A non-abelian spin liquid in triangular lattice spin-1 systems was recently formulated in the form of continuum field theory [T. Grover, and T. Senthil, Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 077203 (2011); Cenke Xu, A.W.W. Ludwig, arXiv:1012.5671]. It has spin-1/2 bosonic spinons coupled to emergent quaternion gauge fields, and can be obtained by quantum disordering a non-collinear spin nematic order hypothesized to describe NiGa_2S_4 [H. Tsunetsugu, and M. Arikawa, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 75, 083701 (2006)], However a microscopic lattice description, e.g. the lattice spinon (mean-field) Hamiltonian and the spin wavefunction, has been missing, and it has been noted that the standard Schwinger boson or bosonic triplon representations of spin-1 cannot describe this spin liquid. In this paper a two-orbital Schwinger boson representation for spin-1 systems is developed and used to construct a mean-field description of this quaternion spin liquid. Projecting the mean-field state produces a prototype wavefunction, which is a superposition of close-packed AKLT loop configurations with nontrivial amplitudes. This new formalism and related wavefunctions may be generalized to higher spin systems and can possibly produce spin liquid states with even richer emergent gauge structures.
We introduce an exactly solvable SU(2)-invariant spin-1/2 model with exotic spin excitations. With time reversal symmetry (TRS), the ground state is a spin liquid with gapless or gapped spin-1 but fermionic excitations. When TRS is broken, the resulting spin liquid exhibits deconfined vortex excitations which carry spin-1/2 and obey non-Abelian statistics. We show that this SU(2) invariant non-Abelian spin liquid exhibits the spin quantum Hall effect with quantized spin Hall conductivity σ(xy)(s)=ℏ/2π, and that the spin response is effectively described by the SO(3) level-1 Chern-Simons theory at low energy. We further propose that a SU(2) level-2 Chern-Simons theory is the effective field theory describing the topological structure of the non-Abelian SU(2) invariant spin liquid.
We describe a new class of spin liquids with global SU(2) spin-rotation symmetry in spin-1/2 systems on the triangular lattice, which have real Majorana fermion excitations carrying spin
S=1. The simplest translationally invariant mean-field state on the triangular lattice breaks time-reversal symmetry and is stable to fluctuations. It generically possesses gapless excitations along three Fermi lines in the Brillouin zone. These intersect at a single point where the excitations scale with a dynamic exponent
z=3. An external magnetic field has no orbital coupling to the SU(2) spin-rotation-invariant fermion bilinears that can give rise to a transverse thermal conductivity, thus leading to the absence of a thermal Hall effect. The Zeeman coupling is found to gap out two-thirds of the
z=3 excitations near the intersection point and this leads to a suppression of the low-temperature specific heat, the spin susceptibility, and the Wilson ratio. We also compute physical properties in the presence of weak disorder and discuss possible connections to recent experiments on organic insulators.
Noncollinear magnetic order is typically characterized by a tetrad ground state manifold (GSM) of three perpendicular vectors or nematic directors. We study three types of tetrad orders in two spatial dimensions, whose GSMs are SO(3) = S(3)/Z(2), S(3)/Z(4), and S(3)/Q(8), respectively. Q(8) denotes the non-Abelian quaternion group with eight elements. We demonstrate that after quantum disordering these three types of tetrad orders, the systems enter fully gapped liquid phases described by Z(2), Z(4), and non-Abelian quaternion gauge field theories, respectively. The latter case realizes Kitaev's non-Abelian toric code in terms of a rather simple spin-1 SU(2) quantum magnet. This non-Abelian topological phase possesses a 22-fold ground state degeneracy on the torus arising from the 22 representations of the Drinfeld double of Q(8).
Motivated by recent experiments on material
Ba3NiSb2O9, we propose two novel spin liquid phases (
A and
B) for spin-1 systems on a triangular lattice. At the mean field level, both spin liquid phases have gapless fermionic spinon excitations with quadratic band touching; thus, in both phases the spin susceptibility and $\ensuremath{\gamma}={C}_{v}/T$ saturate to a constant at zero temperature, which are consistent with the experimental results on
Ba3NiSb2O9. On the lattice scale, these spin liquid phases have $\mathrm{Sp}(4)\ensuremath{\sim}\mathrm{SO}(5)$ gauge fluctuation, while in the long wavelength limit this Sp(4) gauge symmetry is broken down to $\mathrm{U}(1)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}$ in the type
A spin liquid phase, and broken down to
Z4 in the type
B phase. We also demonstrate that the
A phase is the parent state of the ferroquadrupole state, nematic state, and the noncollinear spin density wave state.
