Abstract

We discuss the topical and fundamental problem of strong-coupling between a quantum dot an the single mode of a microcavity. We report seminal quantitative descriptions of experimental data, both in the linear and in the nonlinear regimes, based on a theoretical model that includes pumping and quantum statistics.

Quantitative Description of Strong-Coupling of Quantum Dots in Microcavities

Fabrice P. Laussy, Elena del Valle, C. Tejedor +2 more

We have recently developed a self‐consistent theory of Strong‐Coupling in the presence of an incoherent pumping [arXiv:0807.3194] and shown how it could reproduce quantitatively the experimental data [PRL, 101 (2008)]. Here, we summarize our main results, provide the detailed analysis of the fitting of the experiment and discuss how the field should now evolve beyond merely qualitative expectations, that could well be erroneous even when they seem to be firmly established.

Strong Coupling of Quantum Dots in Microcavities

Fabrice P. Laussy, Elena del Valle, C. Tejedor

We show that strong coupling (SC) of light and matter as it is realized with quantum dots in microcavities differs substantially from the paradigm of atoms in optical cavities. The type of pumping used in semiconductors yields new criteria to achieve SC, with situations where the pump hinders, or on the contrary, favors it. We analyze one of the seminal experimental observation of SC of a quantum dot in a pillar microcavity [Reithmaier, Nature (London) 432, 197 (2004)10.1038/nature02969] as an illustration of our main statements.

Photoluminescence from Microcavities Strongly Coupled to Single Quantum Dots

A. Ridolfo, Omar Di Stefano, S. Portolan +1 more

e study theoretically, the photoluminescence properties of a single quantum dot in a microcavity under incoherent excitation. We propose a microscopic quantum statistical approach providing a Lindblad (thus completely positive) description of pumping and decay mechanisms of the quantum dot and of the cavity mode. Our analytical results show that strong coupling (SC) and linewidths are largely independent on the pumping intensity (until saturation effects come into play), in contrast to previous theoretical findings. We shall show the reliable predicting character of our theoretical framework in the analysis of various recent experiments.

Optical spectra of a quantum dot in a microcavity in the nonlinear regime

Elena del Valle, Fabrice P. Laussy, Fabricio Macedo de Souza +1 more

The optical emission spectrum of a quantum dot in strong coupling with the single mode of a microcavity is obtained in the nonlinear regime. We study how exciton-exciton interactions alter the emission spectrum of the system, bringing the linear Rabi doublet into a multiplet structure that is strongly dependent on the cavity-exciton energy detuning. We emphasize how nonlinearity can be used to evidence the genuine quantum nature of the coupling by producing satellites peaks of the Rabi doublet that originate from the quantized energy levels of the interactions.

Optically controlled quantum correlations for a quantum dot – microcavity system

J. P. Restrepo Cuartas, K. M. Fonseca-Romero, Herbert Vinck-Posada

We present a theoretical model of a quantum dot interacting with one microcavity mode. We show that in this three-level system two strong coupling regimes exist and they can be manipulated by the classical interaction.

Luminescence spectra of quantum dots in microcavities. III. Multiple quantum dots

Fabrice P. Laussy, Arne Laucht, Elena del Valle +2 more

We discuss the spectral line shapes of $N$ quantum dots in strong coupling with the single mode of a microcavity in the presence of a continuous, incoherent pumping. Nontrivial features in the response of the system are induced by detuning the emitters or probing the direct exciton emission spectrum. We describe dark states, quantum nonlinearities, emission dips, and interferences and show how these various effects may coexist, giving rise to highly peculiar line shapes.
