Abstract

We propose a scheme to transmit information via the statistical distribution of excitations of a nanomechanical resonator. It employs a controllable coupling between this system and a Cooper pair box. The success probability and the fidelity are calculated and compared with those obtained in an atom-field system in different regimes. Addtionaly, the scheme can also be applied to prepare low excited Fock states.

Quantum measurement of a coupled nanomechanical resonator–Cooper-pair box system

E. K. Twyeffort Irish, Keith Schwab

We show two effects as a result of considering the second-order correction to the spectrum of a nanomechanical resonator electrostatically coupled to a Cooper-pair box. The spectrum of the Cooper-pair box is modified in a way which depends on the Fock state of the resonator. Similarly, the frequency of the resonator becomes dependent upon the state of the Cooper-pair box. We consider whether these frequency shifts could be utilized to prepare the nanomechanical resonator in a Fock state, to perform a quantum non-demolition measurement of the resonator Fock state, and to distinguish the phase states of the Cooper-pair box.

Continuous quantum nondemolition measurement of Fock states of a nanoresonator using feedback-controlled circuit QED

M. J. Woolley, Andrew C. Doherty, Gerard J Milburn

We propose a scheme for the quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of Fock states of a nanomechanical resonator via feedback control of a coupled circuit QED system. A Cooper pair box (CPB) is coupled to both the nanoresonator and microwave cavity. The CPB is readout via homodyne detection on the cavity and feedback control is used to effect a nondissipative measurement of the CPB. This realizes an indirect QND measurement of the nanoresonator via a second-order coupling of the CPB to the nanoresonator number operator. The phonon number of the Fock state may be determined by integrating the stochastic master equation derived, or by processing of the measurement signal.

Engineering Quantum States of a Nanoresonator via a Simple Auxiliary System

Kurt A. Jacobs

We show how to engineer an extensive range of nonlinear Hamiltonians for a nanomechanical resonator. The technique requires only a time-dependent drive applied to a Cooper-pair box or second oscillator to which the nanoresonator is coupled. This method allows one to generate a large number of nonclassical states, as well as Hamiltonians whose classical counterparts are chaotic.

Advanced control with a Cooper-pair box: Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage and Fock-state generation in a nanomechanical resonator

Jens Siewert, Tobias Brandes, G. Falci

The rapid experimental progress in the field of superconducting nanocircuits gives rise to an increasing quest for advanced quantum-control techniques for these macroscopically coherent systems. Here we demonstrate theoretically that stimulated Raman adiabatic passage should be possible with the quantronium setup of a Cooper-pair box. The scheme appears to be robust against decoherence and should be realizable even with the existing technology. As an application we present a method to generate single-phonon states of a nanomechanical resonator by vacuum-stimulated adiabatic passage with the superconducting nanocircuit coupled to the resonator.

Entanglement from a nanomechanical resonator weakly coupled to a single Cooper-pair box

Lin Tian

We present a quantum optics scheme of generating large-amplitude Schr\"odinger cat states and entanglement in a weakly coupled nanomechanical resonator and single Cooper-pair box system. We show that the entanglement in this system can be detected by a spectroscopic method and can be generated at finite temperature and in the presence of environmental fluctuations.

Continuous Measurement of the Energy Eigenstates of a Nanomechanical Resonator without a Nondemolition Probe

Kurt A. Jacobs, Pavel Lougovski, M. P. Blencowe

We show that it is possible to perform a continuous measurement that continually projects a nanoresonator into its energy eigenstates by employing a linear coupling with a two-state system. This technique makes it possible to perform a measurement that exposes the quantum nature of the resonator by coupling it to a Cooper-pair box and a superconducting transmission line resonator.
