Quantum Stochastic Cocycles and Completely Bounded Semigroups on Operator Spaces

Abstract

An operator space analysis of quantum stochastic cocycles is undertaken. These are cocycles with respect to an ampliated CCR flow, adapted to the associated filtration of subspaces, or subalgebras. They form a noncommutative analog of stochastic semigroups in the sense of Skorohod. One-to-one correspondences are established between classes of cocycle of interest and corresponding classes of one-parameter semigroups on associated matrix spaces. Each of these “global” semigroups may be viewed as the expectation semigroup of an associated quantum stochastic cocycle on the corresponding matrix space. Proof of the two key characterizations, namely that of completely positive contraction cocycles on a C*-algebra, and contraction cocycles on a Hilbert space, involves all of the analysis undertaken here. As indicated by Accardi and Kozyrev, the Schur-action matrix semigroup viewpoint circumvents technical (domain) limitations inherent in the theory of quantum stochastic differential equations.

E-semigroups subordinate to CCR flows

Stephen J. Wills

The subordinate E-semigroups of a fixed E-semigroup α are in one-to-one correspondence with local projection-valued cocycles of α.For the CCR flow we characterise these cocycles in terms of their stochastic generators, that is, in terms of the coefficient driving the quantum stochastic differential equation of Hudson-Parthasarathy type that such cocycles necessarily satisfy. In addition various equivalence relations and order-type relations on E-semigroups are considered, and shown to work especially well in the case of those semigroups subordinate to the CCR flows by exploiting our characterisation.

Quantum random walks

Michał Gnacik

In this thesis we investigate the convergence of various quantum random walks to quantum stochastic cocycles defined on a Bosonic Fock space. We prove a quantum analogue of the Donsker invariance principle by invoking the so-called semigroup representation of quantum stochastic cocycles. In contrast to similar results by other authors our proof is relatively elementary. We also show convergence of products of ampliated random walks with different system algebras; in particular, we give a sufficient condition to obtain a cocycle via products of cocycles. The CCR algebra, its quasifree representations and the corresponding quasifree stochastic calculus are also described. In particular, we study in detail gauge-invariant and squeezed quasifree states. We describe repeated quantum interactions between a `small' quantum system and an environment consisting of an infinite chain of particles. We study different cases of interaction, in particular those which occur in weak coupling limits and low density limits. Under different choices of scaling of the interaction part we show that random walks, which are generated by the associated unitary evolutions of a repeated interaction system, strongly converge to unitary quantum stochastic cocycles. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for such convergence. Furthermore, under repeated quantum interactions, we consider the situation of an infinite chain of identical particles where each particle is in an arbitrary faithful normal state. This includes the case of thermal Gibbs states. We show that the corresponding random walks converge strongly to unitary cocycles for which the driving noises depend on the state of the incoming particles. We also use conditional expectations to obtain a simple condition, at the level of generators, which suffices for the convergence of the associated random walks. Limit cocycles, for which noises depend on the state of the incoming particles, are also obtained by investigating what we refer to as `compressed' random walks. Lastly, we show that the cocycles obtained via the procedure of repeated quantum interactions are quasifree, thus the driving noises form a representation of the relevant CCR algebra. Both gauge-invariant and squeezed representations are shown to occur.

Quantum stochastic convolution cocycles III

J. Martin Lindsay, Adam Skalski

Every Markov-regular quantum Levy process on a multiplier C*-bialgebra is shown to be equivalent to one governed by a quantum stochastic differential equation, and the generating functionals of norm-continuous convolution semigroups on a multiplier C*-bialgebra are then completely characterised. These results are achieved by extending the theory of quantum Levy processes on a compact quantum group, and more generally quantum stochastic convolution cocycles on a C*-bialgebra, to locally compact quantum groups and multiplier C*-bialgebras. Strict extension results obtained by Kustermans, together with automatic strictness properties developed here, are exploited to obtain existence and uniqueness for coalgebraic quantum stochastic differential equations in this setting. Then, working in the universal enveloping von Neumann bialgebra, we characterise the stochastic generators of Markov-regular, *-homomorphic (respectively completely positive and contractive), quantum stochastic convolution cocycles.

How to differentiate a quantum stochastic cocycle

J. Martin Lindsay

Two new approaches to the infinitesimal characterisation of quantum stochastic cocycles are reviewed. The first concerns mapping cocycles on an operator space and demonstrates the role of Hölder continuity; the second concerns contraction operator cocycles on a Hilbert space and shows how holomorphic assumptions yield cocycles enjoying an infinitesimal characterisation which goes beyond the scope of quantum stochastic differential equations.

Quantum flows

Franco Fagnola

We develop a rather general framework for constructing quantum Markov processes through Markov operator cocycles (see Chapter 2, Section 3) that satisfy a quantum stochastic differential equation. In order to achieve this goal we first recall the basic facts of Boson Fock quantum stochastic calculus and then give the fundamental results in the theory of quantum stochastic differential equations concerning existence, uniqueness, time reversal, isometricity and coisometricity of solutions. Next we construct the quantum flow associated with a Markov operator cocycle, and give a condition that guarantees that the restriction to a commutative subalgebra is a commutative flow.

Random-walk approximation to vacuum cocycles

Alexander C. R. Belton

Quantum random walks are constructed on operator spaces with the aid of matrix-space lifting, a type of ampliation intermediate between those provided by spatial and ultraweak tensor products. Using a form of Wiener–Itô decomposition, a Donsker-type theorem is proved, showing that these walks, after suitable scaling, converge in a strong sense to vacuum cocycles: these are vacuum-adapted processes that are Feller cocycles in the sense of Lindsay and Wills. This is employed to give a new proof of the existence of *-homomorphic quantum-stochastic dilations for completely positive contraction semigroups on von Neumann algebras and separable unital C* algebras. The analogous approximation result is also established within the standard quantum stochastic framework, using the link between the two types of adaptedness.
