Abstract

We present accurate results based on quantum Monte Carlo simulations of two-component bosonic systems on a square lattice and in the presence of an external harmonic confinement. Starting from hopping parameters and interaction strengths which stabilize the Ising antiferromagnetic phase in the homogeneous case and at half-integer filling factor, we study how the presence of the harmonic confinement challenges the realization of such a phase. We consider realistic trapping frequencies and number of particles, and we establish under which conditions, i.e., total number of particles and population imbalance, the antiferromagnetic phase can be observed in the trap.

Monte Carlo study of fermionic trions in a square lattice with harmonic confinement

Steffen Backes, Irakli Titvinidze, A. Privitera +1 more

We investigate the strong-coupling limit of a three-component Fermi mixture in an optical lattice with attractive interactions. In this limit bound states (trions) of the three components are formed. We study the effective Hamiltonian for these composite fermions and show that it is asymptotically equivalent at the leading order to an antiferromagnetic Ising model. By using Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the spatial arrangement of the trions in this regime and the formation of a trionic density wave, both in a homogeneous lattice and in the presence of an additional harmonic confinement. Depending on the strength of the confinement and on the temperature, we found several scenarios for the trionic distribution, including the coexistence of disordered trions with a density wave and band insulator phases. Our results show that, due to a proximity effect, staggered density modulations are induced in regions of the trap where they would not otherwise be present according to the local density approximation.

Finite-temperature study of bosons in a two-dimensional optical lattice

Khan W. Mahmud, Eric Duchon, Yasuyuki Kato +3 more

We use quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations to study the combined effects of harmonic confinement and temperature for bosons in a two-dimensional(2D) optical lattice. The scale-invariant, finite temperature state diagram is presented for the Bose-Hubbard model in terms of experimental parameters -- the particle number, confining potential and interaction strength. To distinguish the nature of the spatially separated superfluid, Mott insulator, and normal Bose liquid phases, we examine the local density, compressibility, superfluid density, and Green's function. In the annular superfluid rings, as the width of the ring decreases, the long-range superfluid correlations start to deviate from an equivalent homogeneous 2D system. At zero temperature, the correlation decay is intermediate between one-dimension and two-dimensions, while at a finite temperature, the decay is similar to that in one-dimension at a much lower temperature. The calculations reveal shortcomings of the local density approximation in describing superfluid properties of trapped bosons. We also present the finite-temperature phase diagram for the homogeneous two dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. We compare our state diagram with the results of a recent experiment at NIST on a harmonically trapped 2D lattice [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 110401 (2010)], and identify a finite-temperature effect in the experiment.

Supersolid in a one-dimensional optical lattice in the presence of a harmonic trap

Tapan Mishra, S. Ramanan, Ramesh V. Pai +2 more

We study a system of ultra-cold atoms possessing long range interaction (e.g. dipole-dipole interaction) in a one dimensional optical lattice in the presence of a confining harmonic trap. We have shown that for large enough on-site and nearest neighbor interaction a supersolid phase can be stabilized, consistent with the previous Quantum Monte Carlo and DMRG results for the homogeneous system. Due to the external harmonic trap potential the supersolid phase coexists with other phases. We emphasize on the experimental signatures of the various ground state phases in the presence of a trap.

Anisotropic pair superfluidity of trapped two-component Bose gases in an optical lattice

Yongqiang Li, Liang He, Walter Hofstetter

We theoretically investigate the pair-superfluid phase of two-component ultracold gases with attractive inter-species interactions in an optical lattice. We establish the phase diagram for filling n = 1 at zero and finite temperatures, by applying bosonic dynamical mean-field theory, and observe stable pair-superfluid and charge-density wave quantum phases for asymmetric hopping of the two species. While the pair superfluid is found to be robust in the presence of a harmonic trap, we observe that it is destroyed already by a small population imbalance of the two species.

Antiferromagnetism of Repulsively Interacting Fermions in a Harmonic Trap

Qi Jian-Qing, Wang Lei, Xi Dai

We propose a real-space Gutzwiller variational approach and apply it to a system of repulsively interacting ultracold fermions with spin-½ trapped in an optical lattice with a harmonic confinement. Using the real-space Gutzwiller variational approach, we find that in a system with balanced spin-mixtures on a square lattice, antiferromagnetism either appears in a checkerboard pattern or forms a ring, and the antiferromagnetic order is stable in the regions where the particle density is close to one, which is consistent with the recent results obtained by the real-space dynamical mean-field theory approach. We also investigate the imbalanced case and find that the antiferromagnetic order is suppressed there.

Ising antiferromagnet in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with mismatched Fermi surfaces

Jan Gukelberger, Lei Wang, Lode Pollet

We study the phase diagram of the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model with spin-dependent anisotropic hopping at half filling. The system develops Ising antiferromagnetic long-range order already at infinitesimal repulsive interaction strength in the ground state. Outside the perturbative regime, unbiased predictions for the critical temperatures of the Ising antiferromagnet are made for representative interaction values by a variety of state-of-the-art quantum Monte Carlo methods, including the diagrammatic Monte Carlo, continuous-time determinantal Monte Carlo, and path-integral Monte Carlo methods. Our findings are relevant to ultracold atom experiments in the $p$ orbital or with spin-dependent optical lattices.
