Abstract

It is impossible to unambiguously distinguish the four Bell states in polarization, resorting to linear optical elements only. Recently, the hyperentangled Bell state, the simultaneous entanglement in more than one degree of freedom, has been used to assist in the complete Bell-state analysis of the four Bell states. However, if the additional degree of freedom is qubitlike, one can only distinguish 7 from the group of 16 states. Here we present a way to distinguish the hyperentangled Bell states completely with the help of cross-Kerr nonlinearity. Also, we discuss its application in the quantum teleportation of a particle in an unknown state in two different degrees of freedom and in the entanglement swapping of hyperentangled states. These applications will increase the channel capacity of long-distance quantum communication.

Complete hyperentangled-Bell-state analysis for photon systems assisted by quantum-dot spins in optical microcavities

Bao-Cang Ren, Hai-Rui Wei, Ming Hua +2 more

Bell-state analysis (BSA) is essential in quantum communication, but it is impossible to distinguish unambiguously the four Bell states in the polarization degree of freedom (DOF) of two-photon systems with only linear optical elements, except for the case in which the BSA is assisted with hyperentangled states, the simultaneous entanglement in more than one DOF. Here, we propose a scheme to distinguish completely the 16 hyperentangled Bell states in both the polarization and the spatial-mode DOFs of two-photon systems, by using the giant nonlinear optics in quantum dot-cavity systems. This scheme can be applied to increase the channel capacity of long-distance quantum communication based on hyperentanglement, such as entanglement swapping, teleportation, and superdense coding. We use hyperentanglement swapping as an example to show the application of this HBSA.

Hyperentangled Bell-state analysis

Tzu-Chieh Wei, Julio T. Barreiro, Paul G. Kwiat

It is known that it is impossible to unambiguously distinguish the four Bell states encoded in pairs of photon polarizations using only linear optics. However, hyperentanglement, the simultaneous entanglement in more than one degree of freedom, has been shown to assist the complete Bell analysis of the four Bell states (given a fixed state of the other degrees of freedom). Yet introducing other degrees of freedom also enlarges the total number of Bell-like states. We investigate the limits for unambiguously distinguishing these Bell-like states. In particular, when the additional degree of freedom is qubitlike, we find that the optimal one-shot discrimination schemes are to group the 16 states into seven distinguishable classes, and that an unambiguous discrimination is possible with two identical copies.

Complete hyperentangled Bell state analysis for polarization and time-bin hyperentanglement

Xi-Han Li, Shohini Ghose

We present a complete hyperentangled Bell state analysis protocol for two-photon four-qubit states that are simultaneously entangled in the polarization and time-bin degrees of freedom. The 16 hyperentangled states can be unambiguously distinguished via two steps. In the first step, the polarization entangled state is distinguished deterministically and nondestructively with the help of the cross-Kerr nonlinearity. Then, in the second step, the time-bin state is analyzed with the aid of the polarization entanglement. We also discuss the applications of our protocol for quantum information processing. Compared with hyperentanglement in polarization and spatial-mode degrees of freedom, the polarization and time-bin hyperentangled states provide savings in quantum resources since there is no requirement for two spatial modes for each photon. This is the first complete hyperentangled Bell state analysis scheme for polarization and time-bin hyperentangled states, and it can provide new avenues for high-capacity, long-distance quantum communication.

Complete nondestructive analysis of two-photon six-qubit hyperentangled Bell states assisted by cross-Kerr nonlinearity

Qian Liu, Guan-Yu Wang, Qing Ai +2 more

Hyperentanglement, the entanglement in several degrees of freedom (DOFs) of a quantum system, has attracted much attention as it can be used to increase both the channel capacity of quantum communication and its security largely. Here, we present the first scheme to completely distinguish the hyperentangled Bell states of two-photon systems in three DOFs with the help of cross-Kerr nonlinearity without destruction, including two longitudinal momentum DOFs and the polarization DOF. We use cross-Kerr nonlinearity to construct quantum nondemolition detectors which can be used to make a parity-check measurement and analyze Bell states of two-photon systems in different DOFs. Our complete scheme for two-photon six-qubit hyperentangled Bell-state analysis may be useful for the practical applications in quantum information, especially in long-distance high-capacity quantum communication.

Complete analysis of hyperentangled Bell state in three degrees of freedom using Kerr effect and self-assisted mechanism

Abstract We present an efficient scheme for the complete hyperentangled Bell state analysis (HBSA) of photon system with polarization and two longitudinal momentum degrees of freedom (DOFs), resorting to weak cross-Kerr nonlinearity, linear optical elements and single photon detectors. In the process of distinguishing the 64 hyperentangled Bell states in three DOFs, the self-assisted mechanism is embedded, which makes our scheme simple and realizable. Moreover, we have discussed the applications of this complete HBSA scheme for high-capacity quantum communication protocols that are based on photonic hyperentanglement in three DOFs.

Self-assisted deterministic hyperentangled-Bell-state analysis for polarization and double longitudinal momentum degrees of freedom of photon system

Chang‐Qi Yu, Zheng Zhang, Ji Qi +1 more

Hyperentangled state analysis is an important module in high-capacity quantum communication. We present a self-assisted deterministic hyperentangled-Bell-state analysis (HBSA) scheme for photon system entangled in three degrees of freedom (DOFs), where 64 polarization-double longitudinal momentum hyperentangled Bell states are completely distinguished. In this HBSA scheme, the four first longitudinal momentum Bell states are distinguished determinately by nondestructive first longitudinal momentum Bell state analyzer, which is constructed with cross-Kerr nonlinearity medium. The 16 second longitudinal momentum-polarization hyperentangled Bell states are distinguished determinately by self-assisted second longitudinal momentum-polarization hyperentangled Bell state analyzer using linear optical elements, where the first longitudinal momentum Bell state and time-bin entangled state are used as auxiliary. Using this self-assisted method, the application of nonlinear optical resource in HBSA scheme has been largely reduced, which makes this self-assisted deterministic HBSA scheme has potential application prospects in high-capacity quantum communication.
