Abstract

We study the quantum phases of a three-color Hubbard model that arises in the dynamics of the $p$-band orbitals of spinless fermions in an optical lattice. Strong, color-dependent interactions are induced by an optical Feshbach resonance. Starting from the microscopic scattering properties of ultracold atoms, we derive the orbital exchange constants at 1/3 filling on the cubic optical lattice. Using this, we compute the phase diagram in a Gutzwiller ansatz. We find phases with ``axial orbital order'' in which ${p}_{z}$ and ${p}_{x}+i{p}_{y}$ (or ${p}_{x}\ensuremath{-}i{p}_{y}$) orbitals alternate.

Orbital phases of $p$-band ultracold fermions in the frustrated triangular lattice

Jiaqi Wu, Hui Tan, Cao, Rui +2 more

Orbital degrees of freedom play an important role for understanding the emergence of unconventional quantum phases. Ultracold atomic gases in optical lattices provide a wonderful platform to simulate orbital physics. In this work, we consider spinless fermionic atoms loaded into $p$-orbital bands of a two-dimensional frustrated triangular lattice. The system can be described by an extended Fermi-Hubbard model, which is numerically solved by using the orbital version of real-space dynamical mean-field theory. Low-temperature phase diagrams are obtained, which contain stripe-, ferro- and para-orbital ordered quantum phases, due to the interplay of anisotropic hoppings and geometrical frustration. In order to understand the underlying mechanics of competing orbital orders, we derive an effective orbital-exchange model, which yields consistent explanation with our main numerical results.

Trionic phase of ultracold fermions in an optical lattice: A variational study

Ákos Rapp, Walter Hofstetter, Gergely Zaránd

To investigate ultracold fermionic atoms of three internal states (colors) in an optical lattice, subject to strong attractive interaction, we study the attractive three-color Hubbard model in infinite dimensions by using a variational approach. We find a quantum phase transition between a weak-coupling superconducting phase and a strong-coupling trionic phase where groups of three atoms are bound to a composite fermion. We show how the Gutzwiller variational theory can be reformulated in terms of an effective field theory with three-body interactions and how this effective field theory can be solved exactly in infinite dimensions by using the methods of dynamical mean field theory.

Orbital Order in Mott Insulators of Spinless p -Band Fermions

Erhai Zhao, W. Vincent Liu

A gas of strongly interacting single-species (spinless) p-orbital fermionic atoms in 2D optical lattices is proposed and studied. Several interesting new features are found. In the Mott limit on a square lattice, the gas is found to be described effectively by an orbital exchange Hamiltonian equivalent to a pseudospin-1/2 XXZ model. For a triangular, honeycomb, or kagome lattice, the orbital exchange is geometrically frustrated and described by a new quantum 120 degrees model. We determine the orbital ordering on the kagome lattice, and show how orbital wave fluctuations select ground states via the order by disorder mechanism for the honeycomb lattice. We discuss experimental signatures of various orbital ordering.

Feshbach resonances in an optical lattice

D. B. M. Dickerscheid, Usama Al Khawaja, D. van Oosten +1 more

We present a theory for ultracold atomic gases in an optical lattice near a Feshbach resonance. In the single-band approximation the theory describes atoms and molecules that can both tunnel through the lattice. Moreover, an avoided crossing between the two-atom and the molecular states occurs at every site. We determine the microscopic parameters of the generalized Hubbard model that describes this physics, using the experimentally known parameters of the Feshbach resonance in the absence of the optical lattice. As an application we also calculate the zero-temperature phase diagram of an atomic Bose gas in an optical lattice.

Spin-quadrupole ordering of spin- 32 ultracold fermionic atoms in optical lattices in the one-band Hubbard model

Hong-Hao Tu, Guang-Ming Zhang, Lu Yu

Based on a generalized one-band Hubbard model, we study magnetic properties of Mott insulating states for ultracold spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ fermionic atoms in optical lattices. When the $s$-wave scattering lengths for the total spin $S=2,0$ satisfy conditions ${a}_{2}>{a}_{0}>0$, we apply a functional integral approach to the half filled case, where the spin-quadrupole fluctuations dominate. On a two-dimensional square lattice, the saddle-point solution yields a staggered spin-quadrupole ordering at zero temperature with symmetry breaking from SO(5) to SO(4). Both spin and spin-quadrupole static structure factors are calculated, displaying highly anisotropic spin antiferromagnetic fluctuations and antiferroquadrupole long-range correlations, respectively. When Gaussian fluctuations around the saddle point are taken into account, spin-quadrupole density waves with a linear dispersion are derived. Compared with the spin-density waves in the half filled spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Hubbard model, the quadrupole density wave velocity is saturated in the strong-coupling limit, and there are no transverse spin-quadrupole mode couplings, as required by the SO(4) invariance of the effective action. Finally, in the strong-coupling limit of the model Hamiltonian, we derive the effective hyperfine spin-exchange interactions for the Mott insulating phases in the quarter filled and half filled cases, respectively.
