How to differentiate a quantum stochastic cocycle

Abstract

Two new approaches to the infinitesimal characterisation of quantum stochastic cocycles are reviewed. The first concerns mapping cocycles on an operator space and demonstrates the role of Hölder continuity; the second concerns contraction operator cocycles on a Hilbert space and shows how holomorphic assumptions yield cocycles enjoying an infinitesimal characterisation which goes beyond the scope of quantum stochastic differential equations.

Quantum stochastic operator cocycles via associated semigroups

J. Martin Lindsay, Stephen J. Wills

Abstract A recent characterisation of Fock-adapted contraction operator stochastic cocycles on a Hilbert space, in terms of their associated semigroups, yields a general principle for the construction of such cocycles by approximation of their stochastic generators. This leads to new existence results for quantum stochastic differential equations. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for a cocycle to satisfy such an equation.

Quantum stochastic convolution cocycles

Adam Skalski

A concept of quantum stochastic convolution cocycle is introduced and studied in two different contexts -- purely algebraic and operator space theoretic. A quantum stochastic convolution cocycle is a quantum stochastic process on a coalgebra satisfying the convolution cocycle relation and the initial condition given by the counit. The notion generalises that of quantum Levy process, which in turn is a noncommutative probability counterpart of classical Levy process on a group. Convolution cocycles arise as solutions of quantum stochastic differential equations. In turn every sufficiently regular cocycle satisfies an equation of that type. This is proved along with the corresponding existence and uniqueness of solutions for coalgebraic quantum stochastic differential equations. The stochastic generators of unital *-homomorphic cocycles are characterised in terms of structure maps on a *-bialgebra. This yields a simple proof of the Schurmann Reconstruction Theorem for a quantum Levy process; it also yields a topological version for a quantum Levy process on a C*-bialgebra. Precise characterisation of the stochastic generators of completely positive and contractive quantum stochastic convolution cocycles in the C*-algebraic context is given, leading to some dilation results. A few examples are presented and some interpretations offered for quantum stochastic convolution cocycles and their stochastic generators on different types of *-bialgebra.

Quantum Stochastic Cocycles and Completely Bounded Semigroups on Operator Spaces

J. Martin Lindsay, Stephen J. Wills

An operator space analysis of quantum stochastic cocycles is undertaken. These are cocycles with respect to an ampliated CCR flow, adapted to the associated filtration of subspaces, or subalgebras. They form a noncommutative analog of stochastic semigroups in the sense of Skorohod. One-to-one correspondences are established between classes of cocycle of interest and corresponding classes of one-parameter semigroups on associated matrix spaces. Each of these “global” semigroups may be viewed as the expectation semigroup of an associated quantum stochastic cocycle on the corresponding matrix space. Proof of the two key characterizations, namely that of completely positive contraction cocycles on a C*-algebra, and contraction cocycles on a Hilbert space, involves all of the analysis undertaken here. As indicated by Accardi and Kozyrev, the Schur-action matrix semigroup viewpoint circumvents technical (domain) limitations inherent in the theory of quantum stochastic differential equations.

Quantum flows

Franco Fagnola

We develop a rather general framework for constructing quantum Markov processes through Markov operator cocycles (see Chapter 2, Section 3) that satisfy a quantum stochastic differential equation. In order to achieve this goal we first recall the basic facts of Boson Fock quantum stochastic calculus and then give the fundamental results in the theory of quantum stochastic differential equations concerning existence, uniqueness, time reversal, isometricity and coisometricity of solutions. Next we construct the quantum flow associated with a Markov operator cocycle, and give a condition that guarantees that the restriction to a commutative subalgebra is a commutative flow.
