-1 bosons with strongly repulsive density-density and antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interactions in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. From the equation of state, we find that a partially polarized core is surrounded by two wings composed of either spin-singlet pairs or a fully spin-aligned Tonks-Girardeau gas depending on the polarization. We describe how the scaling behavior of density profiles can reveal the universal nature of quantum criticality and map out the quantum phase diagram. We further show that at quantum criticality the dynamical critical exponent $z=2$ and correlation length exponent $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$. This reveals a subtle resemblance to the physics of the spin-1/2 attractive Fermi gas.

Magnetism of one-dimensional strongly repulsive spin-1 bosons with antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interaction

J. Y. Lee, Xin Guan, Murray T. Batchelor +1 more

We investigate magnetism and quantum phase transitions in a one-dimensional system of integrable spin-1 bosons with strongly repulsive density-density interaction and antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interaction via the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz method. At zero temperature, the system exhibits three quantum phases: (i) a singlet phase of boson pairs when the external magnetic field $H$ is less than the lower critical field ${H}_{c1}$; (ii) a ferromagnetic phase of atoms in the hyperfine state $|F=1,\text{ }{m}_{F}=1⟩$ when the external magnetic field exceeds the upper critical field ${H}_{c2}$; and (iii) a mixed phase of singlet pairs and unpaired atoms in the intermediate region ${H}_{c1}<H<{H}_{c2}$. At finite temperatures, the spin fluctuations affect the thermodynamics of the model through coupling the spin bound states to the dressed energy for the unpaired ${m}_{F}=1$ bosons. However, such spin dynamics is suppressed by a sufficiently strong external field at low temperatures. Thus the singlet pairs and unpaired bosons may form a two-component Luttinger liquid in the strong coupling regime.

Quantum criticality of spinons

Feng He, Yuzhu Jiang, Yi-Cong Yu +2 more

Magnon bound states emerging in one-dimensional (1D) spin chains still lack a rigorous understanding. In this Rapid Communication we show that the length-1 spin strings significantly dominate the critical properties of spinons, magnons, and free fermions in the 1D antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain. Using the Bethe ansatz solution, we analytically calculate the scaling functions of the thermal and magnetic properties of the model, providing a rigorous understanding of the quantum criticality of spinons. It turns out that the double maxima in specific heat elegantly mark two crossover temperatures fanning out from the critical point, indicating three quantum phases: the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL), the quantum critical, and fully polarized ferromagnetic phases. For the TLL phase, the Wilson ratio ${R}_{W}=4{K}_{s}$ remains almost temperature independent, where ${K}_{s}$ is the Luttinger parameter. Furthermore, by applying our results, we precisely determine the quantum scalings and critical exponents of all magnetic properties in the ideal 1D spin-1/2 antiferromagnet $\mathrm{Cu}(\mathrm{C}{}_{4}\mathrm{H}{}_{4}\mathrm{N}{}_{2})(\mathrm{NO}{}_{3}){}_{2}$, recently studied by Kono et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 037202 (2015)]. We further find that the magnetization maximum used in experiments is not a good quantity to map out the finite-temperature TLL phase boundary.

Exact results of one-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model

Jiajia Luo, Han Pu, Xi‐Wen Guan

We present analytical results of fundamental properties of one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model with a repulsive interaction, ranging from fractional excitations to universal thermodynamics, interaction-driven criticality, correlation functions, Contact susceptibilities and quantum cooling. Using the exact solutions of the Bethe Ansatz equations of the Hubbard model, we first rigorously calculate the gapless spin and charge excitations, exhibiting exotic features of fractionalized spinons and holons. Based on the analysis on the fractional charge and spin excitations, the spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid with only the charge propagation mode is elucidated by the asymptotic of the two-point correlation functions with the help of the conformal field theory. Near quadruple critical point, we then further analytically obtain the thermodynamical properties, dimensionless ratios and scaling functions near quantum phase transitions in terms of chemical potential, magnetic field and interaction. In particular, we determine additivity rules of spin and charge susceptibilities, and derive explicit forms of thermodynamics of spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid. Finally, in order to capture deeper insight into the Mott insulator and interaction driven criticality, we further study the double occupancy and its associated Contact and Contact susceptibilities through which an adiabatic cooling scheme upon the quantum criticality is introduced.

Universal low-energy physics in 1D strongly repulsive multi-component Fermi gases

Yuzhu Jiang, Peng He, Xi‐Wen Guan

Abstract It has been shown (Yang and You 2011 Chin. Phys. Lett. 28 020503 ) that at zero temperature the ground state of the one-dimensional (1D) w -component Fermi gas coincides with that of the spinless Bose gas in the limit . This behavior was experimentally evidenced through quasi-1D tightly trapping ultracold 173 Yb atoms in a recent paper (Pagano et al 2014 Nat. Phys. 10 198 ). However, understanding of low-temperature behavior of Fermi gases with a repulsive interaction requires spin-charge separated conformal field theories of an effective Tomonaga–Luttinger liquid and an antiferromagnetic SU ( w ) Heisenberg spin chain. Here we analytically derive universal thermodynamics of 1D strongly repulsive fermionic gases with SU ( w ) symmetry via the Yang–Yang thermodynamic Bethe ansatz method. The analytical free energy and magnetic properties of the systems at low temperature in a weak magnetic field are obtained through the Wiener–Hopf method. In particular, the free energy essentially manifests the spin-charge separated conformal field theories for high-symmetry systems with arbitrary repulsive interaction strength. We also find that the sound velocity of the Fermi gases in the large w limit coincides with that for the spinless Bose gas, whereas the spin velocity vanishes quickly as w becomes large. This indicates strong suppression of the Fermi exclusion statistics by the commutativity feature among the w -component fermions with different spin states in the Tomonaga–Luttinger liquid phase. Moreover, the equations of state and critical behavior of physical quantities at finite temperature are analytically derived in terms of the polylogarithm functions in the quantum critical region.

Quantum criticality of one-dimensional multicomponent Fermi gas with strongly attractive interaction

Peng He, Yuzhu Jiang, Xi‐Wen Guan +1 more

Quantum criticality of strongly attractive Fermi gas with $SU(3)$ symmetry in one dimension is studied via the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations. The phase transitions driven by the chemical potential $μ$, effective magnetic field $H_1$, $H_2$ (chemical potential biases) are analyzed at the quantum criticality. The phase diagram and critical fields are analytically determined by the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations in zero temperature limit. High accurate equations of state, scaling functions are also obtained analytically for the strong interacting gases. The dynamic exponent $z=2$ and correlation length exponent $ν=1/2$ read off the universal scaling form. It turns out that the quantum criticality of the three-component gases involves a sudden change of density of states of one cluster state, two or three cluster states. In general, this method can be adapted to deal with the quantum criticality of multi-component Fermi gases with $SU(N)$ symmetry.
