Abstract

We study the geometric measure of entanglement (GM) of pure symmetric states related to rank 1 positive-operator-valued measures (POVMs) and establish a general connection with quantum state estimation theory, especially the maximum likelihood principle. Based on this connection, we provide a method for computing the GM of these states and demonstrate its additivity property under certain conditions. In particular, we prove the additivity of the GM of pure symmetric multiqubit states whose Majorana points under Majorana representation are distributed within a half sphere, including all pure symmetric three-qubit states. We then introduce a family of symmetric states that are generated from mutually unbiased bases and derive an analytical formula for their GM. These states include Dicke states as special cases, which have already been realized in experiments. We also derive the GM of symmetric states generated from symmetric informationally complete POVMs (SIC POVMs) and use it to characterize all inequivalent SIC POVMs in three-dimensional Hilbert space that are covariant with respect to the Heisenberg-Weyl group. Finally, we describe an experimental scheme for creating the symmetric multiqubit states studied in this article and a possible scheme for measuring the permanence of the related Gram matrix.

Computation of the geometric measure of entanglement for pure multiqubit states

Lin Chen, Aimin Xu, Huangjun Zhu

We provide methods for computing the geometric measure of entanglement for two families of pure states with both experimental and theoretical interests: symmetric multiqubit states with non-negative amplitudes in the Dicke basis and symmetric three-qubit states. In addition, we study the geometric measure of pure three-qubit states systematically in virtue of a canonical form of their two-qubit reduced states and derive analytical formulas for a three-parameter family of three-qubit states. Based on this result, we further show that the W state is the maximally entangled three-qubit state with respect to the geometric measure.

The maximally entangled symmetric state in terms of the geometric measure

Martin Aulbach, Damian Markham, Mio Murao

The geometric measure of entanglement is investigated for permutation symmetric pure states of multipartite qubit systems, in particular the question of maximum entanglement. This is done with the help of the Majorana representation, which maps an n qubit symmetric state to n points on the unit sphere. It is shown how symmetries of the point distribution can be exploited to simplify the calculation of entanglement and also help find the maximally entangled symmetric state. Using a combination of analytical and numerical results, the most entangled symmetric states for up to 12 qubits are explored and discussed. The optimization problem on the sphere presented here is then compared with two classical optimization problems on the S 2 sphere, namely Tóth's problem and Thomson's problem, and it is observed that, in general, they are different problems.

Additivity and non-additivity of multipartite entanglement measures

Huangjun Zhu, Lin Chen, Masahito Hayashi

We study the additivity property of three multipartite entanglement measures, i.e. the geometric measure of entanglement (GM), the relative entropy of entanglement and the logarithmic global robustness. Firstly, we show the additivity of GM of multipartite states with real and non-negative entries in the computational basis. Many states of experimental and theoretical interest have this property, e.g. Bell diagonal states, maximally correlated generalized Bell diagonal states, generalized Dicke states, the Smolin state and the generalization of Dür's multipartite bound entangled states. We also prove the additivity of the other two measures for some of these examples. Secondly, we show the non-additivity of GM of all antisymmetric states of three or more parties. We also provide a unified explanation of the non-additivity of the three measures of the antisymmetric projector states. In addition, we derive analytical formulae for the three measures of one copy and two copies of the antisymmetric projector states, respectively. Thirdly, we show, with a statistical approach, that almost all multipartite pure states with a sufficiently large number of parties are nearly maximally entangled with respect to GM and relative entropy of entanglement, and they have non-additive GM. Hence, more states may be suitable for universal quantum computation if measurements can be performed on two copies of the resource states. We also show that almost all the multipartite pure states cannot be produced reversibly with the combination of multipartite GHZ states under asymptotic LOCC, unless the relative entropy of entanglement is non-additive for generic multipartite pure states.

Generalized Weyl–Heisenberg Algebra, Qudit Systems and Entanglement Measure of Symmetric States via Spin Coherent States

Mohammed Daoud A, M. Kibler

A relation is established in the present paper between Dicke states in a d-dimensional space and vectors in the representation space of a generalized Weyl–Heisenberg algebra of finite dimension d. This provides a natural way to deal with the separable and entangled states of a system of N = d − 1 symmetric qubit states. Using the decomposition property of Dicke states, it is shown that the separable states coincide with the Perelomov coherent states associated with the generalized Weyl–Heisenberg algebra considered in this paper. In the so-called Majorana scheme, the qudit (d-level) states are represented by N points on the Bloch sphere; roughly speaking, it can be said that a qudit (in a d-dimensional space) is describable by a N-qubit vector (in a N-dimensional space). In such a scheme, the permanent of the matrix describing the overlap between the N qubits makes it possible to measure the entanglement between the N qubits forming the qudit. This is confirmed by a Fubini–Study metric analysis. A new parameter, proportional to the permanent and called perma-concurrence, is introduced for characterizing the entanglement of a symmetric qudit arising from N qubits. For d = 3 ( ⇔ N = 2 ), this parameter constitutes an alternative to the concurrence for two qubits. Other examples are given for d = 4 and 5. A connection between Majorana stars and zeros of a Bargmmann function for qudits closes this article.

Multiqubit symmetric states with high geometric entanglement

John Martin, O. Giraud, Petr A. Braun +2 more

We propose a detailed study of the geometric entanglement properties of pure symmetric $N$-qubit states, focusing more particularly on the identification of symmetric states with a high geometric entanglement and how their entanglement behaves asymptotically for large $N$. We show that much higher geometric entanglement with improved asymptotical behavior can be obtained in comparison with the highly entangled balanced Dicke states studied previously. We also derive an upper bound for the geometric measure of entanglement of symmetric states. The connection with the quantumness of a state is discussed.

CLASSIFICATION OF ENTANGLEMENT IN SYMMETRIC STATES

Martin Aulbach

Quantum states that are symmetric with respect to permutations of their subsystems appear in a wide range of physical settings, and they have a variety of promising applications in quantum information science. In this thesis, the entanglement of symmetric multipartite states is categorized, with a particular focus on the pure multi-qubit case and the geometric measure of entanglement. An essential tool for this analysis is the Majorana representation, a generalization of the single-qubit Bloch sphere representation, which allows for a unique representation of symmetric n-qubit states by n points on the surface of a sphere. Here this representation is employed to search for the maximally entangled symmetric states of up to 12 qubits in terms of the geometric measure, and an intuitive visual understanding of the upper bound on the maximal symmetric entanglement is given. Furthermore, it will be seen that the Majorana representation facilitates the characterization of entanglement equivalence classes such as stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC) and the degeneracy configuration (DC). It is found that SLOCC operations between symmetric states can be described by the Möbius transformations of complex analysis, which allows for a clear visualization of the SLOCC freedoms and facilitates the understanding of SLOCC invariants and equivalence classes. In particular, explicit forms of representative states for all symmetric SLOCC classes of up to five qubits are derived. Well-known entanglement classification schemes such as the four qubit entanglement families or polynomial invariants are reviewed in the light of the results gathered here, which leads to sometimes surprising connections. Some interesting links and applications of the Majorana representation to related fields of mathematics and physics are also discussed.
