Abstract

By solving the three-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii equation, we generate two-dimensional axially symmetric and anisotropic dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate bright solitons for repulsive atomic interaction, stabilized by only a weak one-dimensional optical lattice (OL) aligned along and perpendicular, respectively, to the dipole polarization direction. In the former case, vortex solitons can also be created. We show that it is possible to make a stable array of small interacting axially symmetric dipolar solitons put on alternate OL sites. Further, we demonstrate the elastic nature of the collision of two such solitons.

Two-dimensional bright and dark-in-bright dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate solitons on a one-dimensional optical lattice

S K Adhikari

Abstract We study the statics and dynamics of anisotropic, stable, bright and dark-in-bright dipolar quasi-two-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) solitons on a one-dimensional (1D) optical-lattice (OL) potential. These solitons mobile in a plane perpendicular to a 1D OL trap can have both repulsive and attractive contact interactions. Dark-in-bright solitons are the excited states of bright solitons. The solitons, when subjected to a small perturbation, exhibit sustained breathing oscillation. Dark-in-bright solitons can be created by phase imprinting a bright soliton. At medium velocities the collision between two solitons is found to be quasi-elastic. Results are demonstrated by a numerical simulation of the three-dimensional mean-field Gross–Pitaevskii equation in three spatial dimensions employing realistic interaction parameters for a dipolar 164 Dy BEC.

Two-dimensional anisotropic vortex–bright soliton and its dynamics in dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates in optical lattice

Zhi Tan, Huilin Gong, Bo Zhu +2 more

Abstract We study construction and dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) anisotropic vortex-bright (VB) soliton in spinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a 2D optical lattice (OL), with two localized components linearly mixed by the spin-orbit coupling and long-range dipole-dipole interaction (DDI). It is found that the OL and DDI can support stable anisotropic VB soliton in the present setting for arbitrarily small value of norm N. We then present a new method via examining the mean square error of norm share of bright component to implement stability analysis. It is revealed that one can control the stability of anisotropic VB soliton only by adjusting OL depth for a fixed DDI. In addition, the dynamics of the anisotropic VB soliton was studied by applying the kick to them. The mobility of the single kicked VB solition is Rabbi-like oscillation. However, for the collision dynamics of two kicked anisotropic VB solitons, their properties mainly depend on their initial distance and OL, and they can realize the transition from the bright component to the vortex component. Our work may provides a convenient way to prepare and manipulate anisotropic VB soliton in high dimensional space.

Dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional bright and vortex solitons of a dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate with repulsive atomic interaction

Luis E. Young-S., Paulsamy Muruganandam, Sadhan K. Adhikari

By numerical and variational analysis of the three-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii equation, we study the formation and dynamics of bright and vortex-bright solitons in a cigar-shaped dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate for large repulsive atomic interactions. A phase diagram showing the region of stability of the solitons is obtained. We also study the dynamics of breathing oscillation of the solitons as well as the collision dynamics of two solitons. At large velocities the frontal collision is elastic and the two three-dimensional solitons pass through each other undeformed. Two solitons placed side by side at rest coalesce to form a stable bound soliton molecule due to dipolar attraction. Movie clips illustrating collision and molecule-formation dynamics of two bright and vortex-bright solitons are included.

Bright dipolar Bose-Einstein-condensate soliton mobile in a direction perpendicular to polarization

Sadhan K. Adhikari

We demonstrate stable, robust, bright one-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein-condensate (BEC) solitons, moving in a direction perpendicular to the polarization direction, formed due to dipolar interaction for repulsive contact interaction. At medium velocity the head on collision of two such solitons is found to be quasielastic with practically no deformation. Upon small perturbation the solitons are found to exhibit sustained breathing oscillation. The findings are illustrated by numerical simulation using the three-dimensional mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation and a reduced two-dimensional model in three and two spatial dimensions employing realistic interaction parameters for a dipolar $^{164}\mathrm{Dy}$ BEC.

Discrete vortex solitons in dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates

Goran Gligorić, Aleksandra Maluckov, Milutin Stepić +2 more

We analyse the existence, stability and dynamics of localized discrete modes with intrinsic vorticity S = 1 and S = 2 in the disc-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into a deep two-dimensional optical lattice. The condensate, which features the interplay of local contact and nonlocal dipole-dipole (DD) interactions between atoms, is modelled by the 2D discrete Gross-Pitaevskii equation which includes the long-range DD term. Various species of discrete vortex solitons, which are known in the model of the condensate with local interactions, are found to exist in the presence of the DD interaction too. In locally self-attractive condensates, the isotropic DD repulsion, which corresponds to the orientation of atomic dipoles perpendicular to the confinement plane, helps to extend the region of the vortex stability, while in the case of anisotropic DD interactions, corresponding to the in-plane orientation of the dipoles, vortices are unstable. In the former case, those vortices which are unstable may evolve into robust ring-shaped breathers. The attractive isotropic DD interaction can create localized vortices in the condensate with the local self-repulsion, but they all are unstable, evolving into single-peak asymmetric structures.

Solitons in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with competing dipolar and local interactions

Jesús Cuevas–Maraver, Boris A. Malomed, P. G. Kevrekidis +1 more

We study families of one-dimensional matter-wave bright solitons supported by the competition of contact and dipole-dipole (DD) interactions of opposite signs. Soliton families are found, and their stability is investigated in the free space and in the presence of an optical lattice (OL). Free-space solitons may exist with an arbitrarily weak local attraction if the strength of the DD repulsion is fixed. In the case of the DD attraction, solitons do not exist beyond a maximum value of the local-repulsion strength. In the system which includes the OL, a stability region for subfundamental solitons is found in the second finite band gap. For the existence of gap solitons (GSs) under the attractive DD interaction, the contact repulsion must be strong enough. In the opposite case of the DD repulsion, GSs exist if the contact attraction is not too strong. Collisions between solitons in the free space are studied too. In the case of the local attraction, they merge or pass through each other at small and large velocities, respectively. In the presence of the local repulsion, slowly moving solitons bounce from each other.
