Abstract

We present a comprehensive computational study of the phase diagram of the frustrated $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice, with second-nearest $({J}_{2})$ and third-neighbor $({J}_{3})$ couplings. Using a combination of exact diagonalizations (EDs) of the original spin model, of the Hamiltonian projected into the nearest-neighbor short-range valence-bond basis, and of an effective quantum dimer model, as well as a self-consistent cluster mean-field theory, we determine the boundaries of several magnetically ordered phases in the region ${J}_{2},{J}_{3}\ensuremath{\in}[0,1]$, and find a sizable magnetically disordered region in between. We characterize part of this magnetically disordered phase as a plaquette valence-bond crystal phase. At larger ${J}_{2}$, we locate a sizable region in which staggered valence-bond crystal correlations are found to be important, either due to genuine valence-bond crystal (VBC) ordering or as a consequence of magnetically ordered phases, which break lattice rotational symmetry. Furthermore, we find that a particular parameter-free Gutzwiller projected tight-binding wave function has remarkably accurate energies compared to finite-size extrapolated ED energies along the transition line from conventional N\'eel to plaquette VBC phases, a fact that points to possibly interesting critical behavior---such as a deconfined critical point---across this transition. We also comment on the relevance of this spin model to model the spin liquid region found in the half filled Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice.

Frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice: A candidate for deconfined quantum criticality

DAMIAN J. J. FARNELL, R. F. Bishop, P. H. Y. Li +2 more

We study the ground-state (gs) phase diagram of the frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ ${J}_{1}$--${J}_{2}$--${J}_{3}$ antiferromagnet with ${J}_{2}={J}_{3}=\ensuremath{\kappa}{J}_{1}$ on the honeycomb lattice using coupled-cluster theory and exact diagonalization methods. We present results for the gs energy, magnetic order parameter, spin-spin correlation function, and plaquette valence-bond crystal (PVBC) susceptibility. We find a N\'eel antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase for $\ensuremath{\kappa}<{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{1}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.47$, a collinear striped AFM phase for $\ensuremath{\kappa}>{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{2}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.60$, and a paramagnetic PVBC phase for ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{1}}\ensuremath{\lesssim}\ensuremath{\kappa}\ensuremath{\lesssim}{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{2}}$. The transition at ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{2}}$ appears to be of first-order type, while that at ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{1}}$ is continuous. Since the N\'eel and PVBC phases break different symmetries our results favor the deconfinement scenario for the transition at ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{1}}$.

Competition between spin liquids and valence-bond order in the frustrated spin- 12 Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice

Francesco Ferrari, Samuel Bieri, Federico Becca

Using variational wave functions and Monte Carlo techniques, we study the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with first-neighbor ${J}_{1}$ and second-neighbor ${J}_{2}$ antiferromagnetic couplings on the honeycomb lattice. We perform a systematic comparison of magnetically ordered and nonmagnetic states (spin liquids and valence-bond solids) to obtain the ground-state phase diagram. N\'eel order is stabilized for small values of the frustrating second-neighbor coupling. Increasing the ratio ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}$, we find strong evidence for a continuous transition to a nonmagnetic phase at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\approx}0.23$. Close to the transition point, the Gutzwiller-projected uniform resonating valence-bond state gives an excellent approximation to the exact ground-state energy. For $0.23\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.36$, a gapless ${Z}_{2}$ spin liquid with Dirac nodes competes with a plaquette valence-bond solid. In contrast, the gapped spin liquid considered in previous works has significantly higher variational energy. Although the plaquette valence-bond order is expected to be present as soon as the N\'eel order melts, this ordered state becomes clearly favored only for ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.3$. Finally, for $0.36\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\le}0.5$, a valence-bond solid with columnar order takes over as the ground state, being also lower in energy than the magnetic state with collinear order. We perform a detailed finite-size scaling and standard data collapse analysis, and we discuss the possibility of a deconfined quantum critical point separating the N\'eel antiferromagnet from the plaquette valence-bond solid.

Quantum phases in the frustrated Heisenberg model on the bilayer honeycomb lattice

Hao Zhang, Marcelo Arlego, Carlos Alberto Lamas

We use a combination of analytical and numerical techniques to study the phase diagram of the frustrated Heisenberg model on the bilayer honeycomb lattice. Using the Schwinger-boson description of the spin operators followed by a mean-field decoupling, the magnetic phase diagram is studied as a function of the frustration coupling ${J}_{2}$ and the interlayer coupling ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$. The presence of both magnetically ordered and disordered phases is investigated by means of the evaluation of ground-state energy, spin gap, local magnetization, and spin-spin correlations. We observe a phase with a spin gap and short-range N\'eel correlations that survives for nonzero next-nearest-neighbor interaction and interlayer coupling. Furthermore, we detect signatures of a reentrant behavior in the melting of the N\'eel phase and symmetry restoring when the system undergoes a transition from an on-layer nematic valence-bond crystal phase to an interlayer valence-bond crystal phase. We complement our work with exact diagonalization on small clusters and dimer-series expansion calculations, together with a linear spin-wave approach to study the phase diagram as a function of the spin $S$, the frustration, and the interlayer couplings.

