Negative and positive hysteresis in double-cavity optical bistability in a three-level atom

Abstract

We present dual hysteretic behavior of a three-level ladder system exhibiting optical bistability in a double-cavity configuration in the mean-field limit. The two fields coupling the atomic system experience competing cooperative effects along the two transitions. We observe a hump-like feature in the bistable curve arising due to cavity-induced inversion, which transforms into a negative-hysteresis loop. Apart from negative- and positive-hysteresis regions, the system offers a variety of controllable nonlinear dynamical features, ranging from switching, periodic self-pulsing to chaos.

Nonlinear dynamics of double-cavity optical bistability of a three-level ladder system

H. Aswath Babu, Harshawardhan Wanare

We present nonlinear dynamical features of two-photon double-cavity optical bistability exhibited by a three-level ladder system in the mean-field limit at low input light levels. The system exhibits a hump-like feature in the lower branch of the bistable response, wherein a region of instability develops. The system displays a range of dynamical features varying from normal stable switching to periodic self-pulsing and chaos. The inclusion of two competing cooperative atom-field couplings leads to such rich, nonlinear dynamical behavior. We provide a domain map that clearly delineates the various regions of stability, as well as bifurcation diagrams with associated supporting evidence that identifies the period-doubling route to chaos.

Double-cavity optical bistability and all-optical switching in four-level N-type atomic system

Yu-Yuan Chen, Yanan Li, Ren-Gang Wan

We analyze the absorptive and hybrid absorptive–dispersive double-cavity optical bistability behavior in a four-level N-type atomic system driven by two optical fields circulating inside two independently unidirectional ring cavities and a trigger field outside the cavities. In this system, the two-photon absorption and cross Kerr nonlinearity play significant roles in the formation of bistability and can be controlled efficiently due to the quantum interference effect, and then the resulting nonlinear behavior exhibits different features from the two/three-level schemes. It is shown that the threshold values and hysteresis cycle width of the bistable curve can be manipulated via the adjustment of the system parameters. Meanwhile, we also obtain double-beam optical multistability. When adding positive and negative pulses to the cavity input, all-optical steady-state switching for the two cavity outputs can be achieved simultaneously. Therefore, the proposed scheme may have potential applications in all-optical communication and computing.

Controlling the shape and direction of hysteresis cycle in an optical bistability system with three-level atoms

Amitabh Joshi, Wenge Yang, Min Xiao

We experimentally demonstrate ‘backward’ hysteresis loop in optical bistability from an optical ring cavity containing three-level (Λ-type) rubidium atoms. Switching from ‘backward’ to normal hysteresis loop can be controlled by coupling field and cavity detuning.

Dynamic all-optical memory switching based on atomic optical bistable behavior in a three level Λ-type atomic system

Haiqiang He, Bixuan Fan, Min Xie

Abstract We theoretically investigate the atomic optical bistability (AOB) in a three-level Λ-type atomic system confined in a unidirectional optical ring cavity. The role of the intensity or detuning of the control field on AOB is explored, and results show that absorption, dispersion, and nonlinearity can be modified significantly by the control field due to quantum coherence and interference in multilevel atomic systems. Thus, tuning the intensity or detuning of the control field can manipulate the switch-up and switch-down thresholds, as well as the area of the bistable hysteresis loop. According to the controllability of AOB, we design various schemes to realize dynamical all-optical switching between the high and low outputs of two bistable curves for a fixed cavity input. In addition, dynamical all-optical memory switching can be implemented by adding a pulse sequence for the intensity or detuning of the control field. For appropriate parameters, such as the cooperative coefficient, the extinction ratio of the switching can be improved dramatically.

Control of optical bistability in the nonlinear regime of two-sided cavity quantum electrodynamics

Liyong Wang, Zheng Tan, Yifu Zhu +1 more

We investigate the optical bistability behavior of a two-sided cavity quantum electrodynamics system. The nonlinear input–output relation of the atom–cavity system coupled by two input light fields from two ends of the cavity can be controlled by a control light from the free space. Different from the common optical bistability phenomenon in the atom–cavity system, two separate bistability regions are observed. The bistability threshold and hysteresis loop can be well controlled by the control light. Because of field interference, the output light intensity becomes different with varying the relative phase of two incident fields. The output field intensity at the threshold of the first bistability region approaches zero with either increasing the detuning or lowering the intensity of the control light; thus, the perfect photon absorption condition is extended and a broadband near-perfect photon absorber is realized. Furthermore, we show an asymmetrical transmission feature due to field interference.

Investigating the impact of correlated white noises on the bistability behavior in an optical three-level bistable system

Tayebeh Naseri, Rasoul Sadighi‐Bonabi

The effect of correlated white noises on the optical bistability behavior of three-level atomic systems is theoretically investigated. Noise-induced bistability is demonstrated in an atomic optical bistable system consisting of three-level atoms in Λ-type configurations confined in an optical ring cavity. The output field as a result of enhanced Kerr nonlinearity induced by atomic coherence in the electromagnetically induced transparency system is variable due to the noises in laser parameters and the cooperativity parameter. Therefore, noise is mainly responsible for such induced bistability in the system. It is found that with the cross-correlation noises, the hysteresis loop of optical bistability can be clearly expanded in comparison with the deterministic case and the atomic system could show multistability behavior. This is specifically considerable for positive cross-correlated noises where it could expand the domain of the hysteresis loop. In the presented atomic system the numerical result shows that noise can induce bistability in the absence of spontaneously generated coherence. Furthermore, it is salient that the noise could induce bistability when the system is below its deterministic threshold for bistability.
