Abstract

We study the magnetic ordering transition for a system of harmonically trapped ultracold fermions with repulsive interactions in a cubic optical lattice, within a real-space extension of dynamical mean-field theory. Using a quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver, we establish that antiferromagnetic correlations are signaled, at strong coupling, by an enhanced double occupancy. This signature is directly accessible experimentally and should be observable well above the critical temperature for long-range order. Dimensional aspects appear less relevant than naively expected.

Antiferromagnetism of Repulsively Interacting Fermions in a Harmonic Trap

Qi Jian-Qing, Wang Lei, Xi Dai

We propose a real-space Gutzwiller variational approach and apply it to a system of repulsively interacting ultracold fermions with spin-½ trapped in an optical lattice with a harmonic confinement. Using the real-space Gutzwiller variational approach, we find that in a system with balanced spin-mixtures on a square lattice, antiferromagnetism either appears in a checkerboard pattern or forms a ring, and the antiferromagnetic order is stable in the regions where the particle density is close to one, which is consistent with the recent results obtained by the real-space dynamical mean-field theory approach. We also investigate the imbalanced case and find that the antiferromagnetic order is suppressed there.

Magnetic ordering of three-component ultracold fermionic mixtures in optical lattices

Andrii Sotnikov, Walter Hofstetter

We study finite-temperature magnetic phases of three-component mixtures of ultracold fermions with repulsive interactions in optical lattices with simple cubic or square geometry by means of dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We focus on the case of one particle per site (1/3 band filling) at moderate interaction strength, where we observe a sequence of thermal phase transitions into two- and three-sublattice ordered states by means of the unrestricted real-space generalization of DMFT. From our quantitative analysis we conclude that long-range ordering in three-component mixtures should be observable at comparable temperatures as in two-component mixtures.

Double occupancy as a universal probe for antiferromagnetic correlations and entropy in cold fermions on optical lattices

Elena V. Gorelik, Thereza Paiva, Richard T. Scalettar +2 more

We verify signatures of antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations in the double occupancy D [Gorelik et al., PRL 105, 065301 (2010)] and study their dimensional dependence using direct quantum Monte Carlo in dimensions d=2,3 and Bethe Ansatz in d=1. We find quantitative agreement with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) in the cubic case and qualitative agreement down to d=1. As a function of entropy s=S/(N k_B), D is nearly universal with respect to d; the minimum in D(s) approaches s=log(2) at strong coupling, as predicted by DMFT. Long-range order appears hardly relevant for the current search of AF signatures in cold fermions. Thus, experimentalists need not achieve s

Advantages of Mass-Imbalanced Ultracold Fermionic Mixtures for Approaching Quantum Magnetism in Optical Lattices

Andrii Sotnikov, Daniel Cocks, Walter Hofstetter

We study magnetic phases of two-component mixtures of ultracold fermions with repulsive interactions in optical lattices in the presence of hopping imbalance. Our analysis is based on dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and its real-space generalization at finite temperature. We study the temperature dependence of the transition into the ordered state as a function of the interaction strength and the imbalance parameter in two and three spatial dimensions. We show that below the critical temperature for Néel order mass-imbalanced mixtures also exhibit a charge-density wave, which provides a directly observable signature of the ordered state. For the trapped system, we compare our results obtained by real-space DMFT to a local-density approximation. We calculate the entropy for a wide range of parameters and identify regions, in which mass-imbalanced mixtures could have clear advantages over balanced ones for the purpose of obtaining and detecting quantum magnetism.

Canted antiferromagnetic order of imbalanced Fermi-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices by dynamical mean-field theory

Michiel Snoek, Irakli Titvinidze, Walter Hofstetter

We investigate antiferromagnetic order of repulsively interacting fermionic atoms in an optical lattice by means of dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Special attention is paid to the case of an imbalanced mixture. We take into account the presence of an underlying harmonic trap, both in a local-density approximation and by performing full real-space DMFT calculations. We consider the case in which the particle density in the trap center is at half-filling, leading to an antiferromagnetic region in the center, surrounded by a Fermi liquid region at the edge. In the case of an imbalanced mixture, the antiferromagnetism is directed perpendicular to the ferromagnetic polarization and canted. We pay special attention to the boundary structure between the antiferromagnetic and the Fermi liquid phase. For the moderately strong interactions considered here, no Stoner instability toward a ferromagnetic phase is found. Phase separation is only observed for strong imbalance and sufficiently large repulsion.

Antiferromagnetic order of strongly interacting fermions in a trap: real-space dynamical mean-field analysis

Michiel Snoek, Irakli Titvinidze, Csaba Tőke +2 more

We apply dynamical mean-field theory to strongly interacting fermions in an inhomogeneous environment. With the help of this real-space dynamical mean-field theory (R-DMFT) we investigate antiferromagnetic states of repulsively interacting fermions with spin- in a harmonic potential. Within R-DMFT, antiferromagnetic order is found to be stable in spatial regions with total particle density close to one, but persists also in parts of the system where the local density significantly deviates from half filling. In systems with spin imbalance, we find that antiferromagnetism is gradually suppressed and phase separation emerges beyond a critical value of the spin imbalance.
