Abstract

In this paper we study the error in the approximate simultaneous controllability of the bilinear Schrodinger equation. We provide estimates based on a tracking algorithm for general bilinear quantum systems and on the study of the finite dimensional Galerkin approximations for a particular class of quantum systems, weakly-coupled systems. We then present two physical examples: the perturbed quantum harmonic oscillator and the infinite potential well.

A Sufficient Condition for Partial Ensemble Controllability of Bilinear Schrödinger Equations with Bounded Coupling Terms

Thomas Chambrion

This note presents a sufficient condition for partial approximate ensemble controllability of a set of bilinear conservative quantum systems in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space. The proof relies on classical geometric and averaging control techniques applied on finite dimensional approximation of the infinite dimensional system. The results are illustrated with the planar rotation of a linear molecule.

Finite Controllability of Infinite-Dimensional Quantum Systems

Anthony M. Bloch, Roger W. Brockett, Chitra Rangan

Quantum phenomena of interest in connection with applications to computation and communication often involve generating specific transfers between eigenstates, and their linear superpositions. For some quantum systems, such as spin systems, the quantum evolution equation (the Schrödinger equation) is finite-dimensional and old results on controllability of systems defined on on Lie groups and quotient spaces provide most of what is needed insofar as controllability of non-dissipative systems is concerned. However, in an infinite-dimensional setting, controlling the evolution of quantum systems often presents difficulties, both conceptual and technical. In this paper we present a systematic approach to a class of such problems for which it is possible to avoid some of the technical issues. In particular, we analyze controllability for infinite-dimensional bilinear systems under assumptions that make controllability possible using trajectories lying in a nested family of pre-defined subspaces. This result, which we call the Finite Controllability Theorem, provides a set of sufficient conditions for controllability in an infinite-dimensional setting. We consider specific physical systems that are of interest for quantum computing, and provide insights into the types of quantum operations (gates) that may be developed.

Error bounds on finite-dimensional approximations of input-output open quantum systems

Onvaree Techakesari, Hendra I. Nurdin

Many physical systems of interest that are encountered in practice are input-output open quantum systems described by quantum stochastic differential equations and defined on an infinite-dimensional underlying Hilbert space. Most commonly, these systems involve coupling to a quantum harmonic oscillator as a system component. This paper is concerned with the error in the finite-dimensional approximation of input-output open quantum systems defined on an infinite-dimensional underlying Hilbert space. We present explicit error bounds between the time evolution of the state of a class of infinite-dimensional quantum systems and its approximation on a finite-dimensional subspace of the original, when both are initialized in the latter subspace. Application to a physical example drawn from the literature is provided to illustrate our results.

Global Approximate Controllability of Quantum Systems by Form Perturbations and Applications

Aitor Balmaseda, Davide Lonigro, Juan Manuel Pérez-Pardo

Abstract. We provide sufficient conditions for the approximate controllability of infinite-dimensional quantum control systems corresponding to form perturbations of the drift Hamiltonian modulated by a control function. We rely on previous results on controllability of quantum bilinear control systems and obtain a priori [Formula: see text]-bounds of the controls for generic initial and target states. We apply a stability result for the nonautonomous Schrödinger equation to extend the results to systems defined by form perturbations, including singular perturbations. As an application of our results, we prove approximate controllability of a quantum particle in a one-dimensional box with a point-interaction with tuneable strength at the center of the box.

WHAT CAN WE HOPE ABOUT OUTPUT TRACKING OF BILINEAR QUANTUM SYSTEMS?

Ugo Boscain, Thomas Chambrion, Mario Sigalotti +1 more

We consider a non-resonant bilinear Schrödinger equation with discrete spectrum driven by a scalar control. We prove that this system can approximately track any given trajectory, up to the phase of the coordinates, with arbitrary small controls. The result is valid both for bounded and unbounded Schrödinger operators. The method used relies on finite-dimensional control techniques applied to Lie groups.
