Nonlinear dynamics of double-cavity optical bistability of a three-level ladder system

Abstract

We present nonlinear dynamical features of two-photon double-cavity optical bistability exhibited by a three-level ladder system in the mean-field limit at low input light levels. The system exhibits a hump-like feature in the lower branch of the bistable response, wherein a region of instability develops. The system displays a range of dynamical features varying from normal stable switching to periodic self-pulsing and chaos. The inclusion of two competing cooperative atom-field couplings leads to such rich, nonlinear dynamical behavior. We provide a domain map that clearly delineates the various regions of stability, as well as bifurcation diagrams with associated supporting evidence that identifies the period-doubling route to chaos.

Negative and positive hysteresis in double-cavity optical bistability in a three-level atom

H. Aswath Babu, Harshawardhan Wanare

We present dual hysteretic behavior of a three-level ladder system exhibiting optical bistability in a double-cavity configuration in the mean-field limit. The two fields coupling the atomic system experience competing cooperative effects along the two transitions. We observe a hump-like feature in the bistable curve arising due to cavity-induced inversion, which transforms into a negative-hysteresis loop. Apart from negative- and positive-hysteresis regions, the system offers a variety of controllable nonlinear dynamical features, ranging from switching, periodic self-pulsing to chaos.

Optical Bistability, Chaos in the Coherent Two Photon Processes:

G. S. Agarwal, Surendra Singh

The cooperative behavior of a system of atoms contained in a ring cavity is investigated under the condition that the fundamental atomic transition is a two photon transition1. Maxwell-Block equations are used to obtain the input vs. output relation by adiabatically eliminating all the atomic variables. The fundamental equation that results is a complex two dimensional map--which in the mean field limit reduces to the standard bistability equations. The characteristics of the two dimensional map are numerically investigated. Such a map is shown to lead to chaotic behavior following the Feigenbaum2 scenario. The sequence of events following first regime of chaos is a set of period halving bifurcations. The characteristics of the power spectrum in the region of chaos are presented. The effect of noise on the period doubling bifurcations in the present model, is also investigated and the connection with the theoretical predictions3 is established. The changes in the dynamical characteristics of the system when atomic inversion relaxes on the same time scale as the cavity round trip time will also be discussed in detail.

Dynamic Equations and Nonlinear Dynamics of Cascade Two-Photon Laser

Xie Xia, Huang Hong-Bin, Qian Feng +3 more

We derive equations and study nonlinear dynamics of cascade two-photon laser, in which the electromagnetic field in the cavity is driven by coherently prepared three-level atoms and classical field injected into the cavity. The dynamic equations of such a system are derived by using the technique of quantum Langevin operators, and then are studied numerically under different driving conditions. The results show that under certain conditions the cascade two-photon laser can generate chaotic, period doubling, periodic, stable and bistable states. Chaos can be inhibited by atomic populations, atomic coherences, and injected classical field. In addition, no chaos occurs in optical bistability.

Non-equilibrium dynamics of a nonlinear Jaynes–Cummings model in cavity arrays

Jiří Minář, Şebnem Güneş Söyler, Igor Lesanovsky

We analyze in detail an open cavity array using mean-field description, where each cavity field is coupled to a number of three-level atoms. Such a system is highly tunable and can be described by a Jaynes–Cummings like Hamiltonian with additional nonlinear terms. In the single cavity case we provide simple analytic solutions and show, that the system features a bistable region. The extra nonlinear term gives rise to a rich dynamical behavior including occurrence of limit cycles through Hopf bifurcations. In the limit of large nonlinearity, the system exhibits an Ising like phase transition as the coupling between light and matter is varied. We then discuss how these results extend to the two-dimensional case.

Coherent control of the refractive index using optical bistability

H. Aswath Babu, Harshawardhan Wanare

Refractive index and absorption experienced by a probe field propagating through a three-level atomic medium can be effectively manipulated by the bistable behavior of a control field. The probe field couples the lower transition of the atom in a ladder configuration and experiences normal or anomalous dispersion depending on the control field being in the upper or lower bistable state, respectively. We also obtain nonlinear dynamical instability in the form of periodic self-pulsing as the lower bistable branch becomes unstable, quite unlike earlier demonstrations of an unstable regime in the upper branch. Consequently, the susceptibility experienced by the probe field varies periodically in time as dictated by the control field self-pulsing.

Stability properties of a resonant cascade laser

Germán J. de Valcárcel, Eugenio Roldán, Ramon A. Vilaseca

The emission of a resonant nondegenerate cascade laser in which up to two fields can be simultaneously amplified inside a cavity is theoretically investigated. Each field is resonantly coupled with one of the transitions of a ladder three-level atomic system, in conditions of homogeneous broadening. General analytical expressions for zero-, one-, and two-field solutions are given. Cooperative emission between both fields is found. Through the linear stability analysis of these solutions we obtain phase diagrams showing their respective domains of stability. Together with the existence of Hopf bifurcations associated with one-photon processes, which coincide with those of a Lorenz-Haken laser, a genuine Hopf bifurcation due to two-photon processes has been found. This last bifurcation does not require the ``bad cavity'' nor the ``Lorenz threshold'' conditions. The stability of the orbits that bifurcate from these critical points is analytically investigated. For this we have rewritten one of the standard criteria in a useful and straightforward way. Finally, the dynamic regimes exhibited by the system well above the instability thresholds is numerically investigated revealing transitions to chaos via quasiperiodicity.
