Abstract

We investigate phase diffusion of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensates prepared initially in arbitrary coherent spin state $|θ_0,ϕ_0\rangle$. Analytical expression of the phase-diffusion time is presented for $θ_0\neqπ/2$ case. In comparison with the symmetrical case (i.e., $θ_0=π/2$), we find that the diffusion process becomes slowly due to the reduced atom number variance.

Rapid phase-diffusion between atomic and molecular Bose-Einstein condensates

Igor Tikhonenkov, Amichay Vardi

We study the collisional loss of atom-molecule coherence after coherently dissociating a small fraction of a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate into atoms. The obtained $n$-atoms states are two-atom (SU(1,1)) coherent states with number variance $Δn\propto n$ compared to $Δn\propto \sqrt{n}$ for the spin (SU(2)) coherent states formed by coherent splitting of an atomic condensate. Consequently, the Lorentzian atom-molecule phase-diffusion is faster than the Gaussian phase-diffusion between separated atomic condensates, by a $\sqrt{n}$ factor.

Dynamics and Berry phase of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates

Z.-D. Chen, J.-Q. Liang, Shun-Qing Shen +1 more

In terms of exact solutions of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation for an effective giant spin modeled from a coupled two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with adiabatic and cyclic time-varying Raman coupling between two hyperfine states of the BEC, we obtain analytic time-evolution formulas of the population imbalance and relative phase between two components with various initial states, especially the SU(2) coherent state. We find the Berry phase depending on the number parity of atoms, and particle number dependence of the collapse revival of population-imbalance oscillation. It is shown that self-trapping and phase locking can be achieved from initial SU(2) coherent states with proper parameters.

Quantum phase diffusion of a two-component dilute Bose-Einstein condensate

We determine the diffusion rates of two quantum phases associated with a two-component dilute Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that although the phase information of each individual component is lost in the course of time, the relative phase of the two components of the field can be locked without diffusion when the interaction strength between the two components equals certain critical values.

Creation of coherence in Bose-Einstein condensates by atom detection

Péter Horák, Barnett, S M

We investigate the creation of a relative phase between two Bose-Einstein condensates, initially in number states, by detection of atoms and show how the system approaches a coherent state. Two very distinct time scales are found: one for the creation of the interference is of the order of the detection time for a few single atoms and another, for the preparation of coherent states, of the order of the detection time for a significant fraction of the total number of atoms. Approximate analytic solutions are derived and compared with exact numerical results.

Dynamics of quantum phases in a spinor condensate

S. Yi, Özgür Esat Müstecaplıoğlu, Li You

We discuss the quantum phases and their diffusion dynamics in a spinor-1 atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. For ferromagnetic interactions, we obtain the exact ground-state distribution of the phases associated with the total atom number $(N),$ the total magnetization $(\mathcal{M}),$ and the alignment (or hypercharge) (Y) of the system. The mean-field ground state is stable against fluctuations of atom numbers in each of the spin components, and the phases associated with the order parameter for each spin components diffuse while dynamically recovering the two broken continuous symmetries [U(1) and SO(2)] when N and $\mathcal{M}$ are conserved, as in current experiments. We discuss the implications to the quantum dynamics due to an external (homogeneous) magnetic field. We also comment on the case of a spinor-1 condensate with antiferromagnetic interactions.
