Abstract

We consider a coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations describing an atomic Bose-Einstein condensates coupled to a molecular condensates through the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage loaded in an external potential. The existence of dark state are investigated within the full parameter space accounts for all the nonlinear collisions, together with the atom-molecule conversion coupling and external potential. The results show that there are a class of external potentials such as double-well, periodical and double periodical, and harmonic potentials, where the exact dark solutions can be formed. Our results may raise the possibility of relative experiments for dark state in the coupled atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates.

Inhomogeneous dark states of atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates in trapping potentials

Hector Cruz, V. V. Konotop

We investigate possibilities of existence of inhomogeneous dark states of atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates loaded in trap potentials. The system is described by three-coupled equations of the Gross-Pitaevskii type, which account for contributions of the kinetic energy, two-body interactions, and an external potential, and which govern the conversion between atoms and molecules in the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. We report a class of trapping potentials allowing for the existence of localized stable dark states. The respective atomic and molecular distributions are computed, and their stability and dynamics are discussed.

Adiabatic splitting, transport, and self-trapping of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential

Carlo Ottaviani, V. Ahufinger, R. Corbalán +1 more

We show that the adiabatic dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a double-well potential can be described in terms of a dark variable resulting from the combination of the population imbalance and the spatial atomic coherence between the two wells. By means of this dark variable, we extend, to the nonlinear matter-wave case, the recent proposal by Vitanov and Shore [Phys. Rev. A 73, 053402 (2006)] on adiabatic passage techniques to coherently control the population of two internal levels of an atom or molecule. We investigate the conditions to adiabatically split or transport a BEC as well as to prepare an adiabatic self-trapping state by the optimal delayed temporal variation of the tunneling rate via either the energy bias between the two wells or the BEC nonlinearity. The emergence of nonlinear eigenstates and unstable stationary solutions of the system as well as their role in the breaking down of the adiabatic dynamics is investigated in detail.

Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Population Transfer of Two Bose—Einstein Condensates

胡正峰, 杜春光

Considering all the ground-state atom interactions,we investigate the population transfer of two Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) states, which are trapped in diffecent potential wells,or two ground states of the BEC in the same trap using the stimulated Raman adiabatic process. With a proper choice of pulsed geometric parameters, the dark state exists.By simply choosing ground-state detunings, the effects of the interatomic interaction can be suppressed and a high population transfer rate can be obtained.

Three-dimensional solitons in coupled atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates

Timothy G. Vaughan, Karen V. Kheruntsyan, P. D. Drummond

We present a theoretical analysis of three-dimensional (3D) matter-wave solitons and their stability properties in coupled atomic and molecular Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The soliton solutions to the mean-field equations are obtained in an approximate analytical form by means of a variational approach. We investigate soliton stability within the parameter space described by the atom-molecule conversion coupling, the atom-atom $s$-wave scattering, and the bare formation energy of the molecular species. In terms of ordinary optics, this is analogous to the process of sub- or second-harmonic generation in a quadratic nonlinear medium modified by a cubic nonlinearity, together with a phase mismatch term between the fields. While the possibility of formation of multidimensional spatiotemporal solitons in pure quadratic media has been theoretically demonstrated previously, here we extend this prediction to matter-wave interactions in BEC systems where higher-order nonlinear processes due to interparticle collisions are unavoidable and may not be neglected. The stability of the solitons predicted for repulsive atom-atom interactions is investigated by direct numerical simulations of the equations of motion in a full 3D lattice. Our analysis also leads to a possible technique for demonstrating the ground state of the Schr\"odinger-Newton and related equations that describe Bose-Einstein condensates with nonlocal interparticle forces.

The exact soliton solutions of the quasi-one-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a square-tanh potential is investigated. Both the dark soliton and the bright soliton for the repulsive interparticle interaction are found under the existence of the external confining potential.Their stability is examined using analytical method.
