Abstract

The interacting atom-molecule BEC (AMBEC) dynamics is investigated in the mean field ap- proach. The presence of atom-atom, atom-molecule and molecule-molecule interactions, coupled with a characteristically different interaction representing atom-molecule interconversion, endows this system with nonlinearities, which differ significantly from the standard Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. Exact localized solutions are found to belong to two distinct classes. The first ones are analogous to the soliton solutions of the weakly coupled GP equation, whereas the second non- equivalent class is related to the solitons of the strongly coupled BEC. Distinct parameter domains characterize these solitons, some of which are analogous to the complex profile Bloch solitons in magnetic systems. These localized solutions are found to represent a variety of phenomena, which include co-existence of both atom-molecule complex and miscible-immiscible phases. Numerical sta- bility is explicitly checked, as also the stability analysis based on the study of quantum uctuations around our solutions. We also find out the domain of modulation instability in this system.

Three-dimensional solitons in coupled atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates

Timothy G. Vaughan, Karen V. Kheruntsyan, P. D. Drummond

We present a theoretical analysis of three-dimensional (3D) matter-wave solitons and their stability properties in coupled atomic and molecular Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The soliton solutions to the mean-field equations are obtained in an approximate analytical form by means of a variational approach. We investigate soliton stability within the parameter space described by the atom-molecule conversion coupling, the atom-atom $s$-wave scattering, and the bare formation energy of the molecular species. In terms of ordinary optics, this is analogous to the process of sub- or second-harmonic generation in a quadratic nonlinear medium modified by a cubic nonlinearity, together with a phase mismatch term between the fields. While the possibility of formation of multidimensional spatiotemporal solitons in pure quadratic media has been theoretically demonstrated previously, here we extend this prediction to matter-wave interactions in BEC systems where higher-order nonlinear processes due to interparticle collisions are unavoidable and may not be neglected. The stability of the solitons predicted for repulsive atom-atom interactions is investigated by direct numerical simulations of the equations of motion in a full 3D lattice. Our analysis also leads to a possible technique for demonstrating the ground state of the Schr\"odinger-Newton and related equations that describe Bose-Einstein condensates with nonlocal interparticle forces.

Control of the dynamics of coupled atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates: Modified Gross-Pitaevskii approach

Moumita Gupta, Krishna Rai Dastidar

We study the dynamics of the atomic and molecular Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of $^{87}\text{R}\text{b}$ in a spherically symmetric trap coupled by stimulated Raman photoassociation process. Considering the higher order nonlinearity in the atom-atom interaction we analyze the dynamics of the system using coupled modified Gross-Pitaevskii (MGP) equations and compare it with mean-field coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) dynamics. Considerable differences in the dynamics are obtained in these two approaches at large scattering length, i.e., for large values of peak-gas parameter ${x}_{pk}\ensuremath{\ge}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$. We show how the dynamics of the coupled system is affected when the atom-molecule and molecule-molecule interactions are considered together with the atom-atom interaction and also when the strengths of these three interactions are increased. The effect of detuning on the efficiency of conversion of atomic fractions into molecules is demonstrated and the feasibility of maximum molecular BEC formation by varying the Raman detuning parameter at different values of time is explored. Thus by varying the Raman detuning and the scattering length for atom-atom interaction one can control the dynamics of the coupled atomic-molecular BEC system. We have also solved coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations for atomic to molecular condensate formation through magnetic Feshbach resonance in a BEC of $^{85}\text{R}\text{b}$. We found similar features for oscillations between atomic and molecular condensates noted in previous theoretical study and obtained fairly good agreement with the evolution of total atomic condensate observed experimentally.

