The Gross-Pitaevskii Soliton: Relating Weakly and Strongly Repulsive Bosonic condensates and the magnetic soliton

Abstract

We show that the dark soliton of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) that describes the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) density of a system of weakly repulsive bosons, also describes that of a system of strongly repulsive hard core bosons at half filling. This connection establishes a relationship between the GPE soliton and the magnetic soliton of an easy-plane ferromagnet, where the BEC density relates to the square of the in-plane magnetization of the system. This mapping between well known solitons in two distinct physical systems provides an intuitive understanding of various characteristics of the solitons.

Particle-Hole Asymmetry and Brightening of Solitons in a Strongly Repulsive Bose-Einstein Condensate

Radha Balakrishnan, Indubala I. Satija, Charles W. Clark

We study solitary wave propagation in the condensate of a system of hard-core bosons with nearest-neighbor interactions. For this strongly repulsive system, the evolution equation for the condensate order parameter of the system, obtained using spin-coherent state averages, is different from the usual Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE). The system is found to support two kinds of solitons when there is a particle-hole imbalance: a dark soliton that dies out as the velocity approaches the sound velocity and a new type of soliton which brightens and persists all the way up to the sound velocity, transforming into a periodic wave train at supersonic speed. Analogous to the GPE soliton, the energy-momentum dispersion for both solitons is characterized by Lieb II modes.

Spatial solitons of trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate

Xu SiLIiu, Chen ShunFang

We present two families analytical solutions to the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), which describe the dynamics of bright and dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensations(BECs) with varying coefficients of two and three-body interactions in a parabolic and complex potential. The properties of the dynamical evolutions of the bright and dark matter-wave solitons are investigated. It is interesting that the matter-wave can be controlled by applying the external magnetic field and a background.

Many-body dark solitons in one-dimensional hard-core Bose gases

Manuele Tettamanti, Alberto Parola

The existence and stability of solitonic states in one-dimensional repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates is investigated within a fully many-body framework by considering the limit of infinite repulsion (Tonks-Girardeau gas). A class of stationary, shape-invariant states propagating at constant velocity are explicitly found and compared to the known solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The typical features attributed to nonlinearity are thus recovered in a purely linear theory, provided the full many-particle physics is correctly accounted for. However, the formation dynamics predicted by the Gross-Pitaevskii approximation considerably differs from the exact many-body evolution.

Bright and Dark Solitons and Breathers in Strongly Repulsive Bose-Einstein Condensates

William P. Reinhardt, Indubala I. Satija, Bryce Robbins +1 more

Collisional dynamics of solitary matter waves of superfluid hard core bosons, consisting of dark and bright non-linear waves as well as supersonic periodic trains, reveals remarkable richness and coherence, with the phase of the condensate playing a key role. Depending upon the condensate density and their relative velocity, two distinctive collisional types emerge: the intuitively expected repulsive collisions due to the hard core boson constraint; and, also collisions in which they "pass through" one another. In addition to confirming the soliton status of both bright and dark solitary waves, our studies reveal a variety of multi-solitons including multiple families of breathers, that can be produced and precisely controlled via quantum phase engineering.

Dark Solitons in F=1 Spinor Bose–Einstein Condensate

Masaru Uchiyama, Jun’ichi Ieda, Miki Wadati

We study dark soliton solutions of a multi-component Gross--Pitaevskii equation for hyperfine spin F=1 spinor Bose--Einstein condensate. The interactions are supposed to be inter-atomic repulsive and anti-ferromagnetic ones of equal magnitude. The solutions are obtained from those of an integrable $2\times 2$ matrix nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonvanishing boundary conditions. We investigate the one-soliton and two-soliton solutions in detail. One-soliton is classified into two kinds. The ferromagnetic state has wavefunctions of domain-wall shape and its total spin is nonzero. The polar state provides a hole soliton and its total spin is zero. These two states are selected by choosing the type of the boundary conditions. In two-soliton collisions, we observe the spin-mixing or spin-transfer. It is found that, as "magnetic" carriers, solitons in the ferromagnetic state are operative for the spin-mixing while those in the polar are passive.

Stability of Spin-Wave Solitons in Bose-Einstein Condensates of Magnons: A Possible Application in Ferromagnetic Films

Lucas Carvalho Pereira, Valter Aragão do Nascimento

In this paper, we theoretically investigate the stability of spin-wave solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates of repulsive magnons, confined by an inhomogeneous external magnetic field described by a Gaussian well. For this purpose, we use the quasi-one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation to describe the behavior of the condensate. In order to solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we used two different approaches: one analytical (variational method) and another numerical (split-step Crank-Nicolson method). The stability of the solutions and the validation of the numerical results were confirmed, respectively, through the anti-VK criterion and the virial theorem. Furthermore, the simulations described the behavior of physical quantities of interest such as chemical potential, energy per magnon and central density as a function of the nonlinearity of the model (magnon-magnon interactions). The theoretical results provide subsidies for a better understanding of the nonlinear phenomena related to the Bose-Einstein condensates of magnons in ferromagnetic films.