Phase diagram of a frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice: The J1 - J2 - J3 model

P. H. Y. Li, R. F. Bishop, DAMIAN J. J. FARNELL +1 more

We use the coupled-cluster method in high orders of approximation to make a comprehensive study of the ground-state (GS) phase diagram of the spin-1/2 ${J}_{1}$-${J}_{2}$-${J}_{3}$ model on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice with antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions up to third-nearest neighbors. Results are presented for the GS energy and the average local onsite magnetization. With the nearest-neighbor coupling strength ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{\equiv}1$, we find four magnetically ordered phases in the parameter window ${J}_{2},{J}_{3}\ensuremath{\in}[0,1]$, namely, the N\'eel, striped, and N\'eel-II collinear AFM phases, plus a spiral phase. The N\'eel-II phase appears as a stable GS phase in the classical version of the model only for values ${J}_{3}<0$. Each of these four ordered phases shares a boundary with a disordered quantum paramagnetic (QP) phase, and at several widely separated points on the phase boundaries the QP phase has an infinite susceptibility to plaquette valence-bond crystalline order. We identify all of the phase boundaries with good precision in the parameter window studied, and we find three tricritical quantum critical points therein at (a) $({J}_{2}^{{c}_{1}},{J}_{3}^{{c}_{1}})=(0.51\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01,0.69\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01)$ between the N\'eel, striped, and QP phases; (b) $({J}_{2}^{{c}_{2}},{J}_{3}^{{c}_{2}})=(0.65\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02,0.55\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01)$ between the striped, spiral, and QP phases; and (c) $({J}_{2}^{{c}_{3}},{J}_{3}^{{c}_{3}})=(0.69\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01,0.12\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01)$ between the spiral, N\'eel-II, and QP phases.

Plaquette valence-bond crystal in the frustrated Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet on the square lattice

Matthieu Mambrini, Andreas Martin Läuchli, Didier Poilblanc +1 more

Using both exact diagonalizations and diagonalizations in a subset of short-range valence-bond singlets, we address the nature of the groundstate of the Heisenberg spin-$1∕2$ antiferromagnet on the square lattice with competing next-nearest and next-next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings (${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{3}$ model). A detailed comparison of the two approaches reveals a region along the line $({J}_{2}+{J}_{3})∕{J}_{1}=1∕2$, where the description in terms of nearest-neighbor singlet coverings is excellent, therefore providing evidence for a magnetically disordered region. Furthermore, a careful analysis of dimer-dimer correlation functions, dimer structure factors and plaquette-plaquette correlation functions provides striking evidence for the presence of a plaquette valence bond crystal order in part of the magnetically disordered region.

Ground-state phases of the spin- 1 J 1 − J 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice

P. H. Y. Li, R. F. Bishop

We study the zero-temperature quantum phase diagram of a spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice with both nearest-neighbor exchange coupling ${J}_{1}>0$ and frustrating next-nearest-neighbor coupling ${J}_{2}\ensuremath{\equiv}\ensuremath{\kappa}{J}_{1}>0$, using the coupled cluster method implemented to high orders of approximation, and based on model states with different forms of classical magnetic order. For each we calculate directly in the bulk thermodynamic limit both ground-state low-energy parameters (including the energy per spin, magnetic order parameter, spin stiffness coefficient, and zero-field uniform transverse magnetic susceptibility) and their generalized susceptibilities to various forms of valence-bond crystalline (VBC) order, as well as the energy gap to the lowest-lying spin-triplet excitation. In the range $0<\ensuremath{\kappa}<1$ we find evidence for four distinct phases. Two of these are quasiclassical phases with antiferromagnetic long-range order, one with two-sublattice N\'eel order for $\ensuremath{\kappa}<{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{1}}=0.250(5)$, and another with four-sublattice N\'eel-II order for $\ensuremath{\kappa}>{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{2}}=0.340(5)$. Two different paramagnetic phases are found to exist in the intermediate region. Over the range ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{1}}<\ensuremath{\kappa}<{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{c}^{i}=0.305(5)$ we find a gapless phase with no discernible magnetic order, which is a strong candidate for being a quantum spin liquid, while over the range ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{c}^{i}<\ensuremath{\kappa}<{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{2}}$ we find a gapped phase, which is most likely a lattice nematic with staggered dimer VBC order that breaks the lattice rotational symmetry.
