Abstract

Considering the adjacent spin operators $S^z_jS^z_{j+1}$ and $S^-_jS^-_{j+1}$ in the S=1/2 Heisenberg chain, we give a determinant representation of their form factors. The dynamical structure factors of the respective operators are computed over the whole Brillouin zone in several magnetic fields and the resulting signal is analyzed in terms of excitation types. Among other results, we find that the $S^z_jS^z_{j+1}$ dynamical structure factor carries a large weight of the 4-spinon excitations which are distinguishable from the 2-spinon signal because they are located outside the 2-spinon spectrum.

Comment on ‘Adjacent spin operator dynamical structure factor of theS= 1/2 Heisenberg chain’

Jan de Gier

We consider the paper 'Adjacent spin operator dynamical structure factor of the S = 1/2 Heisenberg chain', by Klauser, Mossel and Caux (2012 J. Stat. Mech. P03012) to be a new and important step in the numerical analysis of the correlation functions of quantum spin chains. The correlation functions considered in this paper were not previously computed, their analytical study is extremely complicated and the numerical results can be used for comparison with experiments.

Computation of Dynamical Correlation Functions of Heisenberg Chains in a Magnetic Field

Jean-Sébastien Caux, Jean Michel Maillet

We compute the momentum- and frequency-dependent longitudinal spin structure factor for the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg spin chain in a magnetic field, using exact determinant representations for form factors on the lattice. Multiparticle (i.e., multispinon) contributions are computed numerically throughout the Brillouin zone, yielding saturation of the sum rule to high precision.

Spin-Exchange Dynamical Structure Factor of the S=1/2 Heisenberg Chain

Antoine Klauser, Jorn Mossel, Jean-Sébastien Caux +1 more

We determine the spin-exchange dynamical structure factor of the Heisenberg spin chain, as is measured by indirect resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). We find that two-spin RIXS excitations nearly entirely fractionalize into two-spinon states. These share the same continuum lower bound as single-spin neutron scattering excitations, even if the relevant final states belong to orthogonal symmetry sectors. The RIXS spectral weight is mainly carried by higher-energy excitations, and is beyond the reach of the low-energy effective theories of Luttinger liquid type.

Two-spinon dynamic structure factor of the one-dimensional s= Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Michael Karbach, Gerhard H. Muller, A. Hamid Bougourzi +2 more

The exact expression derived by Bougourzi, Couture, and Kacir for the two-spinon contribution to the dynamic spin structure factor S(q,\ensuremath{\omega}) of the one-dimensional s=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet at T=0 is evaluated for direct comparison with finite-chain transition rates (N\ensuremath{\leqslant}28) and an approximate analytical result previously inferred from finite-N data, sum rules, and Bethe ansatz calculations. The two-spinon excitations account for 72.89% of the total intensity in S(q,\ensuremath{\omega}). The singularity structure of the exact result is determined analytically and its spectral-weight distribution evaluated numerically over the entire range of the two-spinon continuum. The leading singularities of the frequency-dependent spin autocorrelation function, static spin structure factor, and q dependent susceptibility are determined via sum rules. The impact of the non-two-spinon excitations on the integrated intensity, the susceptibility, the frequency moments, and the Euclidian time representation of S(q,\ensuremath{\omega}) is studied on the basis of finite-size data.

The four-spinon dynamical structure factor of the Heisenberg chain

Jean-Sébastien Caux, Rob Hagemans

We compute the exact four-spinon contribution to the zero-temperature dynamical structure factor of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg isotropic antiferromagnet in zero magnetic field, directly in the thermodynamic limit. We make use of the expressions for matrix elements of local spin operators obtained by Jimbo and Miwa using the quantum affine symmetry of the model, and of their adaptation to the isotropic case by Abada, Bougourzi and Si-Lakhal (correcting some overall factors). The four-spinon contribution to the first frequency moment sum rule at fixed momentum is calculated. This shows, as expected, that most of the remaining correlation weight above the known two-spinon part is carried by four-spinon states. Our results therefore provide an extremely accurate description of the exact structure factor.

Dynamical Structure Factor of the J 1 − J 2 Heisenberg Model on the Triangular Lattice: Magnons, Spinons, and Gauge Fields

Francesco Ferrari, Federico Becca

Understanding the nature of the excitation spectrum in quantum spin liquids is of fundamental importance, in particular for the experimental detection of candidate materials. However, current theoretical and numerical techniques have limited capabilities, especially in obtaining the dynamical structure factor, which gives a crucial characterization of the ultimate nature of the quantum state and may be directly assessed by inelastic neutron scattering. In this work, we investigate the low-energy properties of the S ¼ 1=2 Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice, including both nearest-neighbor J 1 and next-nearestneighbor J 2 superexchanges, by a dynamical variational Monte Carlo approach that allows accurate results on spin models. For J 2 ¼ 0, our calculations are compatible with the existence of a well-defined magnon in the whole Brillouin zone, with gapless excitations at K points (i.e., at the corners of the Brillouin zone). The strong renormalization of the magnon branch (also including rotonlike minima around the M points, i.e., midpoints of the border zone) is described by our Gutzwiller-projected state, where Abrikosov fermions are subject to a nontrivial magnetic π flux threading half of the triangular plaquettes. When increasing the frustrating ratio J 2 =J 1 , we detect a progressive softening of the magnon branch at M, which eventually becomes gapless within the spin-liquid phase. This feature is captured by the band structure of the unprojected wave function (with two Dirac points for each spin component). In addition, we observe an intense signal at low energies around the K points, which cannot be understood within the unprojected picture and emerges only when the Gutzwiller projection is considered, suggesting the relevance of gauge fields for the low-energy physics of spin liquids.
