Abstract

We present an analytical treatment of coherent excitation of a two-level atom driven by a far-off-resonant classical field. A class of pulse envelope is obtained for which this problem is exactly solvable. The solutions are given in terms of the Heun function, which is a generalization of the hypergeometric function. Degeneracy of the Heun to a hypergeometric equation can give all the exactly solvable pulse shapes of Gauss hypergeometric form from the generalized pulse shape obtained here. We discuss the application of the results obtained to the generation of soft x-ray and ultraviolet radiations.

Few-cycle excitation of atomic coherence: an analytical solution beyond the rotating-wave approximation

Nazar Pyvovar, Bing Zeng, Lingze Duan

Abstract Developing an analytical theory for atomic coherence driven by ultrashort laser pulses has proved to be challenging due to the breakdown of the rotating wave approximation (RWA). In this paper, we present an approximate analytical solution that describes a two-level atom under the excitation of a far-off-resonance, few-cycle pulse of arbitrary shape without invoking the RWA. As an example of its applicability, a closed-form solution for Gaussian pulses is explicitly given, and the result is used to analyse the impact of carrier envelope phase on atomic population ratios. Comparisons with numerical solutions validate the accuracy our solution within the scope of the approximation. Finally, we outline an alternative approach that can lead to a more accurate solution by capturing the nonlinear behaviors of the system. The work lays out feasible theoretical paths toward analytically describing two-level atoms driven by ultrashort pulses.

Exact analytical results for a two-level quantum system under a Lorentzian-shaped pulse field*

Qiongtao Xie, Xiaoliang Liu

We investigate a two-level quantum system driven by a Lorentzian-shaped pulse field. An analytical solution is presented in terms of the confluent Heun functions. It is shown that for specially chosen parameter conditions, there are a number of the exact analytical solutions in an explicit form. The dependence of the final transition probabilities in the two levels on the system parameters is derived analytically and confirmed numerically.

Analytical solutions for a two-level system driven by a class of chirped pulses

Pankaj K. Jha, Yuri V. Rostovtsev

We present analytical solutions for the problem of a two-level atom driven by a class of chirped pulses. The solutions are given in terms of Heun functions. By use of the appropriate chirping parameters, an enhancement of four orders of magnitude in the population transfer is obtained.

Resonant pulse excitation leading to ionization

Jay R. Ackerhalt

Laser excitation of a two-level atom is analytically studied for arbitrary pulse shape, area, and energy. The ionization mechanism is modeled as a homogeneous width $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ of the atomic excited state. A transformation of the optical Bloch equations allows the dynamics to be completely described by a single equation for the area of the pulse at time $t$, $\ensuremath{\Phi}(t)$. Analytic solutions for the total bound population for a wide variety of pulse shapes can be found in two regions: $\ensuremath{\Phi}(t)\ensuremath{\approx}sin\ensuremath{\Phi}(t)$ and $\ensuremath{\Omega}(t)>\ensuremath{\gamma}$, where $\ensuremath{\Omega}(t)$ is the resonance Rabi frequency. The generalization of the two-level atom results to the $N$-level atom is discussed.
