Abstract

We consider Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of a time-modulated $s$-wave scattering length. Generically, the interaction leads to dephasing and decay of the wave packet. Based on a cyclic-time argument, we find---in addition to the linear Bloch oscillation and a rigid soliton solution---an infinite family of modulations that lead to a periodic time evolution of the wave packet. In order to quantitatively describe the dynamics of Bloch oscillations in the presence of time-modulated interactions, we employ two complementary methods: collective coordinates and the linear stability analysis of an extended wave packet. We provide instructive examples and address the question of robustness against external perturbations.

Super–Bloch oscillations with modulated interaction

Elena Díaz, Alberto García Mena, Kunihiko Asakura +1 more

We study super--Bloch oscillations of ultracold atoms in a shaken lattice potential, subjected to a harmonically modulated mean-field interaction. Usually, any interaction leads to the decay of the wave packet and its super--Bloch oscillation. Here, we use the phases of interaction and shaking with respect to the free Bloch oscillation as control parameters. We find two types of long-living cases: (i) suppression of the immediate broadening of the wave packet, and (ii) dynamical stability of all degrees of freedom. The latter relies on the rather robust symmetry argument of cyclic time [Gaul et al., Phys. Rev. A 84, 053627 (2011)].

Dynamics and stability of Bose-Einstein solitons in tilted optical lattices

Elena Díaz, Christopher Gaul, R. P. A. Lima +2 more

Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates realize sensitive matter-wave interferometers. We investigate the dynamics and stability of bright-soliton wave packets in one-dimensional tilted optical lattices with a modulated mean-field interaction $g(t)$. By means of a time-reversal argument, we prove the stability of Bloch oscillations of breathing solitons that would be quasistatically unstable. Floquet theory shows that these breathing solitons can be more stable against certain experimental perturbations than rigid solitons or even noninteracting wave packets.

Matter-wave solitons and finite-amplitude Bloch waves in optical lattices with spatially modulated nonlinearity

Jie-Fang Zhang, Yishen Li, Jianping Meng +2 more

We investigate solitons and nonlinear Bloch waves in Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in optical lattices (OLs). By introducing specially designed localized profiles of the spatial modulation of the attractive nonlinearity, we construct an infinite set of exact soliton solutions in terms of Mathieu and elliptic functions, with the chemical potential belonging to the semi-infinite gap of the OL-induced spectrum. Starting from the particular exact solutions, we employ the relaxation method to construct generic families of soliton solutions in a numerical form. The stability of the solitons is investigated through the computation of the eigenvalues for small perturbations, and also by direct simulations. Finally, we demonstrate a virtually exact (in the numerical sense) composition relation between nonlinear Bloch waves and solitons.

Coherence of nonlinear Bloch dynamics of Bose–Einstein condensates in deep optical lattices

Ai-Xia 爱霞 Zhang 张, Wei 薇 Zhang 张, Jie 杰 Wang 王 +3 more

Atomic interaction leads to dephasing and damping of Bloch oscillations (BOs) in optical lattices, which limits observation and applications of BOs. How to obtain persistent BOs is particularly important. Here, the nonlinear Bloch dynamics of the Bose–Einstein condensate with two-body and three-body interactions in deep optical lattices is studied. The damping rate induced by interactions is obtained. The damping induced by two-body interaction plays a dominant role, while the damping induced by three-body interaction is weak. However, when the two-body and three-body interactions satisfy a threshold, long-lived coherent BOs are observed. Furthermore, the Bloch dynamics with periodical modulation of linear force is studied. The frequencies of linear force corresponding to resonance and pseudoresonance are obtained, and rich dynamical phenomena, i.e., stable and strong BOs, drifting and dispersion of wave packet, are predicted. The controllable Bloch dynamics is provided with the periodic modulation of the linear force.

Stable Bloch Oscillations of Cold Atoms with Time-Dependent Interaction

Christopher Gaul, R. P. A. Lima, Elena Díaz +2 more

We investigate Bloch oscillations of interacting cold atoms in a mean-field framework. In general, atom-atom interaction causes dephasing and destroys Bloch oscillations. Here we show that Bloch oscillations are persistent if the interaction is modulated harmonically with suitable frequency and phase. For other modulations, Bloch oscillations are rapidly damped. We explain this behavior in terms of collective coordinates whose Hamiltonian dynamics permits one to predict a whole family of stable solutions. In order to describe also the unstable cases, we carry out a stability analysis for Bogoliubov excitations. Using Floquet theory, we are able to predict the unstable modes as well as their growth rate, found to be in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.

Modulation stabilization of Bloch oscillations of two-component Bose–Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Huai-Qiang Gu, Jun-Hong An, Kang Jin

We study the Bloch oscillations (BOs) of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) trapped in spin-dependent optical lattices. Based on the derived equations of motion of the wave packet in the basis of localized wave functions of the lattice sites, the damping effect induced by the intercomponent and intracomponent interactions to the BOs is explored analytically and numerically. We also show that such damping of the BOs can be suppressed entirely if all the atom-atom interactions are modulated synchronously and harmonically in time with suitable frequency via the Feshbach resonance. When the intercomponent and the intracomponent interactions have inverse signs, we find that the long-living BOs and even the revival of the BOs can be achieved via only statically modulating the configuration of optical lattices. The results provide a valuable guidance for achieving long-living BOs in the two-component BEC system by the Feshbach resonances and manipulating the configuration of the optical lattices.
