Hilbert spaces from path integrals

Abstract

It is shown that a Hilbert space can be constructed for a quantum system starting from a framework in which histories are fundamental. The Decoherence Functional provides the inner product on this "History Hilbert space". It is also shown that the History Hilbert space is the standard Hilbert space in the case of non-relativistic quantum mechanics.

On the Classification of Decoherence Functionals

The basic ingredients of the consistent histories approach to quantum mechanics are the space of histories and the space of decoherence functionals. In this work we extend the classification theorem for decoherence functionals proven by Isham, Linden and Schreckenberg to the case where the space of histories is the lattice of projection operators on an arbitrary separable or non-separable complex Hilbert space of dimension strictly greater than two.

Quantum mechanics

I start by briefly overviewing quantum mechanics as it is standardly formulated and by discussing the question of whether this standard formulation needs to be supplemented by an interpretation. The overview is based mainly on Von Neumann (1932, 1955) and its aim is not to give the reader a crash course in quantum mechanics, but to present those parts of the standard formalism which I use in this book. For a more complete treatment, the reader may consult the standard textbooks on quantum mechanics or, for instance, Sudbery (1986) or Redhead (1987). The standard formulation The standard formulation of quantum mechanics can be introduced in four steps. The first step is that in quantum mechanics one describesthe physics of a system by means of a Hilbert space ℋ. This Hilbert space is a complex linear vector space on which an inner product is defined. Let's adopt the convention (please consult the Glossary at the end of the book for notational conventions) that α refers to a system and that is the Hilbert space that is associated with this system. Let ∣ℋ α 〉 denote a vector in ℋ α and let 〈ψ α ∣φ α 〉 be the inner product between the vectors ∣ψ α 〉 and ∣φ α 〉.

Path summation and quantum measurements

We propose a general theoretical approach to quantum measurements based on the path (histories) summation technique. For a given dynamical variable A, the Schrödinger state of a system in a Hilbert space of arbitrary dimensionality is decomposed into a set of substates, each of which corresponds to a particular detailed history of the system. The coherence between the substates may then be destroyed by meter(s) to a degree determined by the nature and the accuracy of the measurement(s) which may be of von Neumann, finite-time or continuous type. Transformations between the histories obtained for non-commuting variables and construction of simultaneous histories for non-commuting observables are discussed. Important cases of a particle described by Feynman paths in the coordinate space and a qubit in a two dimensional Hilbert space are studied in some detail.

Symmetries of decoherence functionals

The basic ingredients of the “consistent histories” approach to quantum theory are a space 𝒰𝒫 of “history propositions” and a space 𝒟 of “decoherence functionals.” In this article we consider such history quantum theories in the case where 𝒰𝒫 is given by the set of projectors 𝒫(𝒱) on some Hilbert space 𝒱. Using an analog of Wigner’s theorem in the context of history quantum theories proven earlier, we develop the notion of a “symmetry of a decoherence functional” and prove that all such symmetries form a group which we call “the symmetry group of a decoherence functional.” We calculate for the case of standard quantum mechanics—when looked at from the perspective of the history program—some of these symmetries explicitly and relate them to some discussions that have appeared previously.

The Unifying Role of Hilbert Space in Quantum Field Theory and Information Science

Hilbert spaces provide the fundamental mathematical framework for describing quantum mechanical systems. Their structure, characterized by an inner product and completeness, allows for the representation of quantum states as vectors and physical observables as self-adjoint operators. Key quantum phenomena such as superposition and entanglement find natural expression within this formalism. Superposition, where a quantum system can exist in multiple states simultaneously, is represented by linear combinations of basis vectors in the Hilbert space. Entanglement, a non-classical correlation between quantum systems, is described by non-separable state vectors in a tensor product of Hilbert spaces. These concepts are pivotal in quantum computing, where the unit of information, the qubit, is a two-level quantum system whose state is a vector in a two-dimensional complex Hilbert space (ℂ²). Quantum gates, which perform operations on qubits, are represented by unitary operators acting on these state vectors. The power of quantum computation, particularly in algorithms like Shor's or Grover's, stems from the ability to exploit superposition and entanglement, processes intrinsically described within the Hilbert space framework. Thus, a thorough understanding of Hilbert spaces is indispensable for grasping the principles of quantum mechanics and for advancing the field of quantum information and computation [1, 7]. The transition from classical bits to quantum qubits, and from classical logic gates to quantum unitary operations, is entirely predicated on the mathematical properties endowed by Hilbert spaces.
