Abstract

Entangled states of two ions are realized by using an adiabatic process. Based on the proposal by Linington and Vitanov [Phys. Rev. A 77, 010302 (2008)], we have generated Dicke states in optical qubits of two $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$${}^{+}$ ions by applying frequency-chirped optical pulses with time-dependent envelopes to perform rapid adiabatic passage on sideband transitions. One of the biggest advantages of adiabatic approaches is their robustness against variations in experimental parameters, which is verified by performing experiments for different pulse widths or peak Rabi frequencies. Fidelities exceeding 0.5, which is the threshold for inseparable states, are obtained over wide ranges of parameter values.

Robust generation of superposition states

Rekishu Yamazaki, Ken-ichi Kanda, Fumihiko Inoue +2 more

We describe experimental results of the generation of superposition states in a two-level system, $4s\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}{S}_{1∕2}$ and $3d\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}{D}_{5∕2}$ states, of a single calcium ion. The generation method is based on population transfer via rapid adiabatic passage (RAP), proposed by Vitanov and Shore [Phys. Rev. A 73, 053402 (2006)]. The coherence of the generated superposition state is evaluated with a Ramsey-like interferometry method and a fringe visibility of up to 0.93 is obtained. The state generation shows strong robustness with respect to the RAP pulse parameters, including frequency chirp width and Rabi frequency.

Generation of symmetric Dicke states of many atomic qubits by adiabatic passage

Xinglai Zhang, Y. X. Zhang, Mang Feng

\n We investigate how to deterministically generate symmetric Dicke states of many atomic qubits in a high-Q two-mode optical cavity via dark-state evolution. Our scheme is based on adiabatic evolution, which makes the relevant dynamics insensitive to randomness of the moderate fluctuations of experimental parameters. Assisted by the postselective process, our scheme could be of the fidelity of unity, and robust to imperfect factors such as dissipation, mismatch of cavity parameters, photon loss, and detector inefficiency.\n

Optimizing the preparation of Dicke states using counterdiabatic driving methods

Fengzhe Tang, Gangcheng Wang

Recently, the technique of counterdiabatic driving, which provides an effective strategy for accelerating adiabatic quantum evolution, has been widely applied in the preparation of many-body quantum states. In this work, we propose a theoretical scheme for the efficient preparation of Dicke states in a system of non-interacting two-level atoms. Our approach leverages the one-axis twisting (OAT) interaction to generate non-classical correlations and combines it with time-dependent external fields to achieve precise control over the dynamics of the system. By employing rapid adiabatic passage (RAP), it demonstrates how the system can be steered from an initial coherent spin state to a target Dicke state with high fidelity [S. C. Carrasco, M. H. Goerz, S. A. Malinovskaya, V. Vuletić, W. P. Schleich, and V. S. Malinovsky, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{132}, 153603 (2024)]. To further optimize the preparation process, we introduce counterdiabatic driving (CD), which suppresses non-adiabatic transitions. Numerical simulations confirm that our scheme can achieve high-fidelity Dicke states for a moderate number of particles. Our results provide a scalable and experimentally feasible approach to prepare Dicke states, with potential applications in quantum metrology, quantum communication, and quantum information processing.

Decoherence-free preparation of Dicke states of trapped ions by collective stimulated Raman adiabatic passage

I. E. Linington, Nikolay V. Vitanov

We propose a simple technique for the generation of arbitrary-sized Dicke states in a chain of trapped ions. The method uses global addressing of the entire chain by two pairs of delayed but partially overlapping laser pulses to engineer a collective adiabatic passage along a multi-ion dark state. Our technique, which is a many-particle generalization of the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage technique, is decoherence free with respect to spontaneous emission and robust against moderate fluctuations in the experimental parameters. Furthermore, because the process is very rapid, the effects of heating are almost negligible under realistic experimental conditions. We predict that the overall fidelity of synthesis of a Dicke state involving ten ions sharing two excitations should approach 98% with currently achievable experimental parameters.

Robust state preparation of a single trapped ion by adiabatic passage

C. Wunderlich, Th. Hannemann, T. Körber +5 more

We report adiabatic passage experiments with a single trapped ion. By applying a frequency-chirped laser pulse with a Gaussian amplitude envelope, we reach a transfer efficiency of 0.99(1) on an optical transition from the electronic ground state S1/2 to the metastable state D5/2. This transfer method is shown to be insensitive to the accurate setting of laser parameters, and therefore is suitable as a robust tool for ion-based quantum computing.

Chirped pulse excitation of two-atom Rydberg states

Elena Kuznetsova

Abstract We analyze the excitation of two ground state atoms to a double Rydberg state by a two-photon chirped optical pulse in the regime of adiabatic rapid passage (ARP). For intermediate Rydberg–Rydberg interaction strengths relevant for atoms separated by ∼ten μ m, adiabatic excitation can be achieved at experimentally feasible Rabi frequencies and chirp rates of the pulses, resulting in high transfer efficiencies. We also study the adiabatic transfer between ground and Rydberg states as a means to realize a controlled phase gate between atomic qubits.
