Abstract

We have precisely determined the ground state phase diagram of the quantum spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice using the tensor renormalization group method. We find that the ferromagnetic, ferroquadrupolar, and a large part of the antiferromagnetic phases are stable against quantum fluctuations. However, around the phase where the ground state is antiferroquadrupolar ordered in the classical limit, quantum fluctuations suppress completely all magnetic orders, leading to a plaquette order phase which breaks the lattice symmetry but preserves the spin SU(2) symmetry. On the evidence of our numerical results, the quantum phase transition between the antiferromagnetic phase and the plaquette phase is found to be either a direct second order or a very weak first order transition.

Frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice: A candidate for deconfined quantum criticality

DAMIAN J. J. FARNELL, R. F. Bishop, P. H. Y. Li +2 more

We study the ground-state (gs) phase diagram of the frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ ${J}_{1}$--${J}_{2}$--${J}_{3}$ antiferromagnet with ${J}_{2}={J}_{3}=\ensuremath{\kappa}{J}_{1}$ on the honeycomb lattice using coupled-cluster theory and exact diagonalization methods. We present results for the gs energy, magnetic order parameter, spin-spin correlation function, and plaquette valence-bond crystal (PVBC) susceptibility. We find a N\'eel antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase for $\ensuremath{\kappa}<{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{1}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.47$, a collinear striped AFM phase for $\ensuremath{\kappa}>{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{2}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.60$, and a paramagnetic PVBC phase for ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{1}}\ensuremath{\lesssim}\ensuremath{\kappa}\ensuremath{\lesssim}{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{2}}$. The transition at ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{2}}$ appears to be of first-order type, while that at ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{1}}$ is continuous. Since the N\'eel and PVBC phases break different symmetries our results favor the deconfinement scenario for the transition at ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{1}}$.

Deconfined Criticality in the Frustrated Heisenberg Honeycomb Antiferromagnet

R. Ganesh, Jeroen van den Brink, Satoshi Nishimoto

Using the density matrix renormalization group, we determine the phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a honeycomb lattice with a nearest-neighbor interaction J(1) and a frustrating, next-nearest-neighbor exchange J(2). As frustration increases, the ground state exhibits Néel, plaquette, and dimer orders, with critical points at J(2)/J(1) = 0.22 and 0.35. We observe that both the spin gap and the corresponding order parameters vanish continuously at both the critical points, indicating the presence of deconfined quantum criticality.

Ground-state study of the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice using tensor networks

Ido Niesen, Philippe Corboz

Making use of infinite projected entangled pair states, we investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the nearest-neighbor spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice. In agreement with previous studies, we find the ferromagnetic, ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ magnetically ordered, ferroquadrupolar and antiferroquadrupolar phases, and confirm that all corresponding phase transitions are first order. Moreover, we provide an accurate estimate of the location of the ferroquadrupolar to ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ magnetically ordered phase transition, thereby fully establishing the phase diagram. Also, we do not encounter any signs of the existence of a quantum paramagnetic phase. In particular, contrary to the equivalent square lattice model, we demonstrate that on the triangular lattice the one-dimensional Haldane phase does not reach all the way up to the two-dimensional limit. Finally, we investigate the possibility of an intermediate partially magnetic partially quadrupolar phase close to $\ensuremath{\theta}=\ensuremath{\pi}/2$, and we show that, also contrary to the square lattice case, this phase is not present on the triangular lattice.

Quantum phase diagram of the spin-1 J1−J2 Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice

Shou-Shu Gong, Wei Kang Zhu, D. N. Sheng

Strongly correlated systems with geometric frustrations can host the emergent phases of matter with unconventional properties. Here, we study the spin $S=1$ Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with the antiferromagnetic first- (${J}_{1}$) and second-neighbor (${J}_{2}$) interactions ($0.0\ensuremath{\le}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\le}0.5$) by means of density-matrix renormalization group. In the parameter regime ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.27$, the system sustains a N\'eel antiferromagnetic phase. At the large ${J}_{2}$ side ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.32$, a stripe antiferromagnetic phase is found. Between the two magnetic ordered phases $0.27\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.32$, we find a nonmagnetic intermediate region with a plaquette valence-bond order. Although our calculations are limited within a six unit-cell width on cylinder, we present evidence that this plaquette state could be a strong candidate for this nonmagnetic region in the thermodynamic limit. We also briefly discuss the nature of the quantum phase transitions in the system. We gain further insight into the nonmagnetic phases in the spin-1 system by comparing its phase diagram with the spin-$1/2$ system.

Quantum phase transition, O(3) universality class, and phase diagram of the spin- 12 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a distorted honeycomb lattice: A tensor renormalization-group study

Wei Li, Shou-Shu Gong, Yang Zhao +1 more

The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the distorted honeycomb (DHC) lattice is studied by means of the tensor renormalization-group method. It is unveiled that the system has a quantum phase transition of second order between the gapped quantum dimer phase and a collinear N\'eel phase at the critical point of coupling ratio ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.54$, where the quantum critical exponents $\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.69(2)$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\simeq}1.363(8)$ are obtained. The quantum criticality is found to fall into the $O(3)$ universality class. A ground-state phase diagram in the field-coupling ratio plane is proposed, where the phases such as the dimer, semiclassical N\'eel, and polarized phases are identified. A link between the present spin system to the boson Hubbard model on the DHC lattice is also discussed.

Phase diagram of a frustrated quantum antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice: Magnetic order versus valence-bond crystal formation

A. Fabricio Albuquerque, David R. Schwandt, Balázs Hetényi +3 more

We present a comprehensive computational study of the phase diagram of the frustrated $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice, with second-nearest $({J}_{2})$ and third-neighbor $({J}_{3})$ couplings. Using a combination of exact diagonalizations (EDs) of the original spin model, of the Hamiltonian projected into the nearest-neighbor short-range valence-bond basis, and of an effective quantum dimer model, as well as a self-consistent cluster mean-field theory, we determine the boundaries of several magnetically ordered phases in the region ${J}_{2},{J}_{3}\ensuremath{\in}[0,1]$, and find a sizable magnetically disordered region in between. We characterize part of this magnetically disordered phase as a plaquette valence-bond crystal phase. At larger ${J}_{2}$, we locate a sizable region in which staggered valence-bond crystal correlations are found to be important, either due to genuine valence-bond crystal (VBC) ordering or as a consequence of magnetically ordered phases, which break lattice rotational symmetry. Furthermore, we find that a particular parameter-free Gutzwiller projected tight-binding wave function has remarkably accurate energies compared to finite-size extrapolated ED energies along the transition line from conventional N\'eel to plaquette VBC phases, a fact that points to possibly interesting critical behavior---such as a deconfined critical point---across this transition. We also comment on the relevance of this spin model to model the spin liquid region found in the half filled Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice.
