Abstract

Through Variational Monte Carlo simulation we show the d-wave RVB pairing in the Heisenberg model on triangular lattice can be better described in terms of a two component order parameter. The fully gapped chiral d-wave RVB state, which is predicted by the mean field theory to be the unique minimum of variational energy in the two dimensional representation space of d-wave pairing, is found to be actually a local maximum and the true minimum of energy is reached by the non-chiral $d_{xy}$ state with line nodes. We also find that the usual Gutzwiller approximation, which enjoys great success for the square lattice system, fails badly on the triangular lattice as a result of the geometric frustration inherent of the system. An improved version of the Gutzwiiler approximation is proposed and is found to give a much better results than the usual one.

OPTIMIZING THE RVB STATE ON A TRIANGULAR LATTICE: PRESENCE OF THE LONG RANGE ORDER

Yong-Cong Chen

We present a Schwinger boson approach for the RVB state of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice. It is shown that a Gutzwiller projection of the mean field state that includes both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic decouplings leads to optimizing the RVB pair amplitudes within a self-consistent approximation. The resulting state yields, by Monte Carlo simulations, energies and spin-spin correlations in excellent agreement with the exact diagonalization result on finite lattices (up to 36 sites). We conclude that the optimized RVB wave function possesses a long range three-sublattice order.

Chiral d-wave RVB state on honeycomb lattice as a generalized staggered flux phase

Tao Li

We show the chiral d-wave RVB state on honeycomb lattice stands as a natural generalization of the staggered flux phase on square lattice. Although the state is generated from a time reversal symmetry broken mean field ansatz, it actually represents a fully symmetric spin liquid state with a positive definite wave function in the sense of Marshall sign rule for unfrustrated antiferromagnets. The evolution of the state with the parameter $Δ/χ$ follows exactly the same manner as that of the staggered flux phase on square lattice. The critical pairing strength corresponding to the $π$-flux phase is found to be $Δ/χ=\sqrt{2}$. As a result of the geometric frustration between neighboring plaquette on honeycomb lattice, a direct generalization of the U(1) staggered flux pattern on square lattice to honeycomb lattice is impossible. Replacing it is the chiral d-wave state with $Z_{2}$ gauge structure. However, this $Z_{2}$ gauge structure is found to be ineffective after Gutzwiller projection and the system does not support topological degeneracy. The chiral d-wave RVB state is also found to be a rather good variational state for the Heisenberg model on honeycomb lattice. The spin correlation of the chiral d-wave state is found to be greatly enhanced as compared to the mean field prediction.

Variational Monte Carlo study of chiral spin liquid in quantum antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice

Wen-Jun Hu, Shou-Shu Gong, D. N. Sheng

By using Gutzwiller projected fermionic wave functions and variational Monte Carlo technique, we study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model with the first-neighbor (${J}_{1}$), second-neighbor (${J}_{2}$), and additional scalar chiral interaction ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}{\mathbf{S}}_{i}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}({\mathbf{S}}_{j}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbf{S}}_{k})$ on the triangular lattice. In the nonmagnetic phase of the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ triangular model with $0.08\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.16$, recent density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies [Zhu and White, Phys. Rev. B 92, 041105(R) (2015) and Hu, Gong, Zhu, and Sheng, Phys. Rev. B 92, 140403(R) (2015)] find a possible gapped spin liquid with the signal of a competition between a chiral and a ${Z}_{2}$ spin liquid. Motivated by the DMRG results, we consider the chiral interaction ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}{\mathbf{S}}_{i}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}({\mathbf{S}}_{j}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbf{S}}_{k})$ as a perturbation for this nonmagnetic phase. We find that with growing ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}$, the gapless U(1) Dirac spin liquid, which has the best variational energy for ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}=0$, exhibits the energy instability towards a gapped spin liquid with nontrivial magnetic fluxes and nonzero chiral order. We calculate topological Chern number and ground-state degeneracy, both of which identify this flux state as the chiral spin liquid with fractionalized Chern number $C=1/2$ and twofold topological degeneracy. Our results indicate a positive direction to stabilize a chiral spin liquid near the nonmagnetic phase of the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ triangular model.

RVB States for Tow-Dimensional Antiferromagnets

Makoto Inoue, Tetsuhiko Chikyu, Xiao Hu +1 more

The ground states of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular and square lattices are discussed with use of the combinatorial method on the basis of Anderson's RVB (resonating-valence-bond) variational wave-function. Some properties of RVB states are studied systematically for finite system-size N up to 20 and are compared to the exact values. For the triangular lattice the estimated energy value E RVB =-2.08 is closer to the exact value than that of the spin-wave theory. The value E RVB =-2.36 is estimated for the square lattice. For the square lattice our RVB state is closer to the exact ground state than the Néel state is in the sense of a wave-function. The dimer problem has a close relation to RVB states and is used to count exactly the number of singlet-pair configurations.

Chiral superconductivity in the doped triangular-lattice Fermi-Hubbard model in two dimensions

Vinicius Zampronio, Tommaso Macrì

The triangular-lattice Fermi-Hubbard model has been extensively investigated in the literature due to its connection to chiral spin states and unconventional superconductivity. Previous simulations of the ground state of the doped system rely on quasi-one-dimensional lattices where true long-range order is forbidden. Here we simulate two-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional triangular lattices using state-of-the-art Auxiliary-Field Quantum Monte Carlo. Upon doping a non-magnetic chiral spin state, we observe evidence of chiral superconductivity supported by long-range order in Cooper-pair correlation and a finite value of the chiral order parameter. With this aim, we first locate the transition from the metallic to the non-magnetic insulating phase and the onset of magnetic order. Our results pave the way towards a better understanding of strongly correlated lattice systems with magnetic frustration.

Variational study of the quantum phase transition in the bilayer Heisenberg model with bosonic RVB wavefunction

Haijun Liao, Tao Li

We study the ground state phase diagram of the bilayer Heisenberg model on a square lattice with a bosonic resonating valence bond (RVB) wavefunction. The wavefunction has the form of a Gutzwiller projected Schwinger boson mean-field ground state and involves two variational parameters. We find the wavefunction provides an accurate description of the system on both sides of the quantum phase transition. In particular, through the analysis of the spin structure factor, ground state fidelity susceptibility and the Binder moment ratio Q(2), a continuous transition from the antiferromagnetic ordered state to the quantum disordered state is found at the critical coupling of α(c) = J(⊥)/J(∥) ≈ 2.62, in good agreement with the result of quantum Monte Carlo simulation. The critical exponent estimated from the finite size scaling analysis (1/ν ≈ 1.4) is consistent with that of the classical 3D Heisenberg universality class.
