Abstract

Abstract We discuss, from a theoretical point of view, the four wave mixing spectroscopy on an ensemble of p‐doped quantum dots in a magnetic field slightly tilted from the in‐plane configuration. We describe the system evolution in the density matrix formalism. In the limit of coherent ultrafast optical driving, we obtain analytical formulas for the single system dynamics and for the response of an inhomogeneously broadened ensemble. The results are compared to the previously studied time‐resolved Kerr rotation spectroscopy on the same system. We show that the Kerr rotation and four wave mixing spectra yield complementary information on the spin dynamics (precession and damping). (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Coherent nonlinear optical response of excitons and biexcitons in quantum dots coupled to phonons

A. Krügel, V. M. Axt, T. Kühn +2 more

Abstract Four wave mixing signals from single dots and dot ensembles involving excitonic and biexcitonic transitions are discussed. The results have been obtained analytically from a four level dot model coupled to longitudinal acoustic phonons. Time integrated four wave mixing amplitudes for quantum dot ensembles exhibit polarization dependent quantum beats that have already been found in experimental data. In four wave mixing signals of single quantum dots we find that the ground state to exciton transition has two contributions. One is identical to the known solution of the two level quantum dot model and leads to symmetric spectra for longer delay times, while the other comprises phase information from the biexciton and results in asymmetric spectra. Four‐wave mixing optical response of an ensemble of quantum dot molecules

Anna Sitek, Paweł Machnikowski

Abstract Four‐wave mixing (FWM) optical response from a sample containing a non‐homogeneously broadened ensemble of vertically stacked pairs of quantum dots is studied theoretically. The effects of collective interaction between the dots and their electromagnetic environment are analyzed. It is shown that the shape of the FWM echo is affected by the coupling between the two dots and, to some extent, by the statistics of the ensemble. In the time‐integrated signal, oscillations on picosecond delay time scale appear which lead to a reduction of the coherent response for coupled dots. For longer delays, the evolution is dominated by radiative decay, with the decay rate increasing from Γ to 2Γ(superradiance effect) as the coupling becomes stronger. Nonlinear optical response and exciton dephasing in quantum dots

E. A. Muljarov, R. Zimmermann

Abstract The full time‐dependent four‐wave mixing polarization in quantum dots is microscopically calculated, taking into account acoustic phonon‐assisted transitions between different exciton states of the dot. It is shown that quite different dephasing times of higher exciton states in pancake anisotropic InGaAs quantum dots are responsible for the experimentally observed [1] double‐exponential decay in the photon echo signal. Dynamical model for coherent optical manipulation of a single spin state in a charged quantum dot

Gabriela M. Slavcheva

Abstract The optically‐induced coherent spin dynamics of a single spin confined in a charged quantum dot (QD) is theoretically studied employing coupled vector Maxwell‐pseudospin formalism. Generalized pseudospin master equation is derived for description of the time evolution of spin coherences and spin populations including spin population transfer and dissipation in the system through spin relaxation processes. The equation is solved in the time domain self‐consistently with the vector Maxwell equations for the optical wave propagation coupled to it via macroscopic medium polarisation. Using the model the long‐lived electron spin coherence left behind a single resonant ultrashort optical excitation of the electron‐trion transition in a charged QD is simulated in the low‐ and high‐intensity Rabi oscillations regime. Signatures of the polarised photoluminescence (PL), predicted by the model, such as the appearance of a second echo pulse after the excitation and characteristic PL trace shape, are discussed for realization of high‐fidelity schemes for coherent readout of a single spin polarisation state. Spin‐dependent dynamics of ultrafast polarised optical pulse propagation in coherent semiconductor quantum systems

Gabriela M. Slavcheva, Ortwin G. Hess

Abstract A new model for rigorous theoretical description of circularly (elliptically) polarised ultrashort optical pulse interactions with the resonant nonlinearities in semiconductor optical waveguides is proposed. The method is based on self‐consistent solution in the time domain of the vector Maxwell equations coupled via microscopic polarisation to the coherent time‐evolution equations of a discrete N‐level quantum system in terms of the real pseudospin (coherence) vector. The model is initially applied to a generic two‐level quantum system and subsequently to a 4‐level system describing the heavy‐hole excitonic transitions in low‐dimensional semiconductor systems, such as quantum wells and quantum dots. Selective optical excitation of specific spin states by predefined helicity of the optical field in the linear regime and an onset of self‐induced transparency and polarised soliton formation in the nonlinear regime are numerically demonstrated in both discrete‐level systems.
