Abstract

We investigate solitons and nonlinear Bloch waves in Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in optical lattices (OLs). By introducing specially designed localized profiles of the spatial modulation of the attractive nonlinearity, we construct an infinite set of exact soliton solutions in terms of Mathieu and elliptic functions, with the chemical potential belonging to the semi-infinite gap of the OL-induced spectrum. Starting from the particular exact solutions, we employ the relaxation method to construct generic families of soliton solutions in a numerical form. The stability of the solitons is investigated through the computation of the eigenvalues for small perturbations, and also by direct simulations. Finally, we demonstrate a virtually exact (in the numerical sense) composition relation between nonlinear Bloch waves and solitons.

Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices: Band-gap structure and solitons

Pearl J. Y. Louis, Elena A. Ostrovskaya, Craig M. Savage +1 more

We analyze the existence and stability of spatially extended (Bloch-type) and localized states of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into an optical lattice. In the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a periodic potential, we study the band-gap structure of the matter-wave spectrum in both the linear and nonlinear regimes. We demonstrate the existence of families of spatially localized matter-wave gap solitons, and analyze their stability in different band gaps, for both repulsive and attractive atomic interactions.

Statics, dynamics, and manipulations of bright matter-wave solitons in optical lattices

P. G. Kevrekidis, D. J. Frantzeskakis, R. Carretero-González +3 more

Motivated by the recent experimental achievements in the work with Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), we consider bright matter-wave solitons, in the presence of a parabolic magnetic trap and a spatially periodic optical lattice (OL), in the attractive BEC. We examine pinned states of the soliton and their stability by means of perturbation theory. The analytical predictions are found to be in good agreement with numerical simulations. We then explore possibilities to use a time-modulated OL as a means of stopping and trapping a moving soliton, and of transferring an initially stationary soliton to a prescribed position by a moving OL. We also study the emission of radiation from the soliton moving across the combined magnetic trap and OL. We find that the soliton moves freely (without radiation) across a weak lattice, but suffers strong loss in deeper OLs.

Localized gap-soliton trains of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice

D. L. Wang, X. H. Yan, Weixi Liu

We develop a systematic analytical approach to study the linear and nonlinear solitary excitations of quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in an optical lattice. For the linear case, the Bloch wave in the nth energy band is a linear superposition of Mathieu's functions ce_{n-1} and se_{n} ; and the Bloch wave in the nth band gap is a linear superposition of ce_{n} and se_{n} . For the nonlinear case, only solitons inside the band gaps are likely to be generated and there are two types of solitons-fundamental solitons (which is a localized and stable state) and subfundamental solitons (which is a localized but unstable state). In addition, we find that the pinning position and the amplitude of the fundamental soliton in the lattice can be controlled by adjusting both the lattice depth and spacing. Our numerical results on fundamental solitons are in quantitative agreement with those of the experimental observation [B. Eiermann, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 230401 (2004)]. Furthermore, we predict that a localized gap-soliton train consisting of several fundamental solitons can be realized by increasing the length of the condensate in currently experimental conditions.

Soliton generation of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Nikolay A. Kostov, V. Z. Enolski, Vladimir Stefanov Gerdjikov +2 more

Coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations (CNLS) with an external elliptic function potential model a quasi one--dimensional interacting two-component Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a standing light wave. New families of stationary solutions of the CNLS with a periodic potential are presented and their stability studied by direct numerical simulations. Some of these solutions allow reduction to Manakov system. From a physical point of view these solutions can be interpreted as exact Bloch states at the edge of the Brillouin zone. Some of them are stable while others are found to be unstable against modulations of long wavelength. The solutions which are modulationally unstable are shown to lead to the formation of localized ground states of the coupled BEC system.

Partially incoherent gap solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

Ilya M. Merhasin, Boris A. Malomed, Y. B. Band

We construct families of incoherent matter-wave solitons in a repulsive degenerate Bose gas trapped in an optical lattice (OL), i.e., gap solitons, and investigate their stability at zero and finite temperature, using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations. The gap solitons are composed of a coherent condensate, and normal and anomalous densities of incoherent vapor cotrapped with the condensate. Both intragap and intergap solitons are constructed, with chemical potentials of the components falling in one or different band gaps in the OL-induced spectrum. Solitons change gradually with temperature. Families of intragap solitons are completely stable (both in direct simulations and in terms of eigenvalues of perturbation modes), while the intergap family may have a very small unstable eigenvalue (nevertheless, they feature no instability in direct simulations). Stable higher-order (multihumped) solitons and bound complexes of fundamental solitons are found too.

Gap solitons and nonlinear Bloch states in Bose-Einstein condensates with current-dependent interactions

Jintao Xu, Qian Jia, Haibo Qiu +1 more

We show how the chiral properties of Bose-Einstein condensates subject to current-density interactions and loaded in optical lattices can be observed in the realization of nonlinear Bloch states, whose spectrum lacks the usual periodic structure. Chirality is also manifested by spatially localized states, or gap solitons, which are found for positive rotation rates of the lattice at the energy gaps between the linear energy bands, whereas for negative rotations they appear in the semi-infinite gap of the linear spectrum. The stability of extended and localized states is checked through the spectrum of linear excitations and nonlinear time evolution of perturbed states, and the phenomenon of Bloch oscillations is explored. Our results are obtained in quasi-one-dimensional ring geometries with feasible experimental parameters.
