Magnetic impurity in a U ( 1 ) spin liquid with a spinon Fermi surface

Abstract

We address the problem of a magnetic impurity in a two-dimensional $U(1)$ spin liquid where the spinons have gapless excitations near the Fermi surface and are coupled to an emergent gapless gauge field. Using a large N expansion, we analyze the strong coupling behavior and obtain the Kondo temperature which was found to be the same as for a Fermi liquid. In this approximation, we also study the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility of the impurity. These quantities present no deviations from the Fermi liquid ones, consistent with the notion that the magnetic impurity is only sensitive to the local density of fermionic states.

Magnetic impurity as a local probe of the U (1) quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surface

Wen‐Yu He, Patrick A. Lee

We solve the problem of a magnetic impurity coupled to a $U(1)$ quantum spin liquid with a spinon Fermi surface, and we compute the impurity spectral function. Using the slave rotor mean-field approach combined with gauge field fluctuations, we find that a peak located at the top of the lower Hubbard band and one at the bottom of the upper Hubbard band can emerge in the impurity spectral function. The peaks at the Hubbard band edges arise from the gauge field fluctuation-induced spinon-chargon binding inside the spinon Kondo screening cloud of the magnetic impurity. For a magnetic impurity embedded in a Mott insulator, our findings suggest that the emergence of a pair of peaks at the Hubbard band edges in the impurity density of states spectra provides strong evidence that the host Mott insulator is a $U(1)$ quantum spin liquid with a spinon Fermi surface.

Overscreened Kondo fixed point in S=1 spin liquid

Maksym Serbyn, T. Senthil, Patrick A. Lee

We propose a possible realization of the overscreened Kondo impurity problem by a magnetic $s=1/2$ impurity embedded in a two-dimensional $S=1$ $U(1)$ spin liquid with a Fermi surface. This problem contains an interesting interplay between non-Fermi-liquid behavior induced by a $U(1)$ gauge field coupled to fermions and a non-Fermi-liquid fixed point in the overscreened Kondo problem. Using a large-$N$ expansion together with an expansion in the dynamical exponent of the gauge field, we find that the coupling to the gauge field leads to weak but observable changes in the physical properties of the system at the overscreened Kondo fixed point. We discuss the extrapolation of this result to a physical case and argue that the realization of overscreened Kondo physics could lead to observations of effects due to gauge fields.

Spinon Kondo lattice in quantum spin liquids

Xia-Ming Zheng, Mehdi Kargarian

Motivated by recent experimental observations of Kondo resonances in cobalt atoms on single layer 1T-TaSe$_{2}$, we theoretically investigate the effect of coupling a U(1) quantum spin liquid with a spinon Fermi surface to a lattice of Anderson impurities. Within the slave-rotor formalism, we find that above a critical coupling strength between the spin liquid and impurity lattice, the spinons hybridize to form heavy quasiparticles near the Fermi level, realizing a {\it spinon Kondo lattice phase} analogous to heavy fermion materials. Using the Bethe-Salpeter equation and accounting for emergent gauge fluctuations, we compute the spectral density and density of states, revealing the formation of spinon-chargon bound states in the spinon Kondo lattice phase. We characterize the thermodynamic and spectroscopic signatures of this phase, demonstrating specific heat and neutron scattering responses distinct from a pure quantum spin liquid. Our findings establish the spinon Kondo lattice as a framework to study the rich physics of spin liquids.

Two-dimensional confinement of critical U(1) gauge field in the presence of Fermi surface

Yin Zhong, Ke Liu, Yong‐Qiang Wang +1 more

The compact U(1) gauge field occurs in many fractionalized descriptions of low dimensional quantum magnetism and heavy fermion systems. In this respect a fundamental question about the gauge field is whether it is confined or not in the presence of Fermi surface. In this paper we show that the U(1) gauge field with a possible positive anomalous dimension in the presence of Fermi surface has to be in the confined state, although it is strongly coupled to abundant gapless fermionic excitations near the Fermi surface in two spatial dimensions. This means that some quantum spin liquids and/or fractionalized metallic states described in terms of this kind of gauge fields with positive anomalous dimensions are unstable to other possible symmetry-breaking states, as a result, they are not be appropriate candidates for ground states in related systems. The instability obtained shows some novel features of the quantum spin liquids and/or fractionalized metallic states in the presence of Fermi surface which have not been reported in the literature. The result could be useful for further study in the quantum spin liquids and many related slave-particle gauge theories in strongly correlated electron systems.

Electronic density of states of a U(1) quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surface. II. Zeeman magnetic field effects

Wen‐Yu He, Patrick A. Lee

This work studies the Zeeman magnetic field effect on a quantum spin liquid with a spinon Fermi surface. In the absence of gauge binding, the quantum spin liquid electronic density of states exhibits no Zeeman shift in the threshold energy. As the gauge binding increases, the band edge resonance peaks exhibit a reduced Zeeman shift and eventually have the Zeeman shift direction reversed for a sufficiently large gauge binding. The authors further suggest to use such anomalous Zeeman response to identify the gapless quantum spin liquid phase.
