Resonant pulse excitation leading to ionization

Jay R. Ackerhalt

Laser excitation of a two-level atom is analytically studied for arbitrary pulse shape, area, and energy. The ionization mechanism is modeled as a homogeneous width $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ of the atomic excited state. A transformation of the optical Bloch equations allows the dynamics to be completely described by a single equation for the area of the pulse at time $t$, $\ensuremath{\Phi}(t)$. Analytic solutions for the total bound population for a wide variety of pulse shapes can be found in two regions: $\ensuremath{\Phi}(t)\ensuremath{\approx}sin\ensuremath{\Phi}(t)$ and $\ensuremath{\Omega}(t)>\ensuremath{\gamma}$, where $\ensuremath{\Omega}(t)$ is the resonance Rabi frequency. The generalization of the two-level atom results to the $N$-level atom is discussed.

Phase Control of Medium Gain in a Double Two-Level System: From Ultrashort to Long Pulse Regime

F. A. Hashmi, M. A. Bouchène

We consider a double two-level system in which each single two-level system is driven by a strong pulse. The light shifts induced by the strong field are probed by a weak pulse that connects the two sub-system in a crossed manner connecting the ground state of one system with the excited state of the other and vice versa. We are interested in coherent control of medium gain for the weak pulse and we demonstrate the conditions on laser and atomic parameters that render this control possible. Both ultra-short and long pulse regimes are discussed

Coherent control of atomic excitation using off-resonant strong few-cycle pulses

Pankaj K. Jha, Hichem Eleuch, Yuri V. Rostovtsev

We study the dynamics of a two-level system driven by an off-resonance few-cycle pulse which has a phase jump $\ensuremath{\phi}$ at $t={t}_{0}$, in contrast to many-cycle pulses, under the nonrotating-wave approximation (NRWA). We give a closed form analytical solution for the evolution of the probability amplitude $|{C}_{a}(t)|$ for the upper level. Using the appropriate pulse parameters like the phase jump $\ensuremath{\phi}$, jump time ${t}_{0}$, pulse width $\ensuremath{\tau}$, frequency $\ensuremath{\nu}$, and Rabi frequency ${\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{0}$ the population transfer after the pulse is gone can be optimized and, for the pulse considered here, an enhancement factor of ${10}^{6}--{10}^{8}$ was obtained.

Coherent excitation of a two-level atom driven by a far-off-resonant classical field: Analytical solutions

Pankaj Kumar Jha, Yuri V. Rostovtsev

We present an analytical treatment of coherent excitation of a two-level atom driven by a far-off-resonant classical field. A class of pulse envelope is obtained for which this problem is exactly solvable. The solutions are given in terms of the Heun function, which is a generalization of the hypergeometric function. Degeneracy of the Heun to a hypergeometric equation can give all the exactly solvable pulse shapes of Gauss hypergeometric form from the generalized pulse shape obtained here. We discuss the application of the results obtained to the generation of soft x-ray and ultraviolet radiations.

We study the dynamics of a two-level system driven by an off-resonance few-cycle pulse which has a phase jump $\ensuremath{\phi}$ at t=t0t={t}_{0}t=t0, in contrast to many-cycle pulses, under the nonrotating-wave approximation (NRWA). We give a closed form analytical solution for the evolution of the probability amplitude ∣Ca(t)∣|{C}_{a}(t)|∣Ca(t)∣ for the upper level. Using the appropriate pulse parameters like the phase jump $\ensuremath{\phi}$, jump time t0{t}_{0}t0, pulse width $\ensuremath{\tau}$, frequency $\ensuremath{\nu}$, and Rabi frequency ${\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{0}$ the population transfer after the pulse is gone can be optimized and, for the pulse considered here, an enhancement factor of 106−−108{10}^{6}--{10}^{8}106−−108 was obtained.