Stability and collapse of a hybrid Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms and molecules

Sadhan K. Adhikari

The dynamics of stability and collapse of a trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) coupled to a molecular one is studied using the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation including a nonlinear interaction term which can transform two atoms into a molecule and vice versa. We find an interesting oscillation of the number of atoms and molecules for a BEC of fixed mass. This oscillation is a consequence of continuous transformation in the condensate of two atoms into a molecule and vice versa. For the study of collapse an absorptive contact interaction and an imaginary quartic three-body recombination term are included in the GP equation. It is possible to have a collapse of one or both components when one or more of the nonlinear terms in the GP equation are attractive in nature, respectively.

Matter wave solitons and other localized excitations in Bose–Einstein condensates in atom optics

Paulsamy Muruganandam, M. Lakshmanan

This chapter focuses on exploring localized excitations in the variable coefficient nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation and its generalizations. The motivation comes from the fact that the NLS equation and its variants appear in several branches/topics of physics, including nonlinear optics and Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The chapter reviews critically the variety of matter wave solitons and their interactions in single- and multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates. It provides a brief overview of the mean Gross- Pitaevskii (GP) equation, derivation of the one-dimensional GP equation, and mapping of the 1D GP equation to the standard NLS equation. The chapter discusses matter wave single and multi bright and dark solitons of Bose– Einstein condensates with varying trap potentials and atomic interactions. It shows various solitons solutions of multi-component BECs described by the two coupled GP equations. In this case, the coupled GP equation has been mapped onto a two coupled NLS equation.

Chemical oscillation in ultracold chemistry

Subhrajit Modak, Priyam Das, Challenger Mishra +1 more

Abstract We demonstrate the occurrence of oscillatory reactions in the ultra-cold chemistry of atom-molecular Bose-Einstein condensate. Nonlinear oscillations in the mean-field dynamics occur for a specific range of elliptic modulus, giving rise to both in- and out-phase modulations in the atom-molecule population density. The reaction front velocity is found to be controlled by photoassociation, which also regulates the condensate density. Two distinct pairs of in-phase bright localized gap solitons are found as exact solutions, the existence of one of which necessarily requires a background. Cnoidal atomic density waves along with a plane-wave molecular motion are observed in both attractive and repulsive domains. The role of intra- and inter-species interactions on both existence and stability is explicated in the presence of photoassociation.

Matter-wave bright solitons in bose-einstein condensate / Abdelaziz Benseghir

We investigate the properties of modulational instability in the Salerno equation in quasi-one dimension in Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We analyzed the regions of modulational instability of nonlinear plane waves and determine the conditions of its existence in BEC. The existence and stability of strongly localized modes in discrete media is investigated with the framework of the Salerno model by using a linear analysis method. The regions of stability and instability are determined. Also the existence of localized modes for different values of parameters is shown numerically by homoclinic orbits intersection method. The response of Bose–Einstein condensates is studied with strong dipole–dipole atomic interactions to periodically varying perturbation. The dynamics is governed by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation with an additional nonlinear term, corresponding to nonlocal dipolar interactions. A mathematical model, based on the variational approximation, has been developed and applied to study parametric excitation of the condensates due to coefficient of nonlocal nonlinearity varying periodically. The model predicts the waveform of solitons in dipolar condensates and describes their small amplitude dynamics quite accurately. Theoretical predictions are verified by numerical simulations of the nonlocal Gross–Pitaevskii equation and a good agreement between them is found. The results can lead to better understanding of the properties of ultra-cold quantum gases, such as 52Cr, 164Dy and 168Er, where the long-range dipolar atomic interactions dominate the usual contact interactions. Dynamics of a matter wave soliton bouncing on the reflecting surface (atomic mirror) under the effect of gravity has been studied by analytical and numerical means. The iv analytical description is based on the variational approach. Resonant oscillations of the soliton's center of mass and width, induced by appropriate modulation of the atomic scattering length and the slope of the linear potential are analyzed. In numerical experiments, we observe the Fermi type acceleration of the soliton when the vertical position of the reflecting surface is periodically varied in time. Analytical predictions are compared with the results of numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and a qualitative agreement between them is found.
