Information capacity of a quantum observable

Abstract

In this paper we consider the classical capacities of quantum-classical channels corresponding to measurement of observables. Special attention is paid to the case of continuous observables. We give formulas for unassisted and entanglement-assisted classical capacities C and C ea and consider some explicitly solvable cases, which give simple examples of entanglement-breaking channels with C < C ea. We also elaborate on the ensemble-observable duality to show that C ea for the measurement channel is related to the χ-quantity for the dual ensemble in the same way as C is related to the accessible information. This provides both accessible information and the χ-quantity for quantum ensembles dual to our examples.

Information capacities of quantum measurement channels

Alexander Semenovich Holevo

We study the relation between the unassisted and entanglement-assisted classical capacities C and C ea of entanglement-breaking channels. We argue that the gain of entanglement assistance C ea / C > 1 generically for measurement channels with unsharp observables; in particular for the measurements with pure posterior states the information loss in the entanglement-assisted protocol is zero, resulting in an arbitrarily large gain for very noisy or weak signal channels. This is illustrated by examples of continuous observables corresponding to state tomography in finite dimensions and heterodyne measurement. In contrast, state preparations are characterized by the property of having no gain of entanglement assistance, C ea / C = 1.

The information capacity of entanglement-assisted continuous variable quantum measurement

Alexander Semenovich Holevo, A A Kuznetsova

Abstract The present paper is devoted to the investigation of the entropy reduction and entanglement-assisted classical capacity (information gain) of continuous variable quantum measurements. These quantities are computed explicitly for multimode Gaussian measurement channels. For this we establish a fundamental property of the entropy reduction of a measurement: under a restriction on the second moments of the input state it is maximized by a Gaussian state (providing an analytical expression for the maximum). In the case of one mode, the gain of entanglement assistance is investigated in detail.

On the Classical Capacity of General Quantum Gaussian Measurement

Alexander Semenovich Holevo

In this paper, we consider the classical capacity problem for Gaussian measurement channels. We establish Gaussianity of the average state of the optimal ensemble in the general case and discuss the Hypothesis of Gaussian Maximizers concerning the structure of the ensemble. Then, we consider the case of one mode in detail, including the dual problem of accessible information of a Gaussian ensemble. Our findings are relevant to practical situations in quantum communications where the receiver is Gaussian (say, a general-dyne detection) and concatenation of the Gaussian channel and the receiver can be considered as one Gaussian measurement channel. Our efforts in this and preceding papers are then aimed at establishing full Gaussianity of the optimal ensemble (usually taken as an assumption) in such schemes.

On classical capacities of infinite-dimensional quantum channels

Alexander Semenovich Holevo, Максим Евгеньевич Широков

A coding theorem for entanglement-assisted communication via an infinite-dimensional quantum channel with linear constraints is extended to a natural degree of generality. Relations between the entanglement-assisted classical capacity and χ-capacity of constrained channels are obtained, and conditions for their coincidence are given. Sufficient conditions for continuity of the entanglement-assisted classical capacity as a function of a channel are obtained. Some applications of the obtained results to analysis of Gaussian channels are considered. A general (continuous) version of the fundamental relation between coherent information and the measure of privacy of classical information transmission via an infinite-dimensional quantum channel is proved.

Gaussian classical-quantum channels: Gain from entanglement-assistance

Alexander Semenovich Holevo

In the present paper we introduce and study Bosonic Gaussian classical-quantum (c-q) channels; embedding of the classical input in quantum input is always possible, and therefore the classical entanglement-assisted capacity C ea under an appropriate input constraint is well defined. We prove the general property of entropy increase for a weak complementary channel, which implies the equality C = C ea (where C is the unassisted capacity) for a certain class of c-q Gaussian channels under an appropriate energy-type constraint. On the other hand, we show by an explicit example that the inequality C < C ea is not unusual for constrained c-q Gaussian channel.

A note on quantum entropy inequalities and channel capacities

Heng Fan

Quantum entropy inequalities are studied. Some quantum entropy inequalities are obtained by several methods. For an entanglement breaking channel, we show that the entanglement-assisted classical capacity is upper bounded by log d . A relationship between entanglement-assisted and one-shot unassisted capacities is obtained. This relationship shows the entanglement-assisted channel capacity is upper bounded by the sum of log d and the one-shot unassisted classical capacity.
