Abstract

The energy and entanglement spectrum of fractionally filled interacting topological insulators exhibit a peculiar manifold of low-energy states separated by a gap from a high-energy set of spurious states. In the current paper, we show that in the case of fractionally filled Chern insulators, the topological information of the many-body state developing in the system resides in this low-energy manifold. We identify an emergent many-body translational symmetry which allows us to separate the states in quasidegenerate center-of-mass momentum sectors. Within one center-of-mass sector, the states can be further classified as eigenstates of an emergent (in the thermodynamic limit) set of many-body relative translation operators. We analytically establish a mapping between the two-dimensional Brillouin zone for the fractional quantum Hall effect on the torus and the one for the fractional Chern insulator. We show that the counting of quasidegenerate levels below the gap for the fractional Chern insulator should arise from a folding of the states in the fractional quantum Hall system at an identical filling factor. We show how to count and separate the excitations of the Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Read-Rezayi series in the fractional quantum Hall effect into two-dimensional Brillouin zone momentum sectors and then how to map these into the momentum sectors of the fractional Chern insulator. We numerically check our results by showing the emergent symmetry at work for Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Read-Rezayi states on the checkerboard model of a Chern insulator, thereby also showing, as a proof of principle, that non-Abelian fractional Chern insulators exist.

Fractional Chern Insulator

Nicolas Regnault, Bogdan Andrei Bernevig

Chern insulators are band insulators exhibiting a nonzero Hall conductance but preserving the lattice translational symmetry. We conclusively show that a partially filled Chern insulator at 1/3 filling exhibits a fractional quantum Hall effect and rule out charge-density wave states that have not been ruled out by previous studies. By diagonalizing the Hubbard interaction in the flat-band limit of these insulators, we show the following: The system is incompressible and has a 3-fold degenerate ground state whose momenta can be computed by postulating an generalized Pauli principle with no more than 1 particle in 3 consecutive orbitals. The ground state density is constant, and equal to 1/3 in momentum space. Excitations of the system are fractional statistics particles whose total counting matches that of quasiholes in the Laughlin state based on the same generalized Pauli principle. The entanglement spectrum of the state has a clear entanglement gap which seems to remain finite in the thermodynamic limit. The levels below the gap exhibit counting identical to that of Laughlin 1/3 quasiholes. Both the 3 ground states and excited states exhibit spectral flow upon flux insertion. All the properties above disappear in the trivial state of the insulator - both the many-body energy gap and the entanglement gap close at the phase transition when the single-particle Hamiltonian goes from topologically nontrivial to topologically trivial. These facts clearly show that fractional many-body states are possible in topological insulators.

Thin-Torus Limit of Fractional Topological Insulators

Bogdan Andrei Bernevig, Nicolas Regnault

We analytically and numerically analyze the one-dimensional "thin-torus" limit of Fractional Topological Insulators in a series of simple models exhibiting exactly flat bands with local hopping. These models are the one-dimensional limit of two dimensional Chern Insulators, and the Hubbard-type interactions projected into their lowest band take particularly simple forms. By exactly solving the many-body interacting spectrum of these models, we show that, just like in the Fractional Quantum Hall effect, the zero modes of the thin-torus limit are CDW states of occupation numbers satisfying generalized Pauli principles. As opposed to the FQH where the thin-torus CDW appear in orbital space, in the thin-torus FCI states, the CDW states are in real-space. We show the counting of the quasihole excitations in the energy spectrum cannot distinguish between a CDW state and a FQH state. However, by exactly computing the entanglement spectrum for the thin-torus states, we show that it can qualitatively and quantitatively distinguish between a CDW and a fractional topological state such as the FCI. We then discover a previously unknown separation of energy scales of the full FQH energy spectrum in the thin torus limit and find that Chern insulator models exhibiting strong isotropic FCI states have a similar structure in their thin-torus limit spectrum. We close by numerically computing the evolution of energy and entanglement spectra from the thin-torus to the isotropic limit. Our results can also be interpreted as an analysis of one-body, 1-dimensional topological insulators stabilized by inversion symmetry in the presence of interactions.

