Abstract

We consider a non-resonant bilinear Schrödinger equation with discrete spectrum driven by a scalar control. We prove that this system can approximately track any given trajectory, up to the phase of the coordinates, with arbitrary small controls. The result is valid both for bounded and unbounded Schrödinger operators. The method used relies on finite-dimensional control techniques applied to Lie groups.

On the problem of quantum control in infinite dimensions

R. Vilela Mendes, Vladimir I. Man’ko

In the framework of bilinear control of the Schrödinger equation with bounded control operators, it has been proved that the reachable set has a dense complemement in ${\cal S}\cap {\cal H}^{2}$. Hence, in this setting, exact quantum control in infinite dimensions is not possible. On the other hand it is known that there is a simple choice of operators which, when applied to an arbitrary state, generate dense orbits in Hilbert space. Compatibility of these two results is established in this paper and, in particular, it is proved that the closure of the reachable set of bilinear control by bounded operators is dense in ${\cal S}\cap {\cal H}^{2}$. The requirements for controllability in infinite dimensions are also related to the properties of the infinite dimensional unitary group.

Quantum control in infinite dimensions and Banach-Lie algebras

Michael Keyl

In finite dimensions, controllability of bilinear quantum control systems can be decided quite easily in terms of the "Lie algebra rank condition" (LARC), such that only the systems Lie algebra has to be determined from a set of generators. In this paper we study how this idea can be lifted to infinite dimensions. To this end we look at control systems on an infinite dimensional Hilbert space which are given by an unbounded drift Hamiltonian H0and bounded control Hamiltonians H1,...,HN. The drift H0is assumed to have empty continuous spectrum. We use recurrence methods and the theory of Abelian von Neumann algebras to develop a scheme, which allows us to use an approximate version of LARC, in order to check approximate controllability of the control sysPtem in question.

Global Approximate Controllability of Quantum Systems by Form Perturbations and Applications

Aitor Balmaseda, Davide Lonigro, Juan Manuel Pérez-Pardo

Abstract. We provide sufficient conditions for the approximate controllability of infinite-dimensional quantum control systems corresponding to form perturbations of the drift Hamiltonian modulated by a control function. We rely on previous results on controllability of quantum bilinear control systems and obtain a priori [Formula: see text]-bounds of the controls for generic initial and target states. We apply a stability result for the nonautonomous Schrödinger equation to extend the results to systems defined by form perturbations, including singular perturbations. As an application of our results, we prove approximate controllability of a quantum particle in a one-dimensional box with a point-interaction with tuneable strength at the center of the box.

A Sufficient Condition for Partial Ensemble Controllability of Bilinear Schrödinger Equations with Bounded Coupling Terms

Thomas Chambrion

This note presents a sufficient condition for partial approximate ensemble controllability of a set of bilinear conservative quantum systems in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space. The proof relies on classical geometric and averaging control techniques applied on finite dimensional approximation of the infinite dimensional system. The results are illustrated with the planar rotation of a linear molecule.

Control and filtering of quantum systems

Shizhou Fu

This thesis is concerned with the control and filtering problems for quantum systems. Two kinds of control problems are considered for a class of quantum systems: optimal control and trajectory tracking control. Filtering of a class of linear quantum systems is also investigated. \n \nFor the optimal control of quantum systems, the system in question evolves on a manifold inR^3 and is modeled as a bilinear control form whose states are represented as coherence vectors. An associated matrix Lie group system with state space S O(3) is introduced in order to facilitate solving the given problem. The controllability as well as the reachable set of the system is analyzed in detail. The maximum principle is applied to the optimal control for systems evolving on the Lie group of special orthogonal matrices of dimension 3, with cost that is quadratic in the control input. Controlling the evolutions of coherence vector is equivalent to controlling the states of an associated matrix Lie group system. Thus, the optimal control problem for single spin-1/2 systems can be transformed to steer state of the matrix Lie group system from the identity matrix to a final matrix corresponding to a target state of single spin-1/2 systems in an optimal fashion. The obtained result is employed to perform a reversible logic quantum operation NOT on single spin-1/2 systems. Explicit expressions for the optimal control are given which are linked to the initial state of the system. The main contribution of the result is to extend the existing result to a larger class of systems, generalizing existing wave-function-based results to single spin-1/2 systems whose states are represented by density matrices such that it allows the inclusion of mixed states. \n \nFor the tracking control problem of closed single spin-1/2 quantum ensembles, based on the Liouville-von Neumann equation, mathematical model of dynamics for single spin-1/2 quantum ensembles are formulated as a bilinear form with states evolving on Bloch sphere. For a typical setting in NMR, one in general would not cancel the applied electromagnetic field along a specified direction, thus leading to the dynamics in a plane perpendicular to that direction on the Bloch sphere. One natural question arises that how can one design a feedback controller such that given an initial condition for quantum ensembles, the system evolutions can be steered to the pre-determined trajectory. An associated matrix Lie group differential equation describing transfers from the initial state being an identity matrix is naturally introduced. The tracking problem for the system of interest is transformed to a stabilization problem such that the control techniques are able to be used. A distance function as well as a distance vector defined on the Lie group SO(3) are introduced, which can be used to construct a Lyapunov function to deal with the tracking problem. In order to deal with the tracking problem, the Lyapunov-based feedback design method is employed to obtain the feedback control such that the dynamics of system can converge to the reference trajectory. \n \nFor filtering of quantum systems, the filter problem of a class of linear quantum stochastic systems with quantum noise is investigated. The quantum system model is first analyzed, then the necessary conditions of nondemolition are obtained by applying the observation principle. The relations between the input and output noise are necessary for the nondemolition measurement of the quantum output channels. Given prescribed quantum system, the filter of the system is derived using those necessary conditions.

Implementation of logical gates on infinite dimensional quantum oscillators

Nabile Boussaïd, Marco Caponigro, Thomas Chambrion

In this paper we study the error in the approximate simultaneous controllability of the bilinear Schrodinger equation. We provide estimates based on a tracking algorithm for general bilinear quantum systems and on the study of the finite dimensional Galerkin approximations for a particular class of quantum systems, weakly-coupled systems. We then present two physical examples: the perturbed quantum harmonic oscillator and the infinite potential well.
