Abstract

Abstract It has been shown (Yang and You 2011 Chin. Phys. Lett. 28 020503 ) that at zero temperature the ground state of the one-dimensional (1D) w -component Fermi gas coincides with that of the spinless Bose gas in the limit . This behavior was experimentally evidenced through quasi-1D tightly trapping ultracold 173 Yb atoms in a recent paper (Pagano et al 2014 Nat. Phys. 10 198 ). However, understanding of low-temperature behavior of Fermi gases with a repulsive interaction requires spin-charge separated conformal field theories of an effective Tomonaga–Luttinger liquid and an antiferromagnetic SU ( w ) Heisenberg spin chain. Here we analytically derive universal thermodynamics of 1D strongly repulsive fermionic gases with SU ( w ) symmetry via the Yang–Yang thermodynamic Bethe ansatz method. The analytical free energy and magnetic properties of the systems at low temperature in a weak magnetic field are obtained through the Wiener–Hopf method. In particular, the free energy essentially manifests the spin-charge separated conformal field theories for high-symmetry systems with arbitrary repulsive interaction strength. We also find that the sound velocity of the Fermi gases in the large w limit coincides with that for the spinless Bose gas, whereas the spin velocity vanishes quickly as w becomes large. This indicates strong suppression of the Fermi exclusion statistics by the commutativity feature among the w -component fermions with different spin states in the Tomonaga–Luttinger liquid phase. Moreover, the equations of state and critical behavior of physical quantities at finite temperature are analytically derived in terms of the polylogarithm functions in the quantum critical region.

Thermodynamics and spin-charge separation of one-dimensional strongly repulsive three-component fermions

The low temperature thermodynamics of one-dimensional strongly repulsive SU(3) fermions in the presence of a magnetic field is investigated via the Yang-Yang thermodynamic Bethe ansatz method. The analytical free energy and magnetic properties of the model at low temperatures in a weak magnetic field are derived via the Wiener-Hopf method. It is shown that the low energy physics can be described by spin-charge separated conformal field theories of an effective Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and an antiferromagnetic SU(3) Heisenberg spin chain. Beyond the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid regime, the equation of state is given in terms of the polylog function for a weak external field. The results obtained are essential for further study of quantum criticality in strongly repulsive three-component fermions.

Thermodynamics, spin-charge separation, and correlation functions of spin- 1/2 fermions with repulsive interaction

J. Y. Lee, Xin Guan, Kazumitsu Sakai +1 more

We investigate the low-temperature thermodynamics and correlation functions of one-dimensional spin-1/2 fermions with strong repulsion in an external magnetic field via the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz method. The exact thermodynamics of the model in a weak magnetic field is derived with the help of Wiener-Hopf techniques. It turns out that the low-energy physics can be described by spin-charge separated conformal field theories of an effective Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and an antiferromagnetic $\text{SU}(2)$ Heisenberg spin chain. However, these two types of conformally invariant low-lying excitations may break down as excitations take place far away from the Fermi points. The long distance asymptotics of the correlation functions and the critical exponents for the model in the presence of a magnetic field at zero temperature are derived in detail by solving dressed charge equations and by conformal mapping. Furthermore, we calculate the conformal dimensions for particular cases of correlation functions. The leading terms of these correlation functions are given explicitly for a weak magnetic field $H\ensuremath{\ll}1$ and for a magnetic field close to the critical field $H\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{H}_{c}$. Our analytical results provide insights into universal thermodynamics and criticality in one-dimensional many-body physics.

Emergence and Disruption of Spin-Charge Separation in One-Dimensional Repulsive Fermions

Feng He, Yuzhu Jiang, Hai‐Qing Lin +3 more

At low temperature, collective excitations of one-dimensional (1D) interacting fermions exhibit spin-charge separation, a unique feature predicted by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) theory, but a rigorous understanding remains challenging. Using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) formalism, we analytically derive universal properties of a 1D repulsive spin-1/2 Fermi gas with arbitrary interaction strength. We show how spin-charge separation emerges from the exact TBA formalism, and how it is disrupted by the interplay between the two degrees of freedom that brings us beyond the TLL paradigm. Based on the exact low-lying excitation spectra, we further evaluate the spin and charge dynamical structure factors (DSFs). The peaks of the DSFs exhibit distinguishable propagating velocities of spin and charge as functions of interaction strength, which can be observed by Bragg spectroscopy with ultracold atoms.

Analytical thermodynamics of a strongly attractive three-component Fermi gas in one dimension

Peng He, Xiangguo Yin, Xi‐Wen Guan +2 more

Ultracold three-component atomic Fermi gases in one dimension are expected to exhibit rich physics due to the presence of trions and different pairing states. Quantum phase transitions from the trion state into a paired phase and a normal Fermi liquid occur at zero temperature. We derive the analytical thermodynamics of strongly attractive three-component one-dimensional fermions with SU(3) symmetry via the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz method in unequal Zeeman splitting fields ${H}_{1}$ and ${H}_{2}$. We find explicitly that for low temperature the system acts like either a two-component or a three-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid dependent on the system parameters. The phase diagrams for the chemical potential and specific heat are presented for illustrative values of the Zeeman splitting. We also demonstrate that crossover between different Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid phases exhibit singular behavior in specific heat and entropy as the temperature tends to zero. Beyond Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid physics, we obtain the equation of state which provides a precise description of universal thermodynamics and quantum criticality in three-component, strongly attractive Fermi gases.

Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory for one-dimensional attractive Fermi gases

Anonymous, Yu-Hao Yeh, Aashish Kafle +4 more

The one-dimensional (1D) Yang-Gaudin model--an integrable $δ$-function interacting Fermi gas, serves as a paradigm in quantum many-body physics, encompassing phenomena from spin-charge separation to the Luther-Emery liquid. However, a consistent description of the Luther-Emery liquid and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-like pairing states in the 1D attractive Fermi gas remains elusive. In this work, we develop a universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) theory to describe the FFLO state both for the case of weak and strong binding between fermions of opposite spins. We rigorously derive a low-energy effective Hamiltonian using bosonization, revealing the emergence of a two-component TLL: one exhibiting spin-charge coupling in the weak binding regime, and another featuring charge-charge separation in the strong binding regime. For the weak binding regime, we further derive renormalization-group equations for the sine-Gordon term in the spin sector and show that this term undergoes a relevant-irrelevant phase transition driven by the magnetic field. We further analyze the dynamical correlation functions of the FFLO pairing state based on the effective Hamiltonian we constructed. Finally, we discuss experiments using ultracold atoms to elucidate the Luther-Emery liquid behavior and the subtle phenomena of spin-charge coupling and charge-charge separation.

Universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phases in one-dimensional strongly attractive SU (N) fermionic cold atoms

Xin Guan, Jeong Yong Lee, Murray T. Batchelor +2 more

A simple set of algebraic equations is derived for the exact low-temperature thermodynamics of one-dimensional multicomponent strongly attractive fermionic atoms with enlarged SU$(N)$ spin symmetry and Zeeman splitting. Universal multicomponent Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phases are thus determined. For linear Zeeman splitting, the physics of the gapless phase at low temperatures belongs to the universality class of a two-component asymmetric TLL corresponding to spin-neutral $N$-atom composites and spin-$(N\ensuremath{-}1)/2$ single atoms. The equation of state which we obtained provides a precise description of multicomponent composite fermions and opens up the study of quantum criticality in one-dimensional systems of $N$-component Fermi gases with population imbalance.