Non-Abelian fractional Chern insulators from long-range interactions

Zhao Liu, Emil J. Bergholtz, Eliot Kapit

The recent theoretical discovery of fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) has provided an important new way to realize topologically ordered states in lattice models. In earlier works, on-site and nearest-neighbor Hubbard-like interactions have been used extensively to stabilize Abelian FCIs in systems with nearly flat, topologically nontrivial bands. However, attempts to use two-body interactions to stabilize non-Abelian FCIs, where the ground state in the presence of impurities can be massively degenerate and manipulated through anyon braiding, have proven very difficult in uniform lattice systems. Here, we study the remarkable effect of long-range interactions in a lattice model that possesses an exactly flat lowest band with a unit Chern number. When spinless bosons with two-body long-range interactions partially fill the lowest Chern band, we find convincing evidence of gapped, bosonic Read-Rezayi (RR) phases with non-Abelian anyon statistics. We characterize these states through studying topological degeneracies, the overlap between the ground states of two-body interactions and the exact RR ground states of three- and four-body interactions, and state counting in the particle-cut entanglement spectrum. Moreover, we demonstrate how an approximate lattice form of Haldane's pseudopotentials, analogous to that in the continuum, can be used as an efficient guiding principle in the search for lattice models with stable non-Abelian phases.

Topological Entanglement in Abelian and Non-Abelian Excitation Eigenstates

Zlatko Papić, Bogdan Andrei Bernevig, Nicolas Regnault

Entanglement in topological phases of matter has so far been investigated through the perspective of their ground-state wave functions. In contrast, we demonstrate that the excitations of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems also contain information to identify the system's topological order. Entanglement spectrum of the FQH quasihole (QH) excitations is shown to differentiate between the conformal field theory (CFT) sectors, based on the relative position of the QH with respect to the entanglement cut. For Read-Rezayi model states, as well as Coulomb interaction eigenstates, the counting of the QH entanglement levels in the thermodynamic limit matches exactly the CFT counting, and sector changes occur as non-Abelian quasiholes successively cross the entanglement cut.

Fractional Chern insulator candidate on a twisted bilayer checkerboard lattice

Jia-Zheng Ma, Rui-Zhen Huang, Guoyi Zhu +2 more

We investigate a fractional Chern insulator (FCI) candidate arising from moir\'e bands with higher Chern number $C=2$ on a magic-angle twisted bilayer checkerboard lattice (MATBCB). There are two nearly flat low lying bands in the single-particle energy spectrum under the first magic angle $\ensuremath{\phi}\ensuremath{\approx}1.{608}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ and chiral limit. We find that MATBCB hosts a nearly uniform Berry curvature distribution and exhibits tiny violation of quantum geometric trace condition in the first moir\'e Brillouin zone (mBZ), indicating that there is a nearly ideal quantum geometry in MATBCB in single-particle level. Turning on projected Coulomb interactions, we perform exact diagonalization and find a 10-fold ground-state quasidegeneracy in many-body energy spectrum with filling fraction $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/5$. The 10-fold quasidegenerate ground states further show spectra flow under flux pumping. By diagnosing the particle entanglement spectrum (PES) of the ground states, we obtain a clear PES gap and quasihole state counting consistent with Halperin spin singlet generalized Pauli principle, suggesting that a $C=2$ Abelian fractional Chern insulator is realized in this system.

Zoology of fractional Chern insulators

Yang-Le Wu, Bogdan Andrei Bernevig, Nicolas Regnault

We study four different models of Chern insulators in the presence of strong electronic repulsion at partial fillings. We observe that all cases exhibit a Laughlin-like phase at filling fraction $1/3$. We provide evidence of such a strongly correlated topological phase by studying both the energy and the entanglement spectra. In order to identify the key ingredients of the emergence of Laughlin physics in these systems, we show how they are affected when tuning the band structure. We also address the question of the relevance of the Berry curvature flatness in this problem. Using three-body interactions, we show that some models can also host a topological phase reminiscent of the $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$ Pfaffian Moore-Read state. Additionally, we identify the structures indicating cluster correlations in the entanglement spectra.
